The chronicles word counter!

My turn!
Short Story: Silverbeard (not final title)
Genre: Contemporary fantasy
Wordcount: 1700
This WAS a finished short story. I was told yesterday by my lecturer that its a novel ... ! This, I would usually shy from, but this story's different. It NEEDS telling!

Thank you. This palce seems pretty proffesional. My last forum died and wouldn't wake up. Kinda worried about all the stuff posted there ...

Status update
Short Story: Silverbeard (not final title)
Genre: Contemporary fantasy
Wordcount: 3200 (1st draft)

This is my first "count" post.

Novel: The Goddess Project (first in as-yet-nameless series)
Genre: non-medieval fantasy
Wordcount: 20,700
Aim: 120,000 by April 6th

I'm finally going to follow my avatar's advice and try really hard to write 10,000 words a week, no matter how scrappy. No rewriting until the draft is done!! I aim to put an update here every week - if I don't, or the increase that week isn't at least 10,000 words, please feel free to send encouragement or abuse.

Blimey, just as well you've taken the hare's hat off, his brain is going to overheat....... If the muse is singing, then good luck, and good on you. (Actually, I typed 'good' but 'god' came up instead!) I think it's an admirable target, and don't worry, all your friends on the chrons will encourage you endlessly. That's another word for 'nag'......... There isn't a tortoise involved in this, is there?

Following the fight scene changes my word count has dropped even more: 168,822......

Sounds like a great idea. Go for it, man. :)

Let me be the first one the shower you with abuse ;)
What sort of punishment do we get to inflict on you if you can't help yourself and start re-writing the same paragraph over and over? (Have you had yourself checked for OCD btw?)

Just kidding, sweetpea, I think it's a brilliant idea and I will personally buy you a dozen chocolate cinnamon brezal if you manage it throughout February.
WooHoo

The hare is talking to you? You are talking to the hare? (I'm not sure which troubles me most!)

Seriously - good luck with the wordcount. We'll be tuning in every week to see if you can manage it. Brickbats will fly if you don't. (That's always puzzled me. If the bats are made out of bricks - how do they get airborne?)

Thanks for the encouragement everyone. It only makes me more determined to achieve my target - or to lie about doing so.

Judge, there's a bat made of the moon around here somewhere - how does it land?

I think a brickbat is an implement for hitting bricks with, just as a cricket bat is for wiping out annoying chirping insects. As it has to be very heavy and solid, if it fails to make contact you're forced to let go of it or be pulled over by it, and if the former, it shows a tendency to obey Newton's laws of motion.

So a moon bat would have to be very long indeed.

I couldn't type ten thousand words in a week unless I did nothing else, and that includes logging on here.

Unfinished - Story no 4 for 2009

Short story, "The Call Comes Down"
Hardboiled crime (a guilty pleasure!)
Current word count: 1817

First draft - check, first readthrough - check. Needs a redraft to get a consistent voice throughout and sort out some attribution errors that jar a little. Other than that I'm really happy with how it turned out. I think I've managed to balance the tone quite well without laying it on too heavily, and there were a couple of subtle references I couldn't resist throwing in. All in all, a really fun bit of writing.

Hopefully have it done by midweek, ready for reader testing and submission by the weekend.

I can't help it! Honest!

Anyway, the longest was only 3500 so the total word count for this year is a scant (hunts for calculator)...8300 (ish).

OK, so that seems like a lot more now I've added it up, but still, they all feel super short!

Hopefully in a couple of months I'll have the gumption to crack on with the novel. Every time I've tried to continue it so far, I've come up short against the myriad of plot possibilities that all sound interesting in my mind.

Also, I think I'll join you in the whisky before I slope off to bed. Mind you, it's a 12 yo Aberlour so I think a touch of water will be enough for dilution's sake.

Malessar's Curse
Grand epic of tragedian scale
43000 words and counting

back on the trail after diverting through several short stories.

After one week, the count is now 29,300. Not great, not a disaster. I have a full list of excuses for those who want it ...

8,600 words isn't so shabby....... I'd say it was pretty good, and fancy being honest enuff to own up to it!! Of course, if you add in the words you've put up on the chrons during that week, the count would be.......?
