The chronicles word counter!

Thanks, Suave. I hadn't realized it, but when you put it that way, it really is like 15 pages. I added another eight today, after a inspiring dream, but I am not exactly finished. I wonder if I can beat my record. I think all my progress goes to the fact that it is a fairly light hearted story. Not as many twists and turns as my average work.

Title: A Preaching and Teaching Commentary on Acts (Too long but descriptive.)
Genre: Biblical commentary
Word Count: 73,500
Chapters: 21 completed (12 chapters of Acts)
Status:Continuing to work. Finished the commentary for the first verses of chapter 13, (chapter 22) and am now working on the Sermon outline and the discussion questions.

Unfinished
Novel : Freak Like Me (working title)
Genre : currently unclassified, it is very much between several genres.
Word Count : 38,317
Status: Added almost 15,000 words today, and finally found a good plot twist. I was getting worried that this story would be pointless.

Novel: Untitled (Hmm, I could just call it that...)
Genre: Sci-fi/humour (well, not sure about humour, it might just quip occasionally)
Word count: 1,121
Chapters: 1 (Dan Brown I ain't, he'd be up to chapter seven by now!)
Status: Chugging along happily. It's still early days yet!

Novel: Mars Divided (working title)
Genre: Sci-fi/humour (still not sure about humour, quips ahoy!)
Word count: 3,081
Chapters: 1 (But the chapter now has a divide thingy)
Status: Still chugging. If I build up any momentum I seem to suddenly stop in my tracks to research something!

Still not sure what goal I want to set myself with the word count. I'd be happier if I'd written more by this point but I'm happy with what I've got so far. I've spent a lot of today on it but that included quite a bit of research and me getting distracted by trying to draw a space ship so I could describe it (and I'm crap at drawing so I didn't really get anywhere!).

Any way, this post has distracted me long enough. Time to get back to it and hopefully smash through the small and temporary block I seem to be at!

at!

I get ditracted by building avatars of my characters on teh Gaia Tek Tek avatar builder, so I can describe them better too!

I don't play Gaia, but I will say, there avatar thing has a lot of options. To many, much to many.

...and me getting distracted by trying to draw a space ship so I could describe it....

Sadly, you are not alone.

There are whole fleets of spacecrafts floating around, all of which have one, common purpose: to prevent authors getting on with writing their books.

(And then there are all the planets, the alien species, the technologies, the gizmos.... It's a wonder anything gets written at all.)

Oh, and WiP1 is now down below 140,000 words, 62000+ less than at the peak of its bloatedness. (But there are a handful of new scenes to write.)

Been a slow going this week but I had a rather busy week in some regards. Hopefully I'll pick of speed this coming week.

I've now written one of those scenes: over 1000 words. I hope the others are shorter (and/or that I can find cuts elsewhere).

ok, now i've finished all of my current short stories. the cupboard is empty.
back to the epics....

Malessar's Curse
First half of a planned 2-part tragic fantasy
@ 61000 words
been a bit barren recently, waiting for it to enthuse me once more.

The Empire Dance
Resurrected military-style SF, donkeys years old
@3500 words (plus 7000 from an unspecified part of the plot)
just found the old files on backup discs; having a bit of fun with it and trying a new, very episodic approach.

Kinsmeet: Reever's Mark
epic fantasy-stodge
20000ish words
hasn't moved a muscle in 18 months or so.

Ursa, do you really need new scenes and if you do, why cannot you alter the story so that the newer ones replaces the older ones, but basically get to same/altered ending?

ctg: I think I should be comfortably within my target (less than 145000 words - it now has 141,000 without the remaining new scenes).

The new scenes are there because they need to be. I have removed three POVs and the bulk of two more**; oh, and a total of 60000+ words. Adding four or five scenes - I'm hoping the one I added on Saturday is the longest by far - is a small price to pay for these major reductions.

MGIR: WiP1 is the first book of four. WiP2 and WiP3 are written - they used to be even longer than WiP1, even at its largest - but still need to be edited to match the new style and structure of WiP1; I have about 20,000 words of WiP4 (that should be WniP4: work not in progress ;)).

** - These last two were in the frame story, which did not need to be anywhere as big as it had become.

Ursa why you wrote the WiP2 and WiP3 when you haven't got the first one published. Why I'm asking is because I thought last year to do the same, but now after I finish this, I might start with completely new thing and aim for the general market.

The reason why I wouldn't write second and third books for the trilogy is because JJ said when I asked, "you wouldn't want to waste time and money doing those things."

I wrote them because I enjoyed doing so. And without wanting to completely hijack the thread, WiP2 was the first big thing I wrote. Okay, I only got about 50-60,000 words into it before I gave up (this was 18 or so years ago; but I had, by then, realised I needed an earlier book to set things up; that set-up became the current WiP1. As it happens, WiP2 is very different from its earlier incarnation.

As for WiP3.... WiP2 (the current, third version) now shares only one character with WiP1; however, in its second version, it shared the stage with the aftermath of WiP1, including all the extant characters from that book. As you might imagine, it became unwieldy, so I split off that aftermath, which became WiP3. (And what exists of WiP4 was cut from the end of WiP3, the bit where it merged back with the thread of WiP2.

With me so far...? Only joking.

I have no idea whether any of them will be published. I entered an earlier version of WiP1 (when it was ~190000 words long) in the Writers' and Artists' Yearbook competition (the Centenary one) and it was shortlisted (if you can call a list with 100 entries short). I offered a slightly updated version to an agent; they weren't interested, but kindly suggested some things (especially POV "cleanliness") that needed fixing. Which is what I've been doing, free time permitting, in the year or two since. (In between spamming this place with puns :), which are mostly absent from the books.)

Anyway, that's enough thread hijacking....
