Short story for the Manchester Fiction Prize competition weighed in at 4909 words when I finally submitted it. Deadline isn't until the 7th of August, but I had tinkered with it enough and I got sufficient good feedback to draw a line under it.

We'll see how it goes. I sincerely doubt it'll win anything, but you can always hope. Plus I reckon it's good enough to submit elsewhere should nothing happen, which is nice as a backup.

The rest of my week has been spent hammering out 8,100 words of a bit of contemporary fiction (with supernatural elements). It's a lot of fun, trying to keep things fast-paced, but still provide backstory for the main character. Also, it's entirely in first person, which is a new thing for me. The epic fantasy is kind of on hold at the moment, as I want to try and finish this and a couple of smaller pieces that are more likely to reach a publishable state.

Well, this is my starting point. My work schedule is pretty random so some days and weeks I'll have a lot more time than others. On top of that, I'm doing an A-Level (which I'm beginning to wish I hadn't started) and on top of that (on top of that...we're getting quite high now) I've only been writing for a couple of days, I have no idea how much I can realistically churn out in a day or a week. At the moment I'll use this as a reference to look back on and tell people at a later point when they can send me abusive messages (and occasionally, messages telling me to write more ).

That's pretty amazing. It's about 8300 words per day. The way I write that would be about 14-15 pages.

Status: It's going a bit slower than my last two books. I chalk that up to it being science fiction, whereas all 8 of my previous novels were fantasy.
