Fed Up Yet???

Since reading ASoIaF the first time round, the wait for ADWD has only made me grow even more obsessed with everything westerosi. If the whole series had been written when I picked the series up back in January, I would have read the books -- and yes, loved them to bits -- but that might not have spurred me into searching the net for websites, forums and blogs, greedily devouring any news on the next possible release date, and discovering all the intelligent (and otherwise) theories that I'd never have thought of myself. All the while, Brienne is still dangling from that rope, the cords tightening at her neck, Tyrion is on his way across the Narrow Sea, the dragons are growing, and Ramsay Bolton could be flaying a little bit more of Theon as I write these words, with no way of knowing what fate awaits them all until GRRM says so.

So, in a slightly masochistic way, I'm quite thankful for the long wait, as it has compelled me to explore the world of ASoIaF in greater depth, and made me think a lot more about the characters and the story. Perhaps my love will fade if I have to endure years before I read another ASoIaF book (after all, I didn't have to suffer the last wait between ASoS and Feast)... but I doubt it.

Good grief. ADWD will be out in 2008 (touch wood) and the wait for the remaining books should be 2-3 years apiece barring another 5-year-gap problem (which seems unlikely). No, it's not a Steven Erikson-style release schedule (he'll be done by the end of 2010) but it's still not too bad, all things considered.

Not too sure about that. I check his livejournal page from time to time and all he's talking about is football and pizza. When was the last update on Dance? :(

A little unfair in your assessment Zee. The last update in his Not A Blog was on September 1st. He skipped Worldcon to work on the book. That's not to mention that in the last 3-4 months, we've had a revised Dany preview chapter go up on his website and a reveal of the prologue POV and the introduction of a new character (which he did at a con). So, not too bad Give the guy a break for liking other things like a good slice of pizza or NFL football. ADWD will likely be out in the Spring.

Hence the qualifier "likely". But, GRRM's publishers may have better luck holding him to that than any of us would.

I saw somewhere that Amazon had it pre-listed for release in April I think. Although I checked and could not find it.

Yes on the Amazon UK site, but Amazon is notorious for just making up release dates. Although it is fun to look at and hope that "April 2008" is true.

Amazon.co.uk: A Dance with Dragons Book 5: A Song of Ice and Fire: Books: George R.R. Martin

Thank god Martin has you to defend him against fans unfairly wondering when he is going to finish his book. Comments like these are totally uncalled for! It's pretty absurd the pressures these people put on him. They ought to give him a break.

No worries, though. I'm sure all the fairweather friends will soon return, only to scurry away while the true, loyal fans stand by through thick and thin.

Keep fighting the good fight, TK.

Well, Zee, I think it was Wert who indicated in another thread that the last time Amazon was bang on for AFFC. No doubt, this information would come from the publishers.

Oh, this cross I bear, it's...so...heavy...I too wonder, why, why, why, the torture, the anguish, the patience one must have...even when it's cloudy outside. I think if you asked the man himself why is he not satisfying the needs of fans, he would give a pretty straight answer. That would be worth more than this cross I bear. Besides, isn't the Swiss who say something about quality not being rushed. ;)

P.S. Thanks for the compliments about being true and loyal.

I think the Dutch also say it, about Grolsch lager! According to the tv ads -- "You can't rush these things" (viz. beer... and GRRM!)

It took around 2 years after Amazon's initial posting of a release date for AFfC.

They should have owed me interest on the money I used to preorder it.

So I didn't read the latest blog entry carefully enough. There's a theory going around that he's finished Dance with Dragons and left a cryptic message to that effect. He says:

"There are a few things that are better. Finishing a book, winning a Hugo, kissing a hot babe, a new book by one of my favorite writers, a great pizza pie"

Then at the end of the post he says:

"A pizza, a Hugo, and a few hundred kisses would make this a perfect day."

Notice he leaves out the parts about finishing a book, and the new book by a favorite author.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

the reason he doesn't do more then skim over the topic of ADWD, he's said in the past, is that he was sick of people always bugging him about it and wasting his time with those quarries when he could put that wasted work time towards actually writing it. he's also said when he's done he'll post basicly right away that he's finished writing

I'm afraid I got fed up before the end of his second book of the series! I'm not exactly sure why but there didn't seem to be much to hold my interest. I know I didn't like many of the female characters, very shallow and self centered I thought.
I've kept the first two books, so maybe I might try again at some other stage.

Rosemary, that's fine. If we all liked the same things, we'd go stir crazy.

Unfortunately, I think Martin is losing his fire for ASoIaF. Book 4 was a very long time coming and was nowhere near the quality level of the first amazing 3 books.

I'd be delighted to be proven wrong on this in the future, but AFfC was a lame effort by an excellent author.

I completely disagree. I read all the books back to back and I was completely engrossed in book 4 as much as the other books. I missed some of the characters, but I liked how he built stories around the other characters that were present. All in all I thought it was a great effort.
