First off, I agree with the assessment of Nakor. In my opinion he's probably the best character Ray has developed yet, followed a close second by Jimmy.
As far as killing off characters, I think it's only natural that some are going to die during the wars that are fought and it would be pretty unbelievable if all of the major character survived unscathed. We also have to remember that REF is telling these tales chronologically, over a period of at least a hundred years. It would be unnatural (and therefore less believable) if all of the human characters lived on and on.
Tho some like Pug, Nakor and Macros are timeless due to their magickal abilities, I like the fact that the stories span a long period of time, and it's only natural that people grow up, age and eventually die. Even when I was crying over the loss of Jimmy, I had to remember that he was an old man, and even tho he was killed defending his city, he lived to be a pretty good age.
When you talk about authors who kill off characters, George R R Martin is one of the worst. I started reading the Song of Ice and Fire series and was thoroughly enjoying it until he managed to kill off all but one of the major characters I'd grown to know and love, except for one, within the first three books. Now that's 'overkill', and I was so disgusted that I stopped buying the series.
