But Imp...Tywin did not want Eddard murdered, and was not even there when it happened. Later he sent Tyrion to Kings landing to make sure stuff like that did not happen. All your other points are valid but Tywin had nothing to do with Eddard's death, to suggest otherwise is just wrong.

Edit: And he didn't want Ser Barristan booted out either. He said later it was a big mistake, and would have stopped it if he was there.
My respnse to that is, it's easy to express dismay after the fact, but he could have taken action to ensure that Eddard didn't meet the exact faate that he did. I agree about the Selmy thing.

Clearly Tywin was the mastermind behind the red wedding.

No doubt Tywin masterminded the idea. I maybe should of made of it clearer that I was still talking about the whole 'sewing Grey Wind's head to Robb' deal. Unless I'm missing something, that talk between Tyrion and Tywin makes no mention or allusions to that point.

Interesting discussion going on here though over Tywin...all I have to say is that I believed he was an honourable man before the Red Wedding, which I took for exposing his rage rather than tactical acumen. Tywin is essentially the one who put Casterly Rock back on the map and must have seen that his family was unfit to carry on his legacy (esp. with Jaime committed to the Kingsguard). Add Robb outmaneouvering Tywin time after time and we see Tywin resorting to an act that the mad Aerys might have been accused of. Tywin was a pretender to honour (Re: Ned) as he was to the throne under Aerys. He fully deserved to die on the ol' crapper if you ask me.

I still think the head-sewing was Walder's idea though...

Yes, I don't think there was ever any question that Tywin orchestrated the Red Wedding. The question was specifically about who's idea it was to sew Grey Wind's head onto Robb's body. No One (as in, the user, not literally no one) insinuated that it was Walder, while it strikes me as something that a crowd of soldiers might decide to do. We were wondering if it was ever specifically addressed.

edit: I swear No One's post was not there 5 minutes before I posted this. And by "swear" I mean that I almost certainly just overlooked it. Sorry :)

IMO sewing greywind's head onto Robbs body had Frey written all over it, and that Frey was most likely Walder, who is a mean-spirited, vindictive peiece of scum that isn't fit to breaht the same air as even the like of a Sandor CLegane. Tywin certainly wouldn't bother with such detail. He would have stood to gain nothing by ordering it, whereas Walder would have at least gained satisfaction and revenge.

Oh. I misunderstood the question. I don't think Tywin did the whole "sewing Grey Wind onto Robb Stark". Tywin doesn't seem that petty. Whoops, sorry ^_^

Chairface - yeah maybe a crowd of unsupervised soldiers would do something like that, but not without risking insult to insult and the wrath of their Lord. It's safer for a soldier to follow his orders with a 'no frills' policy methinks.

And Robin - thanks for the effort. I agree that I don't think it was Tywin's brainchild and as Imp says the whole thing had 'Frey' written all over it.

Tywin would have been my second choice of vote though, for the Red Wedding and his treatment of Tyrion's perfectly innocent ex-wife.

Hey, No One and Imp - So I just finished The Mystery Knight, and if you haven't read it yet, I think you would really enjoy how Walder is portrayed. I would guess that maybe GRRM doesn't like him either...

I've been meaning to look up GRRM's earlier stories - particularly those which involved the ASOIAF setting. It would've been interesting to have known Walder before A Storm of Swords. Will try to get my hands on a copy forthwith.

Thanks Chairface.

I'm done with The Hedge Knight and will be starting on the second one soon. Although I look forward to reading about the younger version of Lord Frey, what I REALLY want to see is his nickname become reality.
