I've only read the first book so far, but I had to vote Catelyn Stark. To me there's not much worse than someone who puts themself on a pedestal over everyone else even though they are probably one of the most hateful/spiteful players in the game. Plus the way she treats Jon just disgusts me on a very deep level.

I'm torn between Cersei and Joff. I really really hated Jamie up until he saved Brienne, actually, probably up until he lost his arm, the saving of Brienne made me like him more.

Joffrey is horrible. He was horrible from the start, poor Arya. Yet, he's still a child.

Cersei, on the other hand, is just a vile woman. She has no redeeming features whatsoever. So, I'll go with Cersei.

Walder doing the stuff to Robb was bad, but he hasn't done as much vile stuff as Cersei. Yes, Clegane is horrible, but he doesn't pretend different.

Stannis is just a religious nutjob. Melisandre is worse.

I hated Theon when I thought he'd killed Bran and Rickon, but the fact he got his comeuppance meant I stopped hating him so much.

I have no opinion on Jorah or Tywin. I also agree Littlefinger deservs to be up there, he is a scheming, horrible man.

Cersei is still worse.

Tie between Cersei and Joffrey. Damn I can't stand either of them, at least Cersei gets her on POV in the 4th book and we get a bit more insight into her but Joffrey is just terrible.

Love to see Cersei getting paid out, was cheering during her exchange with Kevan Lannister about becoming the hand in the 4th book.

Don't know why Tywin or Jorah are on this list.

Lysa Arryn for the brief amount she appeared in the books gave me the ***** as well.

Why is Jorah up there? Is it because he lusts after a young girl?

Yeah! Whats the go? I LIKE Jorah. If you think of things in the "olden" terms, liking a 13/14 year old isnt such a big deal. As far as im concerned hes been a loyal knight to Dany. (So what if he did something with slaves, it was the fashion. Ned is too uptight.)

Id have Jorah by my side any day of the week. (Cept Sunday. I like to sleep in):D

Jorah is there because he sells out Dany for his own advancement or gain. Because he only ever cared about himself, thus his actions with Dany. Because he knowingly committed a serious crime and instead of facing his liege lord's justice, the king's justice, he fled. Because he's a coward. He was never loyal to Dany.

He is a good fighter but is the true embodiment of the ragged, fallen and exiled knight in the series.

After much consideration (...there are so many to choose from) - I chose Walder Frey.... Hopefully we get to see Walder "rewarded" for his deeds!

Otherwise, Joffrey would have been my first choice - as he seemed to possess a "talent" for overwhelming cruelty....Imagine if he were still alive, of age and actually ruled in his own right?!

I really thought Jorah became loyal to Dany through the course of the series, but I feel I might be missing something...

I think that Jorah fell in love with her, and that created mixed feelings for him, but I don't think that she ever had his complete loyalty. I agree that he did consider what was best for her at times, rather than what was bestg for him and his ulterior motives.

Even though I only got about halfway or so of A Game of Thrones-I absolutely refused to read on anymore past the part where Princess Sasha's dire wolf was sentenced to death-I voted Jaime Lannister for what he did to Bran. (Assuming I'm thinking of the correct character, of course....)

If you found that went where you didn't want it to go, not reading on was almost certainly a wise move, given some of the later events in the series.

Yes, that was Jaime.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I thought. I tend to get very involved with my books, and despite the fact that Martin is one of the most praised authors on this site for his stories, I also heard that he's.....pretty sadistic to his characters as well. I might get back to GoT, though, because I went through all the trouble of finding his books and not reading them would be a shame.

Hi Karn. I would find it quite amusing that the execution of Sansa's wolf was enough to put you off reading the rest, except that it is a painfully sad scene. As Ursa Major pointed out though, that's the least of the travesties committed by various characters. One question though: what are you doing reading these threads?! If you had any intention of ever picking these incredible books up again why ruin the surprise? Even so, I would seriously encourage you to read these - there's a lot of good fantasy authors out there and while I haven't familiarized myself with many of them, I feel sure that Martin has created something truly exceptional. And some good things will happen by the end. Surely.

Anyways, I just cast my vote for old Walder. As much as Joffrey needed to die a thousand deaths, it just can't be anyone else for reasons previously cited by Imp - re: Greywind/Robb.

And TK - if my theory holds true, then you might have to one day add a certain Arya Stark to this list. You never know...

Karn, (why sympathy for the devil, then?:)) if you don't like harsher parts like the events around Sansa's wolf, even in the gestalt of a story, do not read any more of this series.

A lot of sensitivity might be fairly limiting as far as reading literature or history, or paying attention to nature, people, politics, or art, but one size does not fit all. There are gentler reads out there, to be sure. Peace.

Arya is already evil.

She murdered a stableboy in KL. She ordered the deaths of Weese and Chiswyck. She conspired to murder the Brave Companions. She murdered one of Bolton's guards. She killed the squire when Polliver and the Tickler attacked Sandor. She stabbed the Tickler in the back and repeatedly stabbed him until he was dead. She murdered Dareon.

I'm not saying that those men did not deserve to die. And in the cases of the stableboy, the squire and the Tickler, it could be argued that her life was in imminent danger... and that she was defending herself.

But what had Chiswyck and Dareon done to her? They were liars and cheats without any honor, but they'd done nothing to her. Arya is not an appointed judge nor a licensed executioner. And she did not kill or order people killed out of a sense of justice (well, maybe in Chiswyck's case). She murders or has people murdered to satisfy her lust for vengeance. You don't agree? What is the last thing Arya does before sleeping? Ah, yes, she recites a list of names of people who she wants dead.

And what is Arya doing now? Oh, yeah... she is in training to become an assassin. She does this to further her skills so that she can personally kill everyone on her list.

Arya is evil.

Yeah, but this poll isn't about most evil major character. It's about most hated. Very few, if any, readers hate Arya. Unless she starts murdering her own family members and a few kittens for good measure, her status as a loved character is secure.

Also, I looked at the list and decided that I hated Joffrey the most. Then I went back and looked and found that I originally voted for Walder Frey. Interesting (to me).

I think Arya is more unstable then evil. She saw her father beheaded (Or close enough) and then was dragged across the river lands having to fight for everything she got. Everytime she got close to returning home someone took it away from her. All of her friends abandoned her. She saw more horrors then anyone should, and she's only young. In such a situation where her mind is still growing its no wonder she thinks she has to kill people to survive. She's mentally unstable to be sure, but I don't think she's evil.

And Dareon was a deserter, a crime punishable by death.

Punishable by whom? The Lord of Winterfell and Warden of the North could do it. But a little girl in Braavos? No.

I'm being more agent provocateur than hard line anti-Arya.

Do we think that Joffrey is evil? Yes. Has he personally killed as many people as Arya? I don't know that he ever killed anybody. Did he order the murders of as many people as Arya? We don't know... mayhaps more, mayhaps less. Yet Joffrey leads this poll and Arya is not even on it.

Is it just because we like Arya that we excuse her actions?

Sympathy for the Devil because I feel the Rolling Stones have never put out a better song-except, perhaps, As Tears Go By.

And I may return to AsoIaF one day, I was just reading it at a very emotional time in my life and felt that I was not equipped to handle the injustice of some sections of A Game of Thrones.
