MY PERSONAL VIEW OF THE LYANNA+RHAEGAR=JON*NOTE*TIMELINE IS DEBATIBLE.THIS IS A SERIES OF EVENTS THAT LEAD TO JON'S BIRTH.
#1-LYANNA AND ROBERT ARE PROMISED TO ONE ANOTHER.ROBERT FALLS IN LOVE WITH THE "IDEA" OF LYANNA RATHER THAN LYANNA HERSELF.
#2-LYANNA ACCOMPANIES HER FATHER AND TWO BROTHERS TO THE TOURNEY AT HARRENHALL (FULL ACCOUNT OF THIS TOURNEY AS TOLD TO BRAN BY MEERA ON PGS 337-343 ASOS).BRIEFLY THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS.LYANNA DEFENDS A CRANNOGMAN THAT IS BEING PICKED ON BY 3 SQUIRES.SHE THEN INTRODUCES THIS CRANNOGMAN TO HER TWO BROTHERS.NED AND BRANDON OFFER THE CANNOGMAN SOME ARMOUR TO DEFEND HIS HONOUR AGAINST THE 3 SQUIRES IN THE TOURNEY.HE REFUSES AS HE HAS NO SKILL AT FIGHTING. HE THEN PRAYS TO THE GREENMEN FOR MAGICAL INTERVENTION.THE NEXT DAY A MYSTERY KNIGHT APPEARS AT THE TOURNEY,THAT IS SMALL IN STRUCTURE AND IN MISMATCHED ARMOUR.THIS MYSTERY KNIGHT CHALLANGES THE KNIGHTS TO WHOM THE 3 SQUIRES BELONG TO AND DEFEATS THEM.MYSTERY KNIGHT THEN DISAPPEARS.AERYS SENDS HIS SON RHAEGAR TO KILL THE MYSTERY KNIGHT(WHICH I BELIEVE IS LYANNA SINCE NED RECALLS THAT LYANNA IS CAPABLE WITH A SWORD WHEN HE DEBATING ALLOWING ARYA TO KEEP NEEDLE).RHAEGAR RETURNS TO AERYS WITH ONLY THE MYSTERY KNIGHTS ARMOUR.RHAEGAR THEN GOES ON TO WIN THE TOURNEY AND CROWN LYANNA QUEEN OF LOVE AND BEAUTY.
#3-LYANNA AND RHAEGAR FALL IN LOVE WHEN RHAEGAR FINDS OUT THAT SHE IS THE MYSTER KNIGHT(OF THE LAUGHING TREE).
#4-LYANNA RUNS OFF WITH RHAEGAR AND MAKE....JON.THEY NOW HAVE GONE PAST THE POINT OF NO RETURN.IT WOULD BE CONSIDERED VERY DISHONORABLE TO RETURN TO ROBERT AT THIS POINT NOT TO MENTION ELIA.
#5-BRANDON STARK AND FATHER HEAD TO KINGS LANDING TO DRAG THEIR WAYWARD DAUGHTER/SISTER HOME.ONLY TO BE INTERCEPTED BY MADD KING AERYS WHO HAS THEM EXECUTED FOR TREASON(AERYS WOULD BE MORE THAN A LITTLE CONCERNED AS TO WHAT THE STARKS WOULD HAVE PLANNED FO RHAEGAR WHO DISHONORED THEIR DAUGHTER).
#6-ROBERT BARATHEON LEARNS OF LYANNA AND RHAEGAR AND ASSUMES THAT HIS "SO CALLED" BELOVED WOULD NEVER RUN OFF ON HIM,SO NATURALLY DRAWS THE CONCLUSION THAT SHE WAS STOLEN AND RAPED.
#7-HOUSES THAT ARE ALREADY STRESSED ABOUT A LUNATIC KING REACH THEIR BREAKING POINTS AND WAR ERRUPTS.
#8-RHAEGAR,AFRAID THAT HE IS ABOUT TO LOOSE LYANNA SECURES HER IN THE MOUNTAINS OF DOURNE WITH A NUMBER OF KINGS GUARD.HE THEN RETURNS TO DEAL WITH ROBERT ,THE MAN WHO WOULD TAKE LYANNA FROM HIM AND POSSABLY DESTROY THEIR UNBORN CHILD.
#9-NED OVIOUSLLY JOINS THE WAR TO BE RID OF KING AERYS .TARGARYENS KILLED HIS BROTHER AND FATHER AS WELL AS DISHONERED HIS SISTER.
#10-NED DEFEATS THE KINGSGUARD HIDING LYANNA.ONLY TO DISCOVER HER DYING GIVING BIRTH TO JON.
#11-LYANNA MAKES NED SWEAR TO PROTECT JON FROM ROBERT WHO WOULD MOST LIKELY MURDER HIM.ETC.ETC.ETC.

I AM A LITTLE LONG WINDED:eek:

Wow! Very nice. I totally missed the bit where Lyanna was the mystery knight. Man I'm blind *shakes head* It all makes so much more sense now.

Thanks for that. That was really good.

BTW caps are hard to read.

agrees! actually thats the first time i've heard about the mysterious knight thing... I must be REALLY blind...

and also have to agree that the caps were rather difficult to read...

That is a very interesting theory. I quite liked reading about the mystery knight, but I never connected him with Lyanna.

All caps are not good...makes it look like you are shouting.

First off, I like it. Good "thinking outside the box" trying to see what's really going on.
A couple of things though.
I had thought the mystery knight was the crannogman himself, who has to be Howland Reed. Maybe the mystery knight was Lyanna, but the crannogman was definitely Howland.
As far as your timeline goes, its what I had put together also, with 2 exceptions. I think Lyanna and Rhaeger had met, and fallen in love long before the tournament, hence he crowns her queen of beauty. There's also a line somewhere in Game of Thrones in a Ned chapter about Lyanna saying Robert was a great guy but would never change (the sleeping around), more indication that she had chosen Rhaeger over Robert. Also, Daenerys has a line in Clash of Kings, something about Rhaeger fighting for the woman he loved, then falling at the Trident.
The other thing: Given all that we know about the open decadence of the Dornish court, I'm pretty sure Elia not only knew about Rhaeger's love affair, but would have encouraged it. (Oberyn told Tyrion that Ellaria wanted Cersei.) Maybe Lyanna liked it, refused to go back and marry Robert, and that's why Brandon and Rickard were done in. They didn't "run into Aery's," they were demanding Rhaeger return Lyanna. Even if she was happy and in love, her Lord father would've never understood it. She was meant to be the Lady of a great house, not a concubine. "No one makes demands on the Dragon!" everyone is killed, the war breaks out.
Anyway, yeah, good post, Lyanna as mystery knight, maybe.

Howland Reed... now there is a man I would like to learn more about. From all that I gather from his kids I can picture him as far more than meets the eye. I am very certain the Reeds will have a lot to do in future books.

Absolutely, I can't wait for the entrances of Howland Reed and Doran Martell.

Now there is a thought that is always in the back of my head but never the front... the Martell's. You are right on that one. Dorne is gonna come into this big time.

Hello everyone, hello hodor,
I'm new. May I ask a question?

Is this coversation about 'the mystery knight' and the 'crannogman' about a single GRRM book or a series?

It is a theory about something within a series by GRRM. You see all this thread has to do with the A Song of Ice and Fire series and it is unfinished. We have several theories developing about certain characters in this series. This is one of those theories.

Right,"A Song of Ice and Fire" series. I'll check it out.

Thanks.

That was pretty interesting speculation - what I especially like is the perception of the tragic element involved in the death of Brandon, and the pride of the Targs. Very interesting. :)

I had totally forgotten about that Lyanna bit - but as soon as I read your post, I remembered. That does give a new angle to the Rhaegar-Lyanna-Robert triangle.

The other line is in the first Dany chapter in A Game of Thrones: 'Her brother Rhaegar battling the Usurper in the bloody waters of the Trident and dying for the woman he loved.' It might be reiterated in ACoK, though, am not sure.

I thought the Mystery Knight was Howland Reed, too, but in some ways the Lyanna thing makes more sense. Will have to reread that part. Am hanging out for Howland to make an appearance other than in flashback. He's the man with all the answers, it would seem.

On the issue of Doran Martell - at the end of A Storm of Swords, was it definite that Tyrion was headed to the Free Cities, as everyone seems to think? I was trying to think of how the Martells could be brought into the series, and wondered if maybe Tyrion would be game to head south and use Oberyn's death at the hands of Cersei as means for an alliance with the Martells. Plus Myrcella's already there, and he seemed to have an okay relationship with her. Although personally, I hope he goes north to help the Watch. If he took the black, he would be free from prosecution over Joffrey's death. Plus his good friend Jon Snow is Lord Commander now...

I am more inclined to believe that Howland was the knight. I seem to remember Ned talking about how Howland was with him when they faced Arthur Dayne. I remember too many "non obvious" hints in regards to Howland steadily throughout the entire series thus far; this leads me to believe he was an important figure in the past and will be so in the future. I so far can not come up with too many theories on the Reeds though. Their castle moves and nobody can find it because of the swamps... the Children went into hiding... the Children were small and as I recall the Crannogmen are thus so as well.
