Who's death? (SUPER MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGH AFFC)

:O Nooo not the Ironborn I love them guys :p They're sick. Played as a Greyjoy/Harlaw in a forum rp time ago was le fun.

*Wonders what he is in the forum, probably some big blunt northman*

gotta say i could happily see the entirity of the Iron Islands obliterated from the story entirely. Theirs is a loathsome people, not worthy of love/hate reading - but of pure revulsion. Cold, brutal, pirates. bored and disinterested, moving on. they joined the story too late in the piece, and though i knew the type of person Theon was, he became a two-bit villiain, when i had actually rather liked him.

I agree. I think the knife-throwing game is one of the stupidest things in Westeros.

maybe theon will change after being kept prisoner i hope anyway i didnt mind him until the betrayl

You know we all talk about GRRM's realism, but there are a lot of people that probably should be dead and have survived somehow. Like Tyrion, Arya, and Sandor, just to mention the ones alive without magical intervention.

Ned's death was crazy, I was all ready for him to head to the wall and tell Jon about his parentage. But the Red Wedding was the most shocking for me. Even though since Grey Wind was left behind I should have seen something bad happening.

I was just posting on the Tyrion-Sansa thread. I typed in the quote from Littlefinger to Sansa... Life is not a song, sweetling. You may learn that one day to your sorrow. (As an aside, that is a truly excellent line. It fit perfectly in language, setting, and wisdom. Great writing.) Anyway, I was picturing Baelish looking so solemnly at Sansa while uttering those words when I was struck by the thought that he already knew which side he'd take when swords were drawn... he may not have known the exact manner or method, but he knew he'd turn Eddard over to the the Lannisters. I'd always thought he was still weighing his options up until Eddard refused Renly's offer. No, Baelish knew about the incest and he wanted the Lannisters in power during the civil war. Eddard was finished the moment he stepped inside the Red Keep. Littlefinger would have done for him one way or another. He might have been hoping that Renly would have joined Eddard and thus snared also.

Yes, but I don't think Littlefinger wanted Eddard to die. I don't think Littlefinger is entirely heartless, though I think I may be in the minority here.

He wanted Eddard to die. Brandon tried to kill Petyr and Eddard got his girl while he was lying wounded. Eddard reminded him of all this in the first thirty seconds after they met in KL. And Petyr had already lied to Catelyn regarding the knife before Eddard even arrived in KL.

Not entirely heartless? Littlefinger had Dontos murdered in front of Sansa. He sold Jeyne Poole to Roose Bolton. He sold Eddard to Cersei. He sold Stannis to Tywin and Mace. He shoved his wife off a mountain. He knew Robert was going to be murdered at any moment. He is currently using Robert Arryn as a pawn, knowing full well that at this pace the boy will not survive another two years. Not entirely heartless? No, Littlefinger makes the Queen of Thorns look like a sensitivity trainer.

what about just before aemon dies in AFFC and says
" I should not have left the wall lord snow could not have known but i should have seen it Fire comsumes but cold preserves the wall"

Lady dying was unexpected but not a total kick to the gut. The story was still "young", we hadn't seen lady all that much, and it was already becoming clear that the Lannisters were a sadistic bunch. Eddard dying WAS a shocker, but not totally unexpected, given what we knew of The Boy King Who Must Not Be Named.

I'll never forget the moment that The Red Wedding unfolded. I was walking home , had gotten to the house, and was walking up the stairs to the second floor when the killing started. I literally had to sit down on the couch when I reached the next floor. I felt disoriented, almost as if I was dreaming. No other events in any other work of fiction has had such a strong effect on me. I suppose part of the reason is because Robb and his entourage were such a major part of the story. In one fell swoop GRRM killed off one POV character and one of the 5 "Kings"- the one that I'd say the vast majority of readers wanted to win the throne. Beyond all that it was also the pure evilness and treachery, the idea of breaking one of the most basic rules of their civilization. If you go back and reread the books you'll find that there are many "clues" that in retrospect are totally obvious, (Sandor saying to Arya- "maybe you'll get to see your Uncle's bloody wedding" (paraphrase) for example, but to this day it's still hard to believe that The Red Wedding actually happenned.

GRRM once stated how that was the hardest chapter and the most painful he has had to write to date.

Hm, I don't know. There is an extreme realism to this series and just because the Frey's, most but not all, are devious bastards doesnt mean anything bad will come about. As in life, just because u do bad things on whatever level doesn not mean u will be punished. I know GRRM takes pride and notes on many occassions the realism his series provides.

Very true. Perhaps mine is just a vain hope. I do think though that the Twins are too valuable for the Freys to remain holding them for the rest of the series - and I think if Danys conquers Westeros the Freys will be cast down on account of them being massive losers. :p

The Freys have held the Twins for 600 years. Just because a book is now being written with part of their story is no reason for them to lose their holdings now ;). Walder Frey has to die eventually. Maybe the next Frey will be less of a jerk. Remember, even the Starks have had horrible and despicable Lords.

I'd say the Red Wedding affected me the most but then again, I'd probably think differently had I not known Ned was going to die. About halfway through reading AGOT I lost my page and skipped through trying to find it again. I came across something that caught my eye so much that I just had to read it again. It was Catelyn saying something like "They killed my husband" to the Northmen at the end. At first I thought she meant Brandon but no...
