Who's death? (SUPER MAJOR SPOILERS THROUGH AFFC)

It's been mentioned, but not picked up, Balor Breakspear.
This is one of the most emotional deaths in the series, the hand of the king and heir apparent is killed by his brother while defending the innocent from the acusations of his mad nephew. He was a True Knight!

The fact that his death is remembered as being "a tourny accident" just makes it worse, like he died for nothing.

I still get shivers thinking about it.

Rhaegars death, the death of the 3 remaining Kingsguards at the Tower of Joy, Renlys and Oberyns for myself.

I'd have to say the death that affected me most was Edward's sister.
"Bury me in Winterfell"

Throughout the whole series we are still seeing the pain & sorrow from that event.

When Edward flashes back to the last of the old Kingsguard facing off against the him & his guards that really makes me cringe too - it leaves all those questions of why it had to be that way since they already took their vengeance.

EDIT:

As for those I'm looking forward too ... oh man Sansa needs to go - without her Starks would still be a force in the game (no stupid wedding if Edward had escaped & was in charge)...stupid little girl with her idea of love. She got everything she's deserved so far, now for the knife...*righteous cackle*

What are u talking about Mirv with that quote?

The king is dead, the idiots & fools are dead - yet the Stags, Wolves, (Lions?) & Trout still keep going on to finish off the kingsguard ... what a waste.

I respect the sentiment that once you start a job, finish it (Bush Sr knew the folly of finishing project Iraq). Much like Bush Jr. though, these 'great' houses are reaping what they sowed - unlike the Bushes, though they had no choice but to revolt (which is what makes the story so fantastic).

Ned Stark's death was the biggest surprise for me, because it was the first book, he was a major character, and it seemed like he was going to get sent to the Wall. Then he got abruptly shortened, and that's when I started to really enjoy the story, because then I knew for sure that anything could happen.

The Red Wedding had a lot of foreshadowing. I didn't find it much of a shock.

The Freys won't be punished by the Gods for their revenge against Robb Stark, who after all had both betrayed and humiliated their House. Like in the story of the Rat Cook: feeding the sons of the Andal King to their father was no problem. The Gods are down with that; a man is entitled to take revenge. But messing with a guest is something the Gods just can't forgive. And that's the thing for which the Freys will be brutally, brutally punished.

I found the mutiny at Craster's a bit more of a shock than the Red Wedding. Things got nasty there in a hurry.

My favourite killing was Brienne doing Shagwell.

I don't understand why Walder Frey should die. He should live for a long life, to see all his sons, and daughters, and their sons and daughters, and their sons and daughters die, until he is the Last Frey on Westros.

Cersei is too cocky to survive in Westros. She thinks she knows something, while she knows nothing.

The Greatjon isn't dead, is he? He should be amongst the captives in Maeglor's Holdfast (unless the outlaws killed the new messenger, unless the outlaws freed them while going to the Maeglor's Holdfast).

I must say that I understood that Eddard Stark would die: No man with honour can live to play the Game of Thrones, as pretty much every other character had said. I never knew the Red Wedding was coming though... it was devastating. I actually thought that Arya died there also (the Arya chapter after it had her an axe moving towards her head...)

Who I want to see gone? I must say, that I wouldn't mind seeing half of Westros in the grave, but of major characters? Melisandre, Daenerys (imagine the face of ser Barristan after *that*) and perhaps also the schemers of Frey-Bolton.

@ Mirviriam: I guess you've forgotten that 'We Do Not Sow'?

The Red Wedding. The Red Wedding. The Bloody Red Wedding.

At the time Arya was my absolute favorite character. I was focused so much on that that I just wanted to get through the wedding quickly. I was so relieved that they had skipped the wedding and just showed the feast after. I was looking for to the hound busting in with a knife at Arya's throat and the reunion. but then ... BOOM. the bomb dropped. I was never close to Rob or Catelyn .. not like I was with others. But I did feel for Catelyn. Her loss (though she had not lost as much as she had thought)
that was the worst part. her never knowing. Her watching her "last" child die before her eyes. GODS. So hard. I was at lunch at work when I read this and the following chapter where I though he might have killed off arya too. I didnt talk for the rest of the day. I swore to never read GRRM again. when I got off work . I dug through the book and saw arya again and took back my vow. This is the the 1st emotional climax in the book i think. the next will be even bigger. and then the books will start shelling out closure.

Edit:
forgot to add who I'd like to see die.
I would have normally said SANSA, but I think that the relationship with Arya will hold huge emotional content and therefore I have since Changed my mind.
I would love to see
Lord Randall Tarly locked in a room and left for dead

You know nothing, Cersei Lannister :)

I actually don't agree. While I think Cersei's arrogance gets the better of her at times, she clearly has an understanding of political manipulation and in general, power. She is good at gathering inofrmation and is ruthless enough to follow through when she knows something must be done. Hmmm, that would be the game of thrones.

This will be strange...

but Viserys' death was very sad to me.

"That was all I wanted. What was promised to me"(or something among the lines) :(
It actually made me feel for him for a few seconds. :p

EDIT:

As for the person I wish to see dead...CATELYN. DEAD, not UNdead. ;)

And for the person whose death would make me choke in my tears...Jaime. :( :( Please, GRRM, keep him alive!!!

prior to reading these books, everybody who had recommended them to me had warned me to 'not get too close to characters, Martin kills them off' so I wasn't as suprised with a lot of the deaths as I would've been if not warned beforehand. The one death that really angered me, though was Beric Dondarrion's, especially when I found out that he gave his life for Catelyn Stark. Man, I can't stand her. Ever since the first few chapters of A Game of Thrones where she treats Jon terribly, I couldn't stand her. I always thought Beric was going to end up having a much larger role in the next books, as well.

guess not.

Welcome, dooley. It's good story telling that makes us hate Catelyn (one of the original protagonists) so much.

I also wondered if the Brotherhood would end up being a force to be reckoned with... guess they might all be hunted down and killed when the civil war ends.

Yes, Catelyn does indeed suck. However, the possibility of an undead Catelyn traipsing around the Trident does sound very much like a possibility of Lannister vengeance! I hope Brienne stays dead...

I just came to a theory that maybe it wasn't Davos's head they put on pike in White Harbor, but maybe that maimed hand really was his. He was fanatically loyal to Stannis and when they were making a ruse with Manderley, he simply told him :"You need a proof about my death, so chop off that famous hand of mine and but it beside some poor *******'s head, so they will think it's my head on pike. Well, call maester here with medicaments and chop off that damned arm quick and clean , like a head of some eel you love so much! Then sent message to Cersei and she will free your son, so you can start helping Stannis our true King"

But if it's somebody else's head, why not somebody elses hand? If you are going to the bother of chopping the head and the hand off a corpse, what extra bother is it to remove some finger joints as well? I'm sure a maester could easily mock it up so it looked genuine.

I can't see Davos cutting off his own hand, I'm afraid...

i think it was revealed that there are more davos chapters to come.
