What Game Are You Currently Playing?

A while ago, a friend lent me the 2018 game Marvel's Spider Man. I finished it over the weekend. It's a big-budget title, so you'd expect it to be pretty polished. It is, and the game mechanics are very good (especially swinging between buildings, which is great) but its story and the way its told are excellent. In particular, the descent into madness of Dr Octopus is really well portrayed. It's a good deal better than a lot of films that I've seen, which makes me wonder if games and TV shows will replace film in terms of storytelling, and film will become the place for predictable thrills that can be sold to a lot of different markets. Anyhow, this was a very good game and I'd recommend it.

I've also been playing a bit of Dredge, a game about a fisherman in a sea populated by weird Lovecraftian monsters. So far, so good: it's low-key and has an interesting mixture of the gentle and the sinister. I really like the low-poly graphics, which remind me of games on the Amiga and early PC.

I’ve also recently bought Dredge but have only had a few minutes play. I also like the graphics. They might be low poly but they’re also quite effective in setting a certain atmosphere. I usually cannot stand music in games but this one is an exception. I’ll probably turn it off eventually but I think I’ll leave it for a while yet before I do. The style reminds me of my favourite modern composer (Olafur Arnalds).

Overall, I think this could be an intriguing little game.

Did my first stint of night fishing in Dredge (hunting for squid). Things got a bit wierd with lots of strange lights and the compass turning into a sort of madness-ometer with a Sauron type eye who seemed to be searching for me. I got hopelessly lost and eventually had to consult the options menu to find the key for the map (it’s M of course).

I still feel this game could do with a small manual in PDF. I think, if the developers had given it a little thought, they could have written a manual in the style of an old log book penned by the player’s predecessor (a fisherman who mysteriously disappeared). It could have been found on the docks or boat and not only give instructions on how to play but could have been used as a tool to increase the mystery via an unfinished tale.

30 hours into Baldur's Gate 3 and, so far, it's awesome. Took me a while to find my best party/class combination and get to grips with combat tactics and, whilst I wouldn't say I've mastered it, I am having a hell of a lot of fun with it. Just had a string of large battles in a goblin encampment and it was fantastic. Shoving enemies into a pit of giant spiders is quite satisfying  Apart from that, the companions and their various stories are very engaging.

I'm a great fan of BG1 and BG2 and their addons. Having seen the trailer for BG3 it looks to have somewhat deviated . Considering it was 23 years ago since BG2 was released that was always going to be the case.

I would have been very happy with a 2D sequel with the further adventures of Minsc & Boo, Imoen, Neera and Keldorn, but that was not to be.

I probably will pick it up to see once the inevitable patches and upgrades have been released.

Will give this a watch when I get back to the hotel. My daughter told me the game looks great though and her gaming opinion is S tier.

Current party decided to pose for a photo

MC is on the right. She's a Drow Sorcerer, currently lvl 5.

I've been hooked and now I'm being reeled in. I'm talking, of course, about Dredge. Even as a little fishing game, it's fun but I've had a couple of Lovecraftian encounters that were quite disturbing. The first was when I spied a wreck and went to investigate - only to find that the wreck had been appropriated by a gigantic hermit crab. It was probably more Ray Harryhausen than Lovecraft when the wreck came to life but I was happy just to be steaming away from it. The second encounter was some kind of huge, ugly fish that insists on stalking me and ramming my boat every time I go to a certain part of an island. When it appears, everything turns a strange mix of colours and the nearby cliffs rumble and topple boulders into the sea.

It's a slow burn story and I'm enjoying this game a lot.

I really like Dredge. Everything it does, it does really well.

I've also been playing Deep Sky Derelicts, a game where you control a small team of spacemen getting salvage from abandoned spaceships. It's not a kind of game I usually go for (the combat is done by playing cards) but it's atmospheric, looks good and isn't outrageously hard. Worth a go.

I have Deep Sky Derelicts. I got it as a freebie from GOG a while back. I've yet to even look at it (which makes me wonder if giving away the odd free game is actually a good thing....if I'd paid for it, I'd probably have tried it by now).

I think I got it for free, too - I have no memory of buying it. It's quite decent.

"Shoving enemies into a pit of giant spiders is quite satisfying" , Love that part of the game too:ROFLMAO:good job, Larian ~

Fallout 4 GOTY is now available at GOG.com (at last).
Currently priced at £8.79
Downloading now. I know what I’ll be playing after I tire of Dredge (might be a while yet).

And talking of Dredge - currently trying to salvage a relic and avoid some massive tentacled creature in the abyss. Been killed a few times attempting this.

Of course, it backfired on me because Ragzlin came over and did some massive AOE attack that knocked my MC into the pit as well  Fortunately the spiders were facing away from her, so she was able to sneak by without getting eaten
