New GRRM Update on ADWD

Can of worms, Pandora's Box, floodgates, whatever term to describe this subject, I don't want any real part.

I just wanted to point out that any f/f scenes in the books (and there have not have been many) have been relatively short - Dany and her handmaiden comes to mind.

Personally, I don't really care either way.

Well if Martin only has 5 chapters left that means he can take his time with the book and not have to rush anything.

I agree.

As LordSnow pointed out, we've seen almost every variation on the theme. Adding M/M wouldn't be a stretch. To be honest, the thought that anyone would want more/different sex scenes in the series never crossed my mind.

In the words of the iconic (and sarcastic) Bugs Bunny:

Har-DEE-har-har, har HAR har.

I think we'd all agree that what's needed is enough f/k** action to get the book finished.

Can't say I would crave M/M scenes, but in the interests of fairness .... :D

Personally I found the Dany & Cersei female sex scenes a bit icky and not altogether relevant to the plot (Dany's scene with her handmaid, certainly, felt a little unnecessary. Cersei's I suppose could be justified in showing how she likes to dominate).

Personally, I doubt if the woman asking for these scenes were all that serious. I just took it that there was some bantering and teasing going on.

Yes, it does seem suspiciously like teasing, and GRRM in turn seems to be teasing us.

I don't think I can call what GRRM needs to write about. He does specialize in disturbing. I'm sure he would do it well.

He already did put in the Loras/Renly romance, but it isn't spelled out completely. That is already brave for many fantasy books. The gay warrior relationship is pretty common in history though. (Richard the Lionheart/Alexander the Great/Achilles/and ummm can't remember Hadrian?)Maybe he will put in some details for M/M--seems tame to me. Why not?

Yes, I think he is trying to establish that Cersei is dominant and is not content with a woman's role in society. And even though she liked to trade clothes with Jaime, and resents male status and perks, she is not satisfied by a lesbian relationship, (and wants Jaime) and that those things don't necessarily go together.

I think he is trying to show that Dany has not lost her mojo, yet doesn't want a woman or servant in an established romantic relationship, and can't pair her with another male(or female) yet.

Yes, I think he wants to show that Jon likes women, and does learn some skills (which I imagine that he will put to use later on, either that or he will heroically deny himself). Likewise, I think he wants to show that Sam likes women, even though his father maltreated him for insufficiently macho behavior.

I imagine that GRRM knows that sex sells, hotness is fun, and the different variations are part of life. He also does like breaking taboos, being a gadfly and pushing the boundaries of the genre.

I was thinking some more about Dany's scene with her handmaid, and at the time my feeling was just that Dany was really quite lonely. She missed Khal Drogo, but wasn't quite ready for a new relationship yet. I suppose a lesbian sex scene is one way of portraying that!!

Well said, Eulalia! The thing I love most about the series is that it is ground-breaking, controversial and well-written.

I liked her so far, but i have a feeling i ain't gonna like certain parts that GRRM is up with her. Like she"ll become a walking cliché of a woman rights movement.

Two words: More Asha!!!!!!!!

Meh. Before AFFC I liked her, but being inside her head turned me off. The same with Theon. Infact, all the Iron Islanders. Although I'd like to see more of Euron.

More Mellisandre sez I. Lets see what kinda freaky s**t she has on her mind. And her crazy faith in the Lord of Light.

And on the theme of girl on girl, I don't think thats an issue. Messana is right, ground-breaking, controversial and well-written.

I've thought of an (almost) appropriate comment, Mouse, but it's also highly inappropriate for a family site.:eek:

Never mind.... :(;):)

Brave? Clearly I buy my SF&F novels in a different section of the bookstore (or possibly an alternate universe) to everyone else...

Perhaps if I ask him nicely, GRRM will send his Irish women my way when my book comes out ;)

Yes, Anne. I would say at the very least, the UK is in a parallel universe to the USA. The political scene here is full of sexual orientation being used as a wedge issue, and discrimination is rampant and rationalized by a sizeable portion of the population. Any more explicit there and GRRM risks book burnings and blacklisting. Maybe even hate crimes.

I think GRRM is quite brave to make some of his featured characters have a gay relationship, complete with rainbow Kingsguard.

Clansmen had a wonderful list of SFF. I notice that Jacqueline Carey and Elizabeth Bear are not on it...

Possibly we buy books in different sections of the store. :) I don't know, can't think of any section that I haven't been in, except for Romance. However, in the USA, they may not have the same sections. Even Amazon has been "tidied" up.

Tell us more about your books!

Interesting - a lot of the fiction on my shelves is from the US, but I admit the recent gay stuff (e.g. "The Steel Remains" by Richard Morgan) is by British writers. I had no idea things were getting so bad over there! Well, I was aware of #amazonfail, because one of my offline writer buddies is Alex Beecroft, whose gay romance got a lot of publicity out of it - but she and another writer friend both publish GLBT fiction with US small presses, so what you say did indeed come as something of a surprise. I guess big businesses are much more inclined to bow to public pressure than the small ones.

My first novel is a fantasy set in Elizabethan England and has several gay characters; the hero is basically straight but at the start of the book he is, for the want of any other outlet, ****-buddies with his gay best friend *lol* What little sex there is "on screen" is not explicit, but the subject is handled as openly as the straight relationship that makes up the main romantic subplot.

It's currently under consideration by a UK publisher - but maybe I should cancel my plans to come to World Fantasy in 2011? :)

Congratulations for writing your novel!( Elizabethan England c.1593 is cool).

I think you would be fine in California, at World Fantasy 2011, as long as you weren't counting on getting married to a same sex partner--though maybe.:)

Hi Anne,
I hope you are successful with your novel, please keep us updated on your progress. I have something of a mini-obsession with Christopher Marlowe, and I've read a lot of fiction set around this era, so I think your book would be right up my street!
Good luck :)
