New GRRM Update on ADWD

In the latest entry to Not a Blog, GRRM has this link

http://io9.com/5656513/

to a podcast that was recorded this past Srping. All of the Ice and Fire stuff starts at around the 44 minute mark. GRRm explains "The Knot" in a way that makes a lot of sense, but makes me think that at some point you reach a point where you say "that's a wrap". You'll see what i mean. Really good stuff though.
Just an FYI, you can't move directly to the 44 minute point, but you can drag the progress arrow across 7 or 8 times to get there quickly. Just let the audio play for a second each time

I found that once the interview was fully loaded (after a few minutes) I could - and did - skip to the 44 min point. Thanks for the link though, Imp.

And there I was thinking that GRRM must've overcome the majority of the knot by now, but it certainly doesn't seem to be the case after hearing that.

Maybe he should just kill a few characters off to lighten the load :D

and there was me gettting excited as I pre-ordered Dance today lol

Keep in mind that the interview was taped last Spring. He's had 5 months, minus trips, to hack away at it. :D

Ah. I was going to ask when that was recorded, but assumed it was recent. Thanks for clearing that up, Imp.

And TK - George Martin, kill characters? No. Never. I reckon it's all plain sailing from here on in. :)

Putting together info from a number of sources, this is the current state of play on ADWD:

* ADWD is currently about 1,500 MS pages (manuscript pages) in length.
* ADWD is 5 chapters from completion. Those 5 chapters exist in varying states of drafts and partial chapters.
* Those 5 chapters may take ADWD over Bantam's informal page limit of 1,530 MS pages (the size of A STORM OF SWORDS). Either material will have to move into TWoW (THE WINDS OF WINTER, Book 6 in the series) or Bantam will give the book a few more pages.
* At this time we only have confirmation of 100 MS pages and four chapters moving from ADWD into TWoW.
* The other 90%+ of ADWD is page-edited, typeset, locked and ready to go. The new maps and the appendices are also all locked and ready to go. The cover art was ready years ago.
* Bantam hope for a 3 month turn-around on the book. But Voyager in the UK are still expected to release the book earlier, even if it's only days or a week or two compared to the months for the previous volumes.
* Bantam really want the book done by Christmas so they can announce the release date after New Year's Day. That gives GRRM 6-7 weeks to finish the book after returning home in early November. Martin himself has notably not commented on the situation, so it is not known if that is doable. However, he finished the last few chapters of the previous two volumes in a frenzy of last-minute writing, so it is possible.

All going well, if Bantam get their wish and GRRM hands the book in before Christmas, it should hit the shelves in April or May. From a marketing perspective that is doubly tempting, as that will be slap bang in the middle of the first season of the TV series airing on HBO.

Conclusion: Look to GRRM's blog from early November onwards for, hopefully, the beginning of the end.

Considering how long they and fans have waited for I think extra pages would be the least Bantam would give to have the book finished and on the shelves - though I am somewhat glad that they enforce that rough page limit, as anyone whose ever read one of Peter F. Hamiltons paperbacks will say (1200pages is far too many for a paperback of standard size to hold!)

A fairly terrifying statistic: ASoS and ADWD are approximately 70,000 words (an entire short novel) longer than PFH's The Reality Dysfunction, although they're about the same size as The Naked God.

Hmmm, I wonder if that means ADwD will be split into two again in the UK. I really hope it's available on the Kindle from day one. I'm sick of holding huge, heavy hardbacks. Was very disappointed that Towers of Midnight won't be released as an ebook for another year. Hopefully Voyager will be a bit more forward thinking.

I don't mind big heavy hardbacks so long as you don't have to crack the whole thing in half to read all the text. Though I would like it if they could come with more - decoration. It would be nice to see a few more fantasy books on the market with inserted art beyond LoTR - and with some nicer more graphic front covers to the actual hardback book and not just the dustcover.

I've still got my order at Amazon uk active. It doesn't seem so far away now!

Sounds like the MMP will definitely be in two volumes, as they just can't make them that big without them falling apart. Hardbacks can be bound differently (using both thread and glue), and are therefore more durable, but for MMPs pretty much all you have is glue. Too big, and the glue gives out during the first read.

Thanks, Wert. We'd still be the blind leading the blind without you.

We'll see what kind of kick that GRRM has to finish his marathon.

That's funny. Now what cliffhangers will he leave with us? Sam on a diet? Arya becoming a Silent Sister? King Tyrion? Robert reborn?

I just finished the Portland Marathon this past Sunday. I wonder if it was as painful for me as it's been for GRRM.

Is GRRM in his latest blog informing us he saw some action?

LOL I just read it again and the mind does boggle! :D

I liked the part where he said his fans were asking for some guy on guy scenes! Maybe we'll see some hot Loras lurve LMAO!!

I know this is a hot topic in todays society so i'll tread carefully....

I particularly wouldnt want to read any m/m scenes, personally because its not my cup of tea and GRRM writes too well and may stay too long on that scene. However, after reading his "not a blog" it appears that some women are into this. I guess this is the only other sexual experience not graphically detailed in the series thusfar, (as incest, m/f, f/f, (gang) and regular rape, pedophilia (although somewhat excepted during this time period), and sexual disfigurement has already reared its ugly head)

If GRRM didnt throw Igrette into the mix, Jon could have been a little suspect in his thinking to join the Watch knowing he couldnt have a wife or mess around with momen. Not saying that being honorable and taking this duty makes you homosexual.

Is this the case with the women on this forum, craving for m/m action like the Irish women GRRM encountered?
