New GRRM Update on ADWD

1. A Game of Thrones August 1996
2. A Clash of Kings November 1998
3. A Storm of Swords August 2000
4. A Feast for Crows October 2005
5. A Dance with Dragons August 2011
6. The Winds of Winter September 2017
7. A Dream of Spring August 2023
I'd have to say this timetable is pretty gloomy. I mean if ADWD had come out like a year after AFFC then you could call that "splitting a book".
Right now it just seems that after ASOS he had completely no idea how to solve the knot so he wrote AFFC which gives us a pretty compelling story yet rather irrelevant to the main story and characters.

With that said...It's been 11 years since the last ACTUAL book.
Quoting Cee-Lo "Ain't that some shi..."

The other announcement was definitely, 100%, ADWD. At the signing, GRRM said that he'd hoped to announce it was done, but he'd been out of commission from his illness and it would now follow 'soon'*.

* Note: George R.R. Martin's definition of 'soon' may not match that of his readers.
That's great to hear. From this I'm going to infer that he thought he MIGHT be able to make the announcement of ADWD on Jan. 9th, which to me says he was VERY close to completion, or at the very least, close enough to think he might be done by that date. While it's impossible to know for sure (he may not have been done anyway) his illness very likely made completing ADWD impossible by that date. The complicating factor is we don't know if he would have been done even if he was healthy, which makes specualtion about when he might be done now "speculative" :)

I'm just going to sit here quietly, waiting for my "birthday present"

And thanks to Wert for his comment - we're gonna have to start calling him the Lightbringer...

On a side-note, Imp, I trust you've seen the Make Love Not Warcraft episode of South Park. A priceless 20-25 minutes of comedy.

the afterwords of AFFC GRRM made me believe that ADWD was almost complete.

Gosh, this is tempting, but I won't.

Welcome to the Chrons, BaDHaBiTt (that is very annoying to type). You wouldn't happen to be a fan of the punk rock band The Monks, would you?;)

You should hop to the introductions thread:
Introductions - Science Fiction Fantasy Chronicles: forums, and introduce yourself, and browse around here. GRRM is not the only game in town (good thing, too, or we wouldn't have read anything since 2004.)

thank you, thank you... I will browse that thread... If I may go a little off topic here.... A couple of years ago I read a fantasy novel written by a black author... Can anyone tell me if they know of any black fantasy author, because I can't remember his name or the name of the book, and I really want to read the next volume of that series.

-EDIT- Found it. David Anthony Durham, I really recommend his book

Can you pm me with a few more details on this book please? What makes it so good - not heard of him before so by the sounds of things might be worth a try?

well, the easiest way to give you info is to visit the authors website, which I posted earlier. I really recommend his work.

He's a historical fiction author who's switched to writing fantasy. The trilogy is called ACACIA and consists of THE WAR AGAINST THE MEIN, THE OTHER LANDS and THE SACRED BAND, which is due out later this year. I haven't read it, but it's been well-received in general. GRRM himself has said it's excellent.

By the description, I thought you meant even darker than dark fantasy, i.e. black fantasy. You know, something more than juvenile fantasy, high fantasy, or historical fantasy... uh, black fantasy. After looking up the author, David Durham, and reading a review of Acacia, I now know you meant black (African-American) author of fantasy. Was it just me that misunderstood? Man, how the world changes. When I was a kid, everyone was red, brown, yellow, black, or white. Just when I get used to the current terms... someone slips an old one in on me. Well, from the review and the fact that Wert said GRRM liked Acacia... I might be trying it soon.

Funny how different eras have different effects. For instance, it's clear, just from the novel's title, that Acacia: The War with the Mein was written in the Bush era.:eek::)

Seriously, though: one can see from the Wiki article why GRRM might like it:
The novel is notable for the complexity of Durham's imagined world, one in which political, economic, mythological and morally ambiguous forces all influence the fates of the ethnically and culturally diverse population.

sorry, english is not my native language so I may not be up to date with the current politically correct racial terms.... :D

Your English is fine. My problem is that I'm not fluent in my native language.

I read Acacia. A good book generally, but the characters were uninspiring. I just didn't care what happened to them.

Good threadjack, btw. Might as well have something to do while waiting for the next update on ADWD.

For anyone that didn't get the Skull Island reference in GRRM's latest Not A Blog posting, it's the home of King Kong :D
