Yeah, I think it would take something like the destruction of the Wall and the end of the NW to make Jon leave. However, the permanent dissolution of the NW would mean one of two things: a) an Others victory over the realms of men or b) a total annihilation of the Others.
I find neither of these options particularly palatable.
I would be really dissappointed if the Others are destroyed in their entirety - it would be far too happy an ending to fit GRRM's style; evil is always there - you can drive it back into the shadows, but not destroy it. Sure, they could be turned and fought back into the far North, but the threat of the Others being ended once and for all? No way, too convenient.
The more I think about it, though, the more I suspect we might see hordes of Others south of the Wall.
