Casting news from the TV series

As long as she's on top of her own lines and takes direction, I couldn't care less what books she reads.

I think a bigger danger may be those who know the ultimate fate of their characters. (Not just whether they live or die, but how more or less sympathetic they may become as ASoIaF progresses.) If their character is (un)sympathetic in AGoT, the book, it ought to be so in season one of AGoT, the TV series, whatever happens in ACoK, ASoS and AFFC, the books.

Good actors, scriptwriters and directors should all do their best to bring AGoT to the screen and then do the same for the other books.

ASOIAF highlights from the interview Wert linked...

I don't get the feeling that Lena Headey wants to read ASOIAF nor feels that she needs to read it. I'm disheartened by this.

She seems to understand Cersei's character pretty well though. No matter what it won't be a perfect recreation of the books anyway. Better to lower your expectations so you won't be disappointed like you were with Lord of the Rings.

Describe your character in "Game of Thrones" in 5 words or less.
smart , insecure, ferociously maternal, cutthroat, paranoid.

Don't worry Boaz. She's already rewriting the rules to suit her. Just look! Six words!

New post up on LiveJournal about Syrio being cast. He's a pretty good match for what I had in my head, visually.

Commence debate on whether we get to see him die.

edit: Oh, and Sam too! Same reaction from me, except for the dying part.

Excellent news.

HBO is building a cast that should do the project proud.

I thought he was good in that show (though some credit must go to the writers).

In the Wire, his character was quite complex: someone looking for a cause on which to further his career, then someone who seemed to believe the cause; someone who was prepared to temper his philandering, but not necessarily because he'd become more moral. And in a strange way, the character became more likeable even as he accepted more and more compromises to stay in power.

It strikes me that Aidan Gillen has had the right experience for taking on the rôle of Littlefinger.

I must admit that I didn't know who he was from the name alone but as soon as I checked the link and seen his photo I remembered him instantly.

He wasn't how I had pictured Petyr in my mind but now I think he is a brilliant choice. I don't know if anyone else knows what I mean by this but he just has a cheeky face, which is vital for anyone playing this role to be honest. I can see him smirking at Bean now.

Killing him on TV would be a dramatic departure from the book. Why would they want to eliminate a great point of pspeculation when they don't need to? The only point to killing him would be to show Arya's reaction. That won't happen, so why bother?

Can anyone vouch for how good he is in the Wire?

I echo Ursa in the fact that he was able to play the complex role of the Mayor in "The Wire" with somewhat ease, as i understood why he made some of the shady decisions he made while trying to stay in power.

One of my favorite scenes with him in "The Wire" is when as a newly appointed mayor and putting his foot down, he walked into several city buildings and said something along the effect "There's an abandoned car on the street, take care of it" and "Theres a playground with chipping paint on the swingsets" and didnt say where. Which prompted them to go around the whole city removing abandoned cars and repainting all of the parks.

I think he will do a good job, and i cant wait to see him tell Ned, with a dagger under his chin "I did warn you not to trust me!" That was an intense scene.

Brilliant. Check out the clips, but beware massive amounts of swearing (inluding unmitigated use of the c-bomb):

Carcetti on the campaign trail.

Carcetti in the campaign office.

Carcetti does a speech.

The genius of Carcetti's character is that he starts off with good intentions and he does keep them right through the series. However, almost with every passing episode he has to make a compromise here, a deal there and by the end of the series he is just another politician, constrained by having to spin figures and juggle funds around from department to department to deal with various crises and never able to engage with the root of the problems of the city. Very nicely done.

For those familiar with The Wire and Carcetti's place in it, but who are unfamiliar with ASoIaF, it will add to the character's depth: is Littlefinger a good guy who knows how the game is played, or a bad guy who can mask his ill-intentions with charm and intelligence?

(And while I guess that most people who've read the books will be choosing the latter over the former, it's not a foregone conclusion, particlualrly as GRRM is more than bit tricksy.)

Gillen's current TV rôle in Identity, that of a "former" deep cover policeman who may not have left his double life behind - and who doesn't merely bend the rules to get the right result, but breaks them - will only add to the UK viewers' confusion about Littlefinger's intentions (in a good way).

After all, at one point we all hated Jaime...

In any case, I can't help but admire Littlefinger. He's a bloody brilliant player of the game.

I've only seen Gillen in "Queer as Folk" in which he was brilliant.
Sure, he doesn't look exactly as I had pictured Littlefinger, but from what I've seen of him, I'm confident that he can pull it off and do it well.

Chel, if that double-entendre was intentonal, you have my admiration, it's a classic. If not, you, er, might want to read your post again and edit while there's still time.

I'll let it stand and pretend it was intentional! (...does that count as another one?)

GRRM has updated his blog.

It seems an actor named Jamie Sives (Get Him to the Greek, Clash of the Titans) has been cast as Jory Cassel.

He has also confirmed that extras will fill the roles of the other men in Ned's escort and guard at KL, including Fat Tom, Vayon Poole and Desmond.
