Star Trek (2009)

Isn't the next film going to centre around when TOS crew first met. I hear that Zachary Quinto (Sylar from Heroes) will be playing Spock.

Yes. Quinto is Spock and IMDB has the full cast list.

Very dubious about Simon Pegg as Scotty!

The new Star Trek film trailer 2 was released early this week:
Apple - Trailers - Star Trek

A bit more eye-candy, but still seems somehow at odds with a sense of the first season.

Something I've rounded on Star Trek for is how they started looking back - it was as though the production team just couldn't plot anything interesting in a future for the Trek universe, or perhaps they couldn't handle tying up all of the different spin-offs into a coherent universe (continuity being a weak point at the best of times).

Anyway, am sure the film will be fun and good, but somehow remain distance in all ways from the original series.

The only and most interesting thing about the newer Star Treks (sorry, I'm a big fan of the old and it was really hard for me to like Next Gen et al) was The Q, I really wish they would have expanded more on that idea.

I'm glad to see JJ Abrams directing it, I like his work (not so much Lost, but eh) and I think he has a good feel for both tech magic and human emotion (which is hard to do both in films).

Chris Pine as Kirk? Not to sure about that one, but we'll have to see I guess.

This is supposed to be about Kirk and crew pre-series I believe, which seems pretty interesting and a generally neat idea. Well, it can't be any worse than The Voyage Home (the whale one, blech) and Nemesis (the dumb one with those people on that planet).

I don't want to sound too purist, but I really hope they don't screw up the Romulans. They are almost as cool as the Klingons.

Looks awesome, though I absolutely HATE the original series, how anyone can like that crap is beyond me, Star Trek didn't become good until the first movie...

I'm not sure what I think of this, visually or in terms of the plot. Sometimes I think they keep cranking out new Star Trek productions only because it is now seen as a money maker. I have thought for years that the quality of Star Trek has been decreasing, so I don't have my hopes that I will like this one any more.

I think that franchise should go into hibernation for a decade, and then let it revive again, just as it happened once before.

How can anyone hate the original Star Trek? OMG its too cool. I love it.

LOL Cul @ "emotional baggage"

The original series had lousy effects and cheap looking plastic sets, but some of the stories were fantastic, timeless even. They dealt with racism, war, interferance with local politics, artificial intelligence, the hippy movement - and that's just the social science fiction. They also had stories of parallel dimensions, time travel, and artificial intelligence.

When the old series was good, it was science fiction at its best.

Agreed, SFFan...and have a look at some of the writers they had working for them...Robert Bloch, Theodore Sturgeon, Nomad Spinrad, Harlan Ellison...

That's effectively what happened to Dr Who and it seems to have worked...

I don't know if I'm going to want to watch this. I prefer TNG myself, and Simon Pegg as Scotty isn't inspiring confidence.

I don't think I'm going to watch it. I think this franchise should be laid to rest for a couple of decades. Or perhaps even be laid to a well-deserved rest.

I mean, we may be in space in a big way in 20 years, and that would pave the way for a new story with new premises. Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon are long gone, and the recent attempt to revive Flash Gordon failed. So the same may happen to Star Trek. I think it will, actually.

I used to watch Star Trek when it first started and really enjoyed it. This new film could never take the place of the original, at least for me.

I'm looking forward to watching it. Its a shame nothing was done with Enterprise. A promising series there,if only they'd have got better music! That song is so naff!
