A Dance With Dragons: Speculation?

I certainly believe that there is a link between the Others reappearing and dragons been reborn, they seem to be old enemies and the fact that the others has risen in turn leads to the dragons being reborn to oppose them. I also think there is a possibility of Coldhands being an Other (or have some connection to the others) or possibly a child of the forest. I think he has Benjen with him too or knows where he is

I also don't think Arya is permanently blind. I believe it's either the next stage of her training, as Whiteblade says (welcome, by the way!), or it's a punishment because she killed that Night Watch guy without speaking to anyone about it first.

There are some theories kicking around that The Others aren't evil, they're just misunderstood! I've read some discussion in the past about that. Same with R'hllor. Is he/she good or evil? Seems kinda evil to me, but I guess it all depends where you're standing. Mostly, I'm just desperate to learn more about both sides and I hope we get that (and there are some hints that we may from the reviews I've read).

I think Sam will dig something up in Oldtown, either from the Library or the Maesters

Remember that blind guy that had to light the candles? and the Kindly man sayd that he would have to feel the warmth of the candles to determine where the candles were out and which ones had to be lighted?
Perhaps that was a part of that guy's training and Arya has reached that part of the training program.
He couldt tell her about this before since she hadn't officially joined, but now...

Juleska, I am quite sure Arya will not die anytime soon. The reason Arya has little chapters lately is because she is training, so GRRM will not kill her off before she has played her part in the story which is presumably after she has completed her training. Also, im pretty sure that when she dies, she will die as Arya from House of Stark rather than No one. Otherwise her death will be insignificant and will play no part is advancing the story....

SPOILER ALERT! regarding Starks and Lannister characters.

whiteblade, welcome!

I believe that Arya's loss of sight is temporary, but my friend Trunk thinks it is a permanent condition.

GRRM has done a masterful job of telling his story so far. Mayhaps the most gripping aspect is how he introduced the Starks, en masse, as the protagonists and not just individual characters while framing the Lannisters as the antagonists as a group... and then how he's slowly twisted these group characterizations.

Eddard was the most honorable man in the story. He loved his wife and kids. He was loyal to Robert. He took Sansa's anger upon himself just to deny the Queen joy. And then he showed mercy to Cersei, lied to Robert, acted self-righteous with Baelish, and plunged the realm into war.

His sons were honorable. Until they met women. Then they broke their vows. They killed and did not know if it was right.

His daughters were good girls. They were wide eyed and fun loving. But without Eddard, they've sinned... especially Arya. How many people has that eleven year old girl killed? We might be up to double digits now. We could justify her actions, but justifying killing brings us to Jaime.

Jaime was introduced as the Kingslayer... and he promptly attempted to murder Bran. Only Gregor may have commited more sins than Jaime, but no one has commited more treason than Jaime Lannister. The big one is the assassination of Aerys II Targaryen, but Jaime claimed it was justified. And it appears that Jaime saved tens of thousands of innocent lives. He's also attempted to save the lives of Eddard's girls.

Tywin was a cold man. No one in Westeros compares to Tywin in sheer ruthlessness. He's exterminated families. He sacked the capital once! Yet, he was the person most active in preserving the Seven Kingdoms.

Tyrion is immediately shown to be both hideous and brilliant... an evil description for sure. Yet he quickly proved himself compassionate and brave. From time to time he was ruthless and manipulative, but he longed to be kind.

To date, the Starks are not as pure, nor the Lannisters as evil, as we were led to believe in AGOT. Humans long for good, yet are drawn consistently to their own selfishness. Humans commit both good and evil.

Now all that was to say that I do not think that the Others are like humans. The Others kill people. They turn them into wights, i.e. murderous zombies. They do the same to animals. They bring cold. I call all of that evil. I don't know any good that comes from them.

Mayhaps I'm still upset from Warcraft. Warcraft started as Orcs v. Humans. The story was that the Orcs were savages driven from their homeworld. They did not try to negotiate with the Humans, they just invaded to find a place to live... they justified killing for survival. So the sides are not good and evil, they are Humans and Orcs. Anyway, after many games some Undead joined the Orcs... and the Orcs were renamed the Horde... yet they were still misunderstood by the Humans. Necromancy, Blood Magic, and cannibalism did not render the Horde as evil. And that's just dumb.

Murderous and malicious corpses are not evil. Does gravity still work?

But then what if the original nice and cuddly Others** had their home, the good parts of Westeros, forcibly taken from them, after which they were banished, with the aid of magic, to the part of Westeros that is always winter? And for 8000 years.

For the Others, Winter Isn't Coming, it's always and it's for good (as it were). In the circumstances, I might think about resorting to the use of wights. (And it has that delicious sense of using your enemy against your enemy.)

** - And the name, Others, is obviously designed to denigrate these poor wretches, a sure sign that spin is being used to hide the truth.

I agree that GRRM does not depict his characters as black and white (good and evil) and that every character is a shade of gray.
That being said, the same thing could apply to the Others as well.
1. The Others bring cold: Maybe its the cold that brings the Others.
2. They kill people: They kill the people that attack them..self defence I would say. If some human attacks you with a murderous intent, you would need to retaliate. Even animals would do the same.
3. They kill animals: Doesn't mean that they are evil. Animals kill animals, humans kill animals, dragons kill animals, why not the Others as well?

Every creature/being will have a violent side. Since we are already assuming that the Others are "evil", whenever they show their violent side, we assume that they are doing it because they are evil.

the Others have been driven far up north and trapped by the wall by humans (presumably), so they probably resent humans. Now large groups of humans are invading the little territory they have left. How else should they act if not aggressivly?

Basically, we dont have enough information to judge them yet. We're gonna have to wait for the next book.

Total change of topic - but wondering if the Blackfish is the new POV? Can anyone confirm who it is yet?

You nailed it Whiteblade!

To say the Others are evil because they kill people doesn't wash Boaz, not in this story with death and destruction everywhere. I know we are meant to think they are evil, but given how twistyturny Mr. Martin is, this sets off an alarm with me. As you've outlined above, no one is black or white in this book (except Joff!), so it's not impossible that The Others have reasons for their behaviour that are justifiable to them. Though, whether we mere mortals can comprehend the motivations of Ice Vampires remains to be seen! ;)

I honestly don't know if they're good or bad. Basically, I'm not judging just yet. R'hllor seems similarly evil (i.e. shows little regard for human life), but I want more information before I commit myself to hating them! And I really hope we get it in the next book.

Arya's blindness may or may not be permanent. Personally I think it temporary, due to the potion, used for both punishment and training. Even if it is permanent, it will not matter, she will see through other eyes anyway!

I have to vote evil for the others, yet whether Coldhands is really one of them has not been proven at all!

Hey, it's not out yet, so it's still the next book. After all, the world could end tonight. You never know!
:D
Oh Messanna! What a horrible thought! No God, old or new, could be that cruel!:(

Give me one more week please, you old Gods!!

In less than 24 hours, all speculation ends.

I may not write a lot, but I do read a lot of this forum. Since I'm not getting my copy of the book until August 1 and will take quite a while to read it... it's farewell SFF Chronicles until probably late August for me.

I'll miss you guys.

I hope when I wake up it's on my pop's kindle.

I may be skipping school tomorrow and tucking in to a cup of Pike's for a few hours before work and foregoing Practical Math Applications for Business.

I'm pretty sure the world will understand.

Wiggs, you're skipping class? But I thought you are the teacher?!?!

Lol, you're not the first person to say that, and I think it's a compliment. :)

The teach in my family is my pop, go to page four, after John Nash

Funny thing is I'm pretty sure I'm the only person on the planet that can say he smoked out a squirrel warren last night with a Steele prize winner that was carrying a shovel and had a headlamp on.
