HBO officially commissions Season 1 of GAME OF THRONES

I confess I got the joke as well. I think *groan* would accurately describe my initial reaction, but I couldn't post it because I was at work when I read it. Sorry Boaz, I didn't mean to ignore your pun :)

Also, for the record, I enjoy jokes even when I groan at them.
then "two peanuts were walking down the street, one was assulted" should produce many groans (courtesy of my niece :) )

* Expects Boaz is thinking of starting a thread entitled: A Game of Groans. *

Thank you, Ursa, Imp,No one, Boaz and all! I love the Game of Thrones I honestly felt it a tad dull until about a third of the way thru then the proverbial S hit the fan and loved every word since.

My favorite charachters so far are Jon Snow, Eddard (of course) Arya and the Imp. Looking forward to the HBO series and will read the next two books and see you folks in a few months. sniff and cry.
Thanks again guys!!

They give good advice. I ended up spoiling a few plot points and twists for myself by not being very careful about what I read, and it can be a bummer. I still was blown away by the books, but to have had no idea what was around the bend the first time reading through would've been something!

What's this equation? I've never heard of it.

I've obviously had delusions of comedy... uh, now I'm the resident set up man, for Culhwch and Co.

Conor, I was liking AGOT until it hit the fan. At that point, GRRM hooked me.

Well, here I am and not sure about the "genius" label as I am trying to get to where the ash cloud is (London) instead of running away from it. Well, I have no choice because of work.

Anyways, are there safe threads. Well that depends what you want to talk about.

The HBO series, sure there are some, such as:

Casting news from the TV series
HBO's first season for AGOT is 10 episodes long
Filming updates from the HBO TV series
Are you happy about the TV series?
Is it okay to discuss casting for the HBO series?
TV series shooting location and dates confirmed.

Anywho, the point is, until you have read the other books, don't even think about the other hundreds of threads on this forum. They are all full of spoilers written by people who have read and re-read the books.

TK should really put a spoiler alert in front of his avatar picture... he's ruined Star Wars for me.

Conor, You know when it hit the fan in AGOT? Well, there's another fan completely destroyed in ASOS... And for that reason alone, I'd highly advise to stay away until you're caught up. Then hurry back and post, "I cried when...", "I rejoiced when...", "I almost wet myself when....", and "I hate... with a passion."

One of the joys of ASoIaF is the presence of game-changing surprises, Conor. Don't deprive yourself of getting their full impact.

(As for TK's avatar: it's a subtle hint at the title of the new Star Wars VII: The Empire Strokes Back.)

Honestly, I don't know that I'd even risk it. For instance, the "10 episodes in the season" thread breaks down into a discussion of how the episodes should end. This comes replete with at least 1/2 dozen major spoiler moments from AGoT (to be fair, you might be able to blame a good deal of that on me as I'm one of the people who did it :)). Best to just finish it all up on your own and return here to see if we can help un-melt your brain.

Sorry folks. Been out of it for a week or so.

Lofwyr, you are right and I should better check those.

I look forward to my big screen debut and hope it doesn't go straight to DVD.

GRRM is Writing Episode 8 any guesses as to what happens in that episode? Eddard's farewell?

Well he's tentatively titled it The Pointy End, so Arya's escape from the Red Keep, maybe? And, thusly, the beginning of the end for Ned...

It's a bit late for Ned's farewell isn't it?

If it's a 10 ep season, then in the next two episodes they have to deal with all the repercussions, the two battles (I'd like to think they'll show a full-scale battle of the Whispering wood given it's for TV and not just from Cat's POV), Robb's crowning etc.

If I was shooting it, I'd leave the battle off-screen. Saves money to begin with, and I think it creates tension and drama. Unfortunately they didn't ask me to direct any of the episodes for the first season. Maybe the second, hey? Fingers crossed.

Here's how I see it...

That episode will probably focus heavily on Arya's story. I mean, from the beginning of A Game of Thrones to the point where she's taken by Yoren. Something like that. In other words, I don't see the series as being totally linear like the book. They'll probably show some flashbacks of Jon giving Arya the sword (which is something that should technically happen in a much earlier episode) and then we see Arya's escape where she sticks someone with the pointy end. Just saying, don't expect the series to follow the pages of the book exactly. There will probably be a lot of jumping around and flashbacks so that it's easy to focus on a few characters at a time.

GRRM has said that it's the episode where Tywin is introduced, so it presumably covers Tyrion's arrival at the Lannister camp with the wildlings, his meeting with Tywin and Kevan and the news that the Stark army is advancing down the causeway, followed by Tyrion meeting Shae. That presumably puts it after Ned's arrest.

We may get the two battles in this episode as well and maybe end on Ned's death (as Ned's death has to happen in close proximity to Jaime's capture otherwise it couldn't have happened), or that might be pushed back to the following episode (Ned's fate may be better to have as the ending to Episode 9 with 10 focusing on the aftermath, Robb's acclamation and stuff with Dany).

I'm not sure about the coup and Ned's arrest (plus Arya's escape). The timeline would probably require that to happen in the preceding episode, but we will see.

The first preview has been put out by HBO. It's not very long...

GRRM also has this on his Not A Blog, but I could not enlarge the video... so check it out full screen on the HBO link above.
