Is George Martin Among Us?

Smiling Weirwood - hmm, I suppose there are possibilities. I'm also surprised no one's mentioned the suspiciously well-connected, and thus far absent, Werthead...

Young Stormlord - interesting, but you didn't start either the 'who said that' thread (unless you're also Centurion, a la Ursa-logic) or the 'trivia questions' thread, which was started by...:)

Well for those attending this years WorldCon in Melbourne (my neck of the woods), he appears to have confirmed attendance of the event. Obviously signings etc. are going to be fairly hectic one would assume, whenever he's in town....:)

Sounds like a plan :D

All we need is someone like yourself to attend that Con and let us know when exactly Martin is busiest. At that point, we all post. Logically, whoever's missing...

[I just pictured George Martin rushing off in the middle of the Con to post his alibi...:)]

Oh come on, people. Don't be ridiculous! Imp is obviously not Martin! George wouldn't join forums like that. It would be far too obvious. Here's what I would have done if I was George and wanted to join internet forum which hosts discussions about my novels.

First, I'd take some obscure reference to quite important character as my username. Then I'd make a few posts pretending to be foreigner, with my spell-check on and similarly sounding words as my spelling mistakes (to fit into internet culture nicely ;) ). I might even crack open an atlas and pick some small country as my location. Or take the name from BBC News.

If I were him, I would have started easy; a post on accepted fan theory here, an unobtrusive question there, complete nonsense at far thread etc. I would ask fans to spell words for me, to keep the masquerade going. That's the first step. I'll call it infiltration.

After everybody in community buys my mask, I'll go to phase two. I'd throw a few theories here and there, defend a few ideas without starting new threads. I'll call this step research phase, because I'd collect hints and audience expectations in this step. And maybe check if my audience got all the plots I already wrote

Third step is the hardest. I'd call it inspiration hunting (with research and development thrown in). To start it, I'd have made a thread whose only purpose is to help me find all obscure references in my books and all the potential connections that could be made from them. Then I'd have tried to concoct theories from them and expose them to public by making new threads, to test reactions of my fanbase.

And during all that time, I'd have been polite and keep my eyes open for ideas from my fans, writing good ones in my next book. And they would not suspect a thing.

But that's just what I would have done if I were George RR Martin. But I'm not.

P.S. Sorry for the long rant. I got carried away. Curse my vivid imagination :) !
Nice try Mr. Storm, but we already know Imp for who he really is.

The Imp is definitely shady, and has even taken a nickname of GRRM's favorite character.;)

Yes, and The Smiling Weirwood has been rather quiet...hmmm.

We could do a George Martin test. How about these as items, but I'm sure you guys can do better.

Which actor does the best Henry VIII?

Elizabeth Woodville, naughty or nice?

Left or right?

How do you feel about airline security?

Fanfiction: thumbs up or down?

Healthcare...any opinions?

Offense or defense?

Giants or Cowboys?

No, no. What we need is a polygraph test. You don't think George R. R. Martin would mind taking one, do you? For his fans, you see.

Eulalia - I must be reading more of Martin's not-a-blog than I thought. I think I can answer six of these. The first two have me stumped though.

Of course, if I was GRRM (and I'm starting to think I am) then I wouldn't want to answer these correctly now would I?

I still want the blood samples.:)

Which actor does the best Henry VIII?

Robin Williams. Or he would if only they'd give him a shot.

Elizabeth Woodville, naughty or nice?

Who?

Left or right?

What are those? Sounds like witchcraft to me!

How do you feel about airline security?

I'm cool with it.

Fanfiction: thumbs up or down?

Thumbs up, but only if it's Kirk on Spock Star Trek fan fiction.

Healthcare...any opinions?

Yes.

Offense or defense?

What an indefensible question! I take offense!

Giants or Cowboys?

Superbowl Champion New Orleans Saints, thanks. (How'd those Cowboys do, Urse?)

Aoratos – polygraphs can be fooled. Let’s face it folks, there’s only one way to be sure. I can see the headlines now:

'Best-selling American author George Martin was declared missing yesterday, after being waylaid by what witnesses described as "an assemblage of rabid individuals". Authorities have since been contacted by the group, calling themselves the GRRM Fan Club who have, bizarrely, made no ransom demands, only insisting that they "want the truth" and that this "will in no way delay the forthcoming completion of the long-awaited A Dance With Dragons, the fifth book in the popular Song of Ice and Fire series, which we all highly recommend".

"George is very comfortable and currently writing for the book as we speak", finished the kidnappers' spokesman. They are suspected to be the same individuals involved in the frequent and bloody gang-warfare against the so-called GRRM Owes Us brigade, which is spreading world-wide and is now threatening national security.'

Robin Williams might be good in "Henry VIII, Courtiers in Tights." :)

Culhwch is definitively not George Martin because C. is cool with airline security. Gosh, sorry about offending you C.!

Ursa can't be George Martin, because, I can't see GRRM posting a Cowboys logo, for any reason.

No One has dodged some questions! Hmmm.

It would be funny to make up a GRRM test and see if he passes it! (But only after ADWD is published on July 1st)

Jaime or Rand?

While I'm not too happy about that Cowboy's logo either (shame on you Ursa), I must insist that I dodged nothing!

You yourself have identified the possible humour to be deriven from testing GRRM, thereby implying that even he might err in hindsight. Thusly, however the answers should come, they are still to be questioned. For instance, I happen to recall Jaime's victory over Rand (at least I think so), and yet....no, I am not miraculously transmogrified into GRRM.

Elementary, my dear Eulalia.:D

Yes, good point No One, yes I do believe, in hindsight, and as depicted in the best author generated story, that Jaime did defeat Rand!

I do wonder if George would pass the George Martin test. Needs a little work.

I think GRRM would say "WTF?" or give have a complicated response, but not ask "Who?", if asked about Elizabeth Woodville. ;) I think it possible that Cersei or Catelyn or both are a little bit Woodville. I'd be so crushed if he didn't know!

Ah yes, Elizabeth Woodville, War of the Roses - it's all coming back to me now...(okay so I googled her name, all right?!).

I know I read somewhere that the War of the Roses was a big inspiration for ASOIAF, so Martin must know. Probably.

I'll have to get round to reading a bit about that whole thing. Sounds intriguing.

Didn't GRRM take the cool bits from the Wars of the Roses and slice dice and stir?I think he has probably caught the essence of the time period, and the facts would have gotten in his way.

Still, Elizabeth Woodville is kind of the "Babe of the Roses", and Margaret of Anjou is like the Cersei of the Roses. Elizabeth of York is more like Sansa. I don't think Tyrion is much like Richard the Third--but he was supposed to be a hunchback. There were two missing princes and a couple of imposters. Some of the top nobles got executed or mysteriously eliminated. I don't recall any dragons. However, there was always a threat from the far north, although Hadrian's wall is hardly imposing or made of ice.:)

although Hadrian's wall is hardly imposing

Not so much now, maybe - but for a Pict that had never seen anything bigger than a centre-post hut, it must have been alarming enough in its time...

I'm not sure how much GRRM has mentioned the point, but a few others could probably confirm his use of that period as a foundation. I also read (I think on a Wiki page) that something called the Black Bull Dinner (?) was the inspiration for the Red Wedding. As I recall, it happened in Scotland with a prominent clan being invited to dinner, only to be presented with the head of a black bull half-way through the meal (that apparently being a symbol of death among Scottish clans). They were given a mock trial and hanged in the courtyard.

I'm finding that when I read anything historical now I tend to see the archetypes for one or more ASOIAF characters. Obviously, Tom Holland's Persian Fire wasn't an influence (published in 2005), but his depiction of Cleomenes, one of the two Spartan kings who preceded Leonidas, reminded me a lot of Stannis - i.e: overly severe, but not without a sense of justice.

Pyan, nice pic! Of course, you are right that Hadrian's wall was an impressive achievement. Probably awed more than a few of my ancestors over the course of centuries!

I suppose, (doh!)I was mentally comparing Hadrian's Wall to GRRM's Wall, and, well, one is real! (real man hours, engineering, blood, sweat and tears)The other one was never constrained by the laws of physics or time, has a little magic built in and keeps out Undead. (And took lots of man hours and writer's sweat.)

I do like how GRRM takes juicy tidbits from history and gives them a big twist.

That would be an interesting question No One. Was he inspired specifically by the Black Dinner? It seems like a good point. There is even a head, though it is not on a platter and it is wolf, not bull. We can add it to the George Martin test.

GRRM seems to know his archetypes. He even has "the Seven" as a pantheon.
