Discussing the Writing Challenges -- November and December 2010

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Yay, I got an honourable mention :)
You thoroughly deserved it. I laughed out loud at the last line and took the liberty of mentioning its humour to a couple of people I know.

Though tainted by iffy punctuation :( still that can be remedied.
It was the last line that caught my eye. (But only when I was looking through all the stories for voting purposes; I didn't notice the punctuation when I first read it: too busy laughing. That's probably why you didn't see the problems.)
‘Hmmm’ ponders Johan ‘Can a caterpillar tap-dance?’
A missing comma after "Hmmm" and a missing full stop after "Johan".

(And that line still makes me smile. :):) )

Slightly less than two and a half hours to go and we're standing at 35 votes.

For those of you who are still hopelessly undecided yet, it's time to start flipping those coins.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Sheesh, this gets worse.

Short shortlist was Talysia, mgir, Teresa and Culhwch, with ColdBurn only failing to make the cut by a whisker (mainly because I wasn't sure I knew what it was about...), but after long thought I went with Talysia because I love the image of the phoenix and all it stands for.

Thanks for the mentions and the vote. And well done everyone.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

I voted some time back. My system is cumbersome and slow, but works. And it means that, if ever the decision is made to have two votes per person, I'll be ready (and where will the bubble searchers be then?)

And I have been trying to persuade 'outsiders' to vote.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Well, I cast my vote. In order of preference, from last to first:

3rd place: Lenny - A cat!!! I LOVE cats, and the idea of a surfing cat protecting us from Evil Internet People is brilliant. And he's distracted by food, at the end... HEH! So cat-like.

2nd place: Hoopy - Fantastically chilling tale, with implied bad ending (woop, as you would say). I love it! The second-last line switch to present tense jarred me when I got to the final line and it was back to past tense, though, so that is the only thing that makes it lose the top spot, for me.

1st place: Mosaix - Cleverly done and believable. I love the shocking switch of power.

Well done to all three!

My highly commended goes to Talysia, Mygoditsraining, Wybren, and Crystal Haven.

CONGRATULATIONS TO HAREBRAIN, OUR GLORIOUS WINNER

And Congratulations to Everyone Else for making the voting so hard.

Although I must say that I am disappointed there were only 37 votes.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Harebrain, great work. That was an ending I never saw coming.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Don't forget, my fellow writing challengers, that if you are itching for another vote, there's one to be had over in the monthly Photo Challenge thread! Voting is still open there for a couple of days yet, so go have a gander and vote for whichever pic is your pick!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

I'm starting to wonder if this will spin off a non-photo monthly art challenge as well.....? :p

Maybe not, hehe. I firmly believe Wybren would win that one every month. :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Congrats HareBrain, I didn't write a winner but at least I picked one! :)

Thanks to Ursa for the mention (and everybody I haven't already thanked) I'll be sure to enter next month

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Congratulations on the win, HareBrain!:)

And thanks to The Judge for the vote - that was a nice surprise. Thanks to Wy, StormFeather and Crystal Haven for the honourable mentions, too.:)

Well done everyone!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Big grats, HareBrain! :D

Can't wait for the next one!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

I'm actually wondering who voted for mine-nobody ever said anything and it was an unexpected late vote.....so whoever it was, thanks for the vote. :)

I'm still awaiting to see what HareBrain dishes out to us. Maybe it'll have to involve treasure-seeking monkey pirates? :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Thanks for the congrats everyone, and to those who voted for me. I'm a bit perplexed as to why there were fewer votes than stories written. I know the standard was so high that many people had a hard time choosing, but even so, voting must be easier than actually writing one, surely?

I'll do my best in the next couple of days to come up with a theme as good as those we've had so far.

But I also have other things to think about. This win has shown me what I now have to do with my life: give up work, abandon my current WIP, and expand Gregor's story into a series of seven novels, each one more ironic than the last ...

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Ah-not for some of these guys, HB. I never have a decision of more than two to choose from by the time voting rolls around, but as others have said, they've had "short" lists eleven entries long or more.

Each story is a good one, but there are always ones that stand out to me more than others for some reason or other, and those are the ones I consider.

This month had me down to The Hunt by BookStop because of its mythological background, and Teddy by Hoopy because of its personal nostalgia to me. In the end, I went for Teddy.

And usually I have trouble making decisions, but when it comes the field I love, I am usually able to stack right up quickly like a continental soldier at supper time.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Congratulations, HareBrain! A great story! :)

I don't know who it was that voted for me, but thank you. And a thank you for all the mentions too.
