Discussing the Writing Challenges -- November and December 2010

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

I have this problem with the challenge in that the first thing which comes to mind generally isn't SF or Fantasy, nor can I adapt it. Each time I've had to sit down and think 'inside the box' and not been exactly happy with the result. For me the 75 word limit makes each post like a spark, briefly illuminating the thought process of the writer.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

((btw HB if you get sick of puzzling what its about I am perfectly willing to let you in on it...such as it is...))

Not sure ... in my experience, intriguing enigmas are often better left that way. Not that I'm afraid it would be "junior members of a Kipling fan-club dress up in Kaa costumes and strangle people to prove elegibility to attend the AGM" or anything ...

Thanks for the vote!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

This was a good month for entries, I felt. This is a wondrously fun challenge, and I'm awaiting-rather impatiently, I might add :D-for the next one to roll around. Still, good things....

And I do actually hope that whoever wins chooses the next round to be SF/F only as well. :D Gives it a nice twist. :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

The voting is different this time ... at least as of now. Before, there were a few stories that went out ahead at the beginning as clear favorites, and they stayed that way.

This time, the votes are spread out more. While we have one leader, second place is really crowded.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

At the time of this post there was still only one leader with 3 votes and a few with 2 votes. With this low a number and only 16 votes cast, absolutely anyone is still in the running.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Two votes! My goodness......Thank you.

I had the same effect as Mosaix, it seems.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Read through the entries tonight, with a view to making a shortlist. Realised that I was writing down nearly every name . .

It was a really tough choice, but in the end I had to make a snap decision, and it went to HareBrain.

Mouse, you were very close again, as was Taly, Leisha, Mosaix, Boneman, The Judge, Ursa, OneBigPotato, Lenny, Teresa, Crystal Haven, Chrispy, Nixie, Hoopy . . . .

In fact, I would struggle to say I didn't enjoy any of them

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

So, so many great stories this month! My "short list" was 14 this time, and my "shorter list" kept six.

Interesting how many insect stories we had with this theme, and how many made my list!

mygoditsraining--"Murdered every night but one"

J Riff--"Dark Tower"

The Judge--"What Price Thy Virginity Now?"

HoopyFrood--"Teddy"

TheEndIsNigh--"Pest Control"

HareBrain--"Big City, Bright Light"

And numerous others--great job, everyone! I can't wait for the next one to start....

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Well, I have found it so difficult to choose. I enjoyed reading all of the stories, but after a lot of thought, and wishing I had more than just one vote, these are the entries on my shortlist. Thank you to all who mentioned my story. And good luck everyone :).

To Rise Again - Talysia
Murdered every night but one - mygoditsraining
Transfer of Power - mosaix
What Price Thy Virginity Now? - The Judge
Big City, Bright Light - HareBrain
How to Make an Earth - Hilarious Joke

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

D'you know this is even more the case with art. So we will call my piece art, shall we? Meaning is, after all, in the brain of the beholder! ;)

Are we allowed to suggest that this may mean that the art of writing is going to ... er ... pot?:)

(Even though my eyes didn't glaze over.)

* Expects to be fired. ;):) *

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Everybody giving short lists. Perhaps I ought to put up my spread sheet, with forty two rows and columns with labels like 'writing style', 'sticks to the guidelines', 'grammar mistakes', 'cleverness' and finally 'overall pleasure in reading'. All different numerical maxima, and, even out of a hundred, I'm using decimal points.

What? That's not how it's supposed to be done?

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

That's perfectly valid...

...if you can do it in 75 words or less. ;)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Chris,

If you'd post the behemoth spread sheet, I might just use it.:D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

I can see the theme for the next challenge, should Chris win:

Write a story inspired by the chosen theme, in 75 words or less
There should be a witty, clever story, packed with express and implied description
The title may be up to 75 words but is not part of the word count -- or the story
One entry per person
Prose or poetry

Story may be science fiction or fantasy

Voters must submit a completed spreadsheet indicating the points earned by each story in decimal, hexadecimal and binary notations, for all twenty ratings criteria. You may only vote once.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

And in the process of making these abstruse and cabalistic calculations, let us not forget that the voting period is short this time, and ends at 1 minute before midnight GMT on Monday, June 28 -- not on the last day of the month.

With one contestant so far ahead at the moment, it doesn't look like we're going to need those two days for a tie-breaker poll, but there are still enough votes yet to be cast that someone could collect enough last minute votes to catch up or go ahead.

So stop casting the bones, cease scanning the heavens for portents, seek no longer for omens in the flight of birds, and vote!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Very poetic there at the end, TE. :D I've always voted early throughout this and have never had any regrets about my decisions. :)

And to get it out of the way, I actually voted for Hoopy's story, Teddy, due to sheer nostalgia on my part. Reminded me of a story I read as a kid, it did, and it was a nice little memory to have. :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

i haz voted. wasn't easy. and made less so by terrible hayfever - the stories may only be 75 words long, but I'm sneezing uncontrollably every 60 words....

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- June & July

Make sure you note the number of sneezes per story in your spreadsheet.
