re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

I thought, after some of you posted second stories, that I would write more than one and see which one I liked most. But that was a mistake, now I'm torn between which one to put up. I've got 4!

The thing is three of them are the same idea written in different ways and one of them is a seperate idea. I think the single idea is better, but I don't think I've written it well as a story, and so I'm leaning towards the three, but which one of the three to free?

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Sorry for the double post

Now I'm upto 6! Dagnammit!

I'm going to try and do as the Judge did and see what my other half thinks is best, she'll probably get it wrong, but at least I'll have a second opinion (to ignore)

Yay! I'm not the only one who's referred to sex this month! Was worried I'd lowered the tone. :D And, double yay, as I reckon I (possibly maybe) understand more of the entries this month than I did last! Although, that means voting will be harder this time.

So far I really like Karn's, Chris's, Bookstop's and The Judge's. :)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Despite the spousal "er...er...um"ing I've posted my first idea -- mainly because I haven't got the merest sniff of another one. And as BookStop had kindly got people in the mood for Classical myth, I thought I might as well take advantage of it.

I don't suppose it passes the Mouse test, as proposed by Chris. But in a shameless attempt to garner her vote again I shall be providing links to Wiki nearer to the time of voting, so anyone who finds it more than usually incomprehensible -- Don't Panic. In the meantime, I'm following in Parsonical footsteps by providing a hidden message, well, more of a clue. And for those who feel the need for it, there's a hint of social commentary as well. And all inside 55 words.

PS I have passed the Mouse test!!

Judge, I now feel like an actual genius after you saying that!! I get it! I get it! I see the hidden thingy too! :D :D

I'm still making my initial investigations, TJ, but I can see that your story is not about the Lorelei.

* Expects Reith Lecture in response. *

Do you have a pun factory going full-time, Ursa?? Three in one post!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Oh my goodness, Judge!!

Earlier today, I was thinking about transformations, and I was toying with Greek mythology stuff, specifically women turning into trees when being pursued by lusty gods. I even started planning a story around it (although mine was going to be a lot more...informal!)

Anyway, changed my mind. But that was a shocker, reading through yours! (In fact, I'm going to have to go back, I was mostly skimming in my surprise).

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

I'm glad I didn't spike your guns, then, Hoopy. One of my reasons for posting now is I thought someone else might come up with it before me if I didn't hurry, especially as BookStop had planted the idea of myth in people's minds. (As it happens I'd also toyed with Diana and Acteon, so I'm glad I dropped that idea earlier. It happened to me last month, though, as I'd planned a fleeing-from-the-wedding one, and then DA went and posted his!)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Speaking of hidden meanings, TJ's story made me think of two otherwise unrelated things:
  1. Prunus laurocerasus (one of whose common names is doubly appropriate here, though one of the "meanings" may not be particularly welcome on a family site);
  2. the first human spaceflight mission to leave** Earth orbit.
(I hope this doesn't make The Procrastinator shudder even more.)

EDIT: And now Hoopy is channelling Thread Bear!;)

** - No pun intended (at least wrt this word).

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Yes, I also thought about Artemis and the stag thing, too! Those Greeks are just full of transformations. I was thinking about my copy of Ovid, which is just one long transformation, really.

Anyway, went with something different in the end.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Jinkies! After reading the Judge's, I don't know which pop culture reference to make. Should it be Velma, or the far more obscure Celeste?

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

I recognized the myth straight away -- Pandora worked so well for Seph last month, I gave some thought to Classic mythology, and a passing thought to that particular myth. But no story ideas jumped out at me. Just as well, since you handled it much better than I would have, Judge.

Now to go look for the hidden message ...

Edit -- Oh.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Velma? Celeste?

The plain one on Scooby Doo, or Babar the Elephant's wife...

mgir: You watch way too many cartoons!!

Thanks, Teresa. You've already got the hidden message...

PS Have just realised the "Thanks" might have come across as a bit sarcastic, as if you'd given the game away! Sorry about that -- it wasn't meant in that way. "Thank you for the compliment, Teresa. And by the way, you've already got the hidden message..." is what it should have said. (As I've said before, I'm better at editing than the initial writing, I'm afraid.)

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

My list of contenders shall continue to grow, it seems. For some strange reason, Hoopy's story reminds me of one I had read by a YA short-story collection author as a kid. Hoopy's was much happier, though.

So my list is now this:

Naughty - Mouse
The Garden - Nixie
The Hunt - BookStop
Teddy - HoopyFrood

And is it ever going to be hard to choose. I think the last two have more a chance now than the first two, since Book went along with a mythology theme (I know I said Greek, but use of the name Diana marks it as Roman. No matter-it's about the same anyway), and Hoopy's story due to reasons listed above.
