"Doh", slaps forehead. "I get it now."

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

As far as my entry this month goes, there's a lot of backstory to it that I was unable to put in due to the word limit. But apparently I was able to add enough for it to be a notch above my last two, hehe. :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Wow, 21 stories so far and not a one that I wouldn't vote for! The bar is not just being raised, it's taking flight!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Actually, we have 22 stories as of now. In April and May, almost all of the stories came in during the first ten days of the Challenge. I think we'll have a pretty good idea by the end of next week whether we're going to come close to the same number of stories this month, but right now there is no way of telling how long the initial burst of enthusiasm will last.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Oh man, this one was a challenge! I decided to just write it normally and then cull. Bad idea! So much culling...I could probably cobble another 4 stories together from the words that I discarded.

HareBrain! Trust you to bring us back to underwear. Kafka will be turning in his grave.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Digs, yours blew me away, I thought it was brilliant.

Some other very good ones this month too: Teresa's and the Judge's in particular so far, and Ursa's was a masterclass in how to set up a pun (or several). I haven't quite got Procrastinator's yet (I can be appallingly dense) but something about it makes me want to read it again and again until I do, which is a good sign.

It always amazes me how people can produce excellent emotional, serious pieces in 75 words. I just can't do serious in so short a piece.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

After reading HB's story, TJ, it took me a few moments to forget Kafka and recall that urban legend (if it even reached that level) about cockroaches and nuclear war.

(And wasn't the last word a punning reference to looters? ;))

If it makes me seem more intelligent, then yes.

Or, actually, NO! I've had trouble before with people seeing puns that don't exist in my last line.

Well, I hope more people remember it, because otherwise my story won't make any obvious sense and people will start crediting it with "hidden meanings".

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

I'm not sure the creation of puns makes one appear more intelligent. (It hasn't worked for me.)

If you did want to do that** you could have ended with "Pants!" and so have hinted at a major difference between the respiratory systems of insects and mammals. (You could have even given the story the title: I Believe in Spiracles.)

** - Don't worry, you don't need to.

Heh. Knickers. :D

It made total sense to me, and I'm an idiot! I think that piece of trivia is common enough that most people will know it.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

When I read HareBrain's story, I started to giggle uncontrollably. Of course it was 3 in the morning, and I was light-headed anyway.

The story really is funny by itself, but the reference to last month's story definitely gave it an extra something.

It started me thinking if it would be possible for someone to write a great continuing saga in 75 word portions as the months went by. Certainly it would be very difficult, considering that the themes change and each story would have to stand complete all on its own.

It could be done, but I don't think I would have the courage to tackle it.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

Gosh, thank you both. This could be the pinnacle of my writing career!

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- April, May, & June

I'm a fan of Digs' piece, though there are several others in my running now as well.

These competitions, so far, have had me feeling ironically as though I come up short...

It's a challenge for sure for me... I've always been long-winded.

Hmmmm....
