re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Not really, Mouse. Characters are my only strong point in writing. :p

I felt that it simply didn't have the depth or the conflict that First Failure or Having You For Dinner had....

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Can we start slapping Karn whenever he puts himself down now? :D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

No, because then both my face and the slapper's hand would soon be red and bloodied. :p

As Pyan said once a while back, with one of my earliest postings in Critiques-I have the skill down, but not the art.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

A special prize goes to Mouse and Death by Mouse for inventiveness and daring. Also Honourable Mentions to Deathfrommassive for Delmore Schwartz and TheDustyZebra for The Measure of a Man -- I loved both of them and they would have been in my top five, except to me they didn't come within the SFF genre. Apologies, both, if it's my stupidity which has missed something obvious there.

Aww, thanks anyway! I really thought that the idea of someone capturing all the time in the world and then reapportioning it according to his own notions of worth was an SFF concept, but to each his own. That's why we all buy different books! :) (And the fault could well be mine for not managing to convey the concept properly--it certainly didn't seem as good a story after I read the rest.)

I'm listening to your protests... I'm ignoring your protests...

*slaps Karn*

As Aristotle demanded, Karn, plot is everything.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Then you ought to change that cloak of character, as without substance, it won't command attention from an audience interested in story.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Loaded, we don't critique the stories in the Writing Challenge. Why? Because people do not post them here with the intention of getting critiques, so it would be unfair to press our advice on them. Honest praise, of course, is always acceptable. But when somebody wants a critique of their writing or advice on how they might have written it better, they take it to the Critiques forum.

There is a reason why the Challenges and the threads discussing them have been located in the Workshop instead.

Mouse, I wanted you to know that you have my son's vote. Unfortunately, he's not allowed to vote, but there you have it.

He was watching as I ran through the stories again, and stopped me with "who put those capital O's there?" As I scrolled back, he said, "Oh, it's a mouse! I'd vote for that one!" :D

By the way, I did actually forget to include your story in my short-short list; I guess I was trying to make it shorter, because it was really seven.

Noted and understood, my liege.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Not sure if it would be wise to refer to TE as "liege"....:D

But seriously, these challenges are always fun, and they're creativity at their best. Improv, I say, improv! Whose Line Is It Anyway, author's style!

Maybe I should get a bugle or a minotaur horn to start blowing in when time comes to vote....:D

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Judge, a special prize? Yay! Is it cake?
What else? A mouse-shaped cake with milk-chocolate ganache, I think.

Aww, thanks anyway! I really thought that the idea of someone capturing all the time in the world and then reapportioning it according to his own notions of worth was an SFF concept, but to each his own.
Eek! I didn't read it literally! I thought it was metaphorical!! Blooming heck. None of this is helping. And I've only got a few hours left...

Aw, cheers, dude! That just made me grin. :D

TJ! Yayness!! That sounds like the best cake ever.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

Surely a mouse would eat a cheese-like cake or (seeing that not all mice would recognise cheese except by the smell) a banana and peanut butter cake (standard bait for small herbivorous mammals, for some reason). The only incidences of cannibalism I've heard of in mice is mothers with newborn young in crowded conditions.

They're not moles, after all.

re: Discussing the Writing Challenges -- August & September

I hope the cake is only mouse-shaped and not mouse-flavoured! Eek!
