The trouble is, the phrase that I suspect TEIN would probably like to use sounds even less family-friendly (in a US** context), though it's entirely innocent.

** - According to Wiktionary, the word at the heart of the phrase I'm thinking of has a slang meaning in the US, though I can't recall a time when it didn't also have this meaning over here. (And I'm old enough to be a grandparent, even though I'm not.)

I'm not sure what you guys are talking about, but keep it clean!

There are grandmothers present.

The new stories are all very good. So long as we don't all below the mystic 42 I won't worry. Another month like January is really too much to expect.

Well there are ten reasonably solid contenders (alchemist,Chel,Culhwch, Hilarious Joke, HoopyFrood, Karn Maeshalanadae, Mag the Mighty, Moonbat, R M Tobias & The Judge) and it's already thirty three entries, so the answer to life, the universe and everything seems within reasonable hope, if not yet attained.

Can you imagine the voting if everyone who had ever submitted an entry decided this was the subject for them? 130+ pieces to read?

I can imagine the calls for more votes.

(Calls which should be ignored.)

I've been busy trying to get something finished, which is my excuse for not filing yet. But since it's all done now, I shall be pondering The Song anew. I've had the germ of a couple of ideas, but that's it.

Wow, I've been called a 'reasonably solid contender' that's nice, I think, you're not calling me fat are you? ;) hmm, what is an unreasonably solid contender? A gaseous contender, now you're saying I smell!?! :( ;) :)

I have posted, I ended up with 4 stories, but I'm confident that my last (and posted) one is the best. I'm quite happy with it and might even extend it into a full length horror story along the lines of the film 'the eye' but more like 'the ear' :)

I liked it MB. It was a nice twist on the theme with a provocative and sad ending.

Ahhhhhhhhhh! Another two absolutely superb entries from MB and Hoops. I'm trying not to think too far ahead this month, but how I'm going to choose something I don't have a clue.

hoopy's reminds me of a short story I read once where everyone or almost everyone on Earth had a device called a "godPod", a little device which constantly streamed advice and encouragement to people throughout their daily routines. So reliant were people on this stream of encouragement and praise that almost everyone was to the point of even sleeping with them.

Turns out it was alien technology and one day everyone with one on was teleported to another place and I think eaten by the originating race.

Talk about a rapture...

Some folk will swallow anything.

And the humans in the story were pretty gullible.

Stormfeather - Once again another excellent tale, almost metaphorical, it seemed to be a fantasy but the last two word turns it all on it's head. Top notch.

Thank you so much PM - I think it's one of the worst I've posted, but you've made me very happy with your words!

And both you and Hoopy's story have reminded me of a story - YA I think, although possibly a soft-ish horror(??), that I read many years ago about dolls for the girls, and watches for the boys, which had black bits on the hour hands and in the eyes - toys which were heavily marketed with the intention that the majority of the population would own one or the other. At an appointed time, the black stuff would activate and take over the mind of the child, with pretty bad consequences for any non-affected people around them.

I can't remember what happened, but as a complete aside to this thread - does it ring any bells?

Back on track - it's a stonking month so far, and I'm kind of hoping that not eveyone else who's a regular takes part - it's a tough enough decision as it is:D:p:D

Reminiscent of The Creature From Cleveland Depths by Fritz Lieber 1962, which predicted cellphones/net rather spookily.

Made me laugh Karn - as the parent of two kids of 5 and 3, I'm word-perfect on so many episodes of certain programs (Peppa Pig, Humpf, and Ben and Holly's Little Kingdom especially), and their theme tunes, I can so relate to this!!!
