Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

We don't actually critique the pieces in the Challenge. The discussion is limited to positive comments and to speculation about what a story means. We figure that if someone wants a critique, they'll go over to the Critiques section and ask for it there.

So if you like something and want to say why, don't worry about how long you've been here. People never mind receiving compliments!

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Alchemist - This was an epic in its own right managing to squeeze character, plot and a grim twist right at the end. Not only did it work well, it could work as something longer too!

Thanks for the review as always, PM. Maybe I will enlarge it someday. I was quite happy when I wrote it and sat on it for 8 days, even the little in-joke (which nobody may have noticed). In retrospect, I noticed my last three stories, in all competitions, were similar in mood and style. I seem to have settled into a groove I'm not particularly comfortable in. So, next time, I'll have to spend extra effort on breaking out to a different style.

At first glance, and without having read all yet, mosaix, Teresa and Sapheron stand out for me, with Anne Martin deserving a slower, 2nd read, and Templar doing a good job of bringing back pleasant memories.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Thanks for the mention, Alchemist. And thanks for another thoughtful review, PM in this thread and the 75 worder.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

My pleasure Mosaix, I could not very well not do it after that thread that someone started....

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Well.... we could always make the winner of the challenge do it for the following month.... no good deed goes unpunished, you know...:)

(But I know, certainly in my own case, that I couldn't do it anywhere as near as good as PM.... I do hope he does it at work, so it's not his own precious time he's spending, making us feel good...)

At work???? How could you even suggest such a thing.... okay I might have been rumbled. (But it is quiet at the moment, don't know what will happen when we suddenly go busy again....)

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

So... thought i had my idea down. I was 200 deep and happy with it when suddenly the opening line of another idea popped into my head. Another 200 words later and I'm much happier with this new idea(which I'm afraid will not do much to improve Perp's opinion on the state of my mental/emotional health ). Only not sure how I can get across what I need to AND be subtle and tactful with only 100 words to spare... humn... I better go check the closing date again!

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Mine "clocks" at exactly 300 words. I don't know if this is the proper way to ask this, but is there some sort of procedure to ask a moderator if the content is appropriate for the forums or not? I don't think that it will get denied because the content is "adult only", but there's a part with a certain religious allure that might be off limits. It just blends in the poem, so I'm hesitant about cutting it.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

C, sent it to one of us and we will give it the once over, we may ask for a second opinion from the other mods but that's no problem.

Do I detect splutterin' from PM's direction?

Or is it coughin'....

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Well... despite my doubts and a couple rough stretches I've managed to finish my 300 word tale. I rather like it. Still, I think ill sit on it for a day or two before I post...

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Quick question on word counts.

If I was to say "Specimen 2-A," how many words would 2-A be considered?

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

I think we'd let that pass as one word, Arkose, since presumably that's how it's written down on the specimen label.

Re: DISCUSSION, 300 Word Challenge, April

Well, after being "this" close to conceeding that I wouldn't be entering a story (time has been short and idea after idea has been rejected) I figured I'd just run with it.

It's not exactly all I wanted it to be and I'll be the first to say that it's more descriptive than story, but there you have it.
