Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

On the page before this one I have provided a link that describes the genre in detail.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Yes I saw that, sorry for not reading.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Ohhhhhhh I can't believe I forgot about Steampunk, Gaslight Romantica, Dieselpunk, Cyberpunk, Alternate Earth and Post-Apoc! All great subsets of Urban Fantasy.

Someone refresh my memory but is Gothic-Horror considered a sub-genre of Urban Fantasy or Horror or a Genre all its own?

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

It would depend on the story. Supernatural horror (Gothic or otherwise) in an urban setting would definitely qualify.

Other stories might be more iffy, but it would be up to the voters.

Genre boundaries are never clearly defined (it's easier to identify things that fall squarely in the middle, but the stories on the edges are more difficult) and there will always be stories that have elements of two or more genres.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I've been away for a day and missed the closing of the thread so I just want to congratulate the bear for winning April. Well done, Ursa!

(I didn't even make a shortlist..... sigh!)

Oh, and just in case anybody is interested, the folklore my piece was based on was the belief (Once prevalent around the south and west coast of Britain) that seagulls are the returned souls of drowned fishermen.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I've thought about this new theme over night and have a few ideas, much to my surprise, most are going to be discarded, but it's a good start... but a good theme I think, it's really got us all thinking again...

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Nice theme and genre, Ursa - urban fantasy is one of my favourites.:) I had a few ideas spring to mind right away, but I'm going to let them simmer and see what else I can come with over the Bank Holiday.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Woops, i did say I'd give a little more info on the inspiration of last month's entry.

Nixie, I noticed you used the names William and Nancy. Did you take them from the folk song "Lovely on the Water" or is it a traditional pairing of names in that period?

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Harebrain, that was (your story, not your post above).......surreal!

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Surreal perhaps, but I hope that at its heart is a very real message for our times.

BTW, I think Slack's is an interesting entry, even without any bazookas.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I know it's only been a matter of hours since May's 75 worder was announced, but I think this might very well be the challenge that I really have to prune hard to get inside the limit. It took my muse an hour or so to plant the idea in my head and I absolutely adore it... but the "Urban" is killing me!

*wanders off grumbling about bears being too smart for their own good*

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Well my 1st Idea struck while doing the dishes! Now to try and do it justice. I do think however that I will be a bit smarter about things this go round and hold off on posting for a bit to see what else pops up in the morass that is my twisted mind.

Sadly still nothing Urban Fantasy that relates to Kitties.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

The challenge for me will be hard because the theme has given me many ideas. I would say at least 3 solid ideas are already are formed, the length might be the issue with these three though.

I might just have to put together a kitty protector story. I don't like cats but someone has to protect the little ones.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I've only read Harebrain's so far and it nearly friend my mind...

Have had two ideas so far and like both of them. I'm not intending to rush a post this month, so it'll give me time to play...

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I also have two ideas, but I am doubting very much that I can fit either of them into 75 words.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

Question: if a story has soft sci-fi elements, can it fit the genre? A potential story is fantastical, and urban, and about the bestest of friends, but there isn't magic, ghosts, or even a lycat in sight.

Re: DISCUSSION -- The 75 Word Challenge May 2011

I think, alchemist, it would be up to the voters. Some of us consider SF to be a subset of fantasy anyway ... some would (vigorously) insist otherwise.
