Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

It certainly sounds an appealing idea, nixie.

With a bit of zest, it might work.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Karn -- don't worry! Let's be brutally frank -- how many voters here are going to be such experts of Kipling so as to recognise what is or isn't his style? Write a good story, which we know you can do, and don't get hung up on it.

As for the lemon slices, nixie, one trusts that they are Superior Comestibles? (That's magic.)**

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Er... I've read the Just So Stories, The Jungle Book** and some of his poems. Take it from me, that does not an expert make.

** I preferred the movie :D

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Holiday cancelled. I just wrote a poem.:)

I'm a poet.
And I didn't know it.

My entry is written
I think I'm smitten

Role on the first of June.
But for now, I'll give it a prune.

Seventy five words is so hard.
I'll do my best and play my card.

I did my 75 worder before this. It was fun

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

The scary thing is, you guys all seem to be well read and by far smart enough to know what would be Kipling style from blatantly wouldn't be....

Karn, you would be surprised how much Kipling is ingrained into our consciousness, it's there even if you have not read it. Mimicking his style is going to be hard, but he had so many different styles... that you might find something close to your heart.

I've just had a first attempt at this and found the story part quite straightforward, the sting in the tail of course is getting the style and the story in just 75 words.

I'm sure I can hear Chrispy laughing maniacally somewhere...

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Gee, Thanks Chrispy. I love the way that the 'I'd like it in the style of Rudyard Kipling' is in tiny letters. I was just beginning to think I had a decent couple of ideas on nourishment when I saw that.

Sneaky!

Er... I've read the Just So Stories, The Jungle Book** and some of his poems. Take it from me, that does not an expert make.

Riki Tiki Tavi, the Just So Stories and Jungle book for me - and the kids are currently making me watch The Jungle Book 1&2 almost constantly at the moment. (although I've just got them onto 'How to Train Your Dragon' - a brilliant film that I can thoroughly recommend, and they are begining to love the idea of dragons. They want one each!)

At least we have time to do some research before the challenge opens . . .

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I never realised the you in "I wanna talk like you" would be Rudyard Kipling and that the I could be me.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Before we all get caught up in a fog of sepoys and gymkhanas, I'd just like to put up a couple of my alternative stories for May (Urban Fantasy; remember those days?). This having been my worst month ever, I obviously didn't get across what I wanted, what I wanted to get across wasn't good and/or I picked the wrong story.

Don't feed the troll (story and title inspired by post by Ursa; nothing to do with Ursas of ill-repute)

Sunshinegirl: what you doin tonite Ug?

Ugthemighty: Working. Getting hassle from some goats.

Sunshinegirl: u never told me wot do u do

Ugthemighty: I'm CEO of Under The Bridge Tolling and Revenue.

Sunshinegirl: ooookay. I work in the kitten shelter :)

Ugthemighty: I just adore kittens!

Sunshinegirl: cool. I have one called Fluffy.

Ugthemighty: I had one yesterday with mint sauce. The bones were sublime.

Sunshinegirl: you ****!

Ugthemighty: What? It’s a valid lifestyle choice.

Ugthemighty: Sunshine?

And number two (spot the similarities)...

The emigrant

Kate: bin friends for 2 weeks. know nothing bout you. where u from?

EasternVlad: The countryside.

Kate: you a farmer?

EasternVlad: More of a...hunter-gatherer.

Kate: huh? what you doing tomorrow?

EasternVlad: Lying in. And you?

Kate: appointment at hospital. doc sez got hema-something. too much blood

Kate: Vlad?

Kate: you go for a quick pint? LOL try callaghans on cross street

Kate: Vlad? :)

Kate: hold on. sum1 at door...

Now to three weeks of edumacation.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Look on the bright side, Ursa. At least you have the bear necessities...

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Well , I've had a good study of his work over the last few hours and I think I've come up with an entry...

But am I ok to post yet as it's not June 1st?

Btw anyone interested in Kipling really should see the film The Man Who Would Be King - one of my favourutes of all time starring Connery and Caine. I must get around to reading the novel sometime.
