Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

My short list was Mosaix,The Dusty Zebra and Stormfeather. I really couldn't choose between them. In the end I wrote all three down on separate pieces of paper shut my eyes grabbed one. So Mosaix got my vote.

Thanks, nixie! I'm honored to be in a hat with such company! :)

Thanks also to my mystery voter!

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Perp Man, yet again you have lifted my spirits enourmously with your kind words. I have a child-like anticipation of what you might write about my story each month - in the knowledge that it will be positive, supportive and always gives me a warm glow!

Edit - and thank you for the shortlisting - am skipping my way through the evening tonight!!!

Well... if getting a short listing was enough to make you skip through the evening, goodness knows what you will be doing now I actually voted for it. :D

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Howdy,
I wrote a quick reply then scrolled back to see when last we heard from Chris and when I got back to my message it was gone.
Anyway thanks to Alchemist for the mention and to Perp Man for the kind words.
My vote went to Mosaix, I liked that worm, made his point very well without shouting, my kinda guy.
And Chris?
Bob S.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Chris for the entry (I managed to post a not final version, no idea how, but was idiotic enough to think "Ooof, it's done" and not check it again) or Chrispy for the organ recital ( moved to the lounge)?

If Chrispy for the vote, (short list {?!} Paranoid Marvin, Psychotick, TheEndIsNigh, Pyan. the Judge and Mouse) it had to go to Mosaix.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Firstly, a big thanks to Chrispenycate for being the instigator of a great competition and greater debate this month. I really enjoyed Mosaix's entry, and wished I had two votes, as it fitted so completely and also wore the essence of a fable about it. However, I was also intrigued to see how the challenge could be expanded towards a science fiction horizon and for that my vote goes to Teresa this month. I thought her story was powerful, apt and I loved the use of the language, which was an evocative echo of Kipling's style.

Thanks also to Parson who kindly commented on my entry.

When I first saw your post, I read 'goodness knows what you'd be doing if I actually voted for it' and for a few seconds my brain wandered through a happy meandering of joy at the idea of someone voting for me. I smiled a happy smile, and thought how lovely that would be.

Then my brain kicked in (have been out with friends today enjoying the sunshine and a glass or two of some lovely wine) and I realised what you had actually written!!!!!!

I am dancing and singing my way through the ironing tonight (my glamourous life!) and find that I can't wipe the smile off my face. Totally delighted!!!!:D:D

I am looking forward to some quiet time to vote myself - there are some that are likely candidates, but I haven't made my mind up just yet.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Thanks for the mention Aun, and thanks for the votes Nixie, Bob and Chris.

It's great to get a vote from the person that actually thought up the challenge! :)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Catching up on this thread. I've been tardy, but would like to thank Paranoid Marvin for the mention.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

GAAAH! Of all the times to have a Hard-drive crash! Lost my entry and was offline for a number of days. :(

On the upside I got some house work done and I didn't loose any of my WIP's as I had them backup on a thumb-drive. Sad part is I finally figured out a direction for my entry too. :)

Best part is this little incident helped me convince my wife that its time to let me invest in something newer than my 5 year old netbook. Next month I get an Android Tablet!

Ok maybe not the best for writing but I have wanted one of those toys ever since Honeycomb hit and now I have a "Valid" excuse.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I finally got a chance to make up a shortlist, and it's rather well-populated with excellence, but my vote still went where I thought it would.

Here, then, is the short-list and the shorter list, though I have to say that there may be a few that should be there and aren't, and a few that should be on the shorter list and aren't, in the interest of not having every entry on the shorter list. It was all very 'stonishingly Kipling this month.

alchemist -- Breakfast Elegy
paranoid marvin -- The Hungry General
Bob S. Sr -- We Do What We Can
TEIN -- Best Served Cold
Pyan -- East is East...
Oxman -- How the Pelican Got His Beak
mosaix -- How the Tiger Lost His Crown
Brev -- An Iffy Ballad to Over-nourishment
GreenKidx -- The Dinner Book
crys -- Tommy Rations
Parson -- In Search of Nourishment
Grimbear -- When the World Was New and All
StormFeather -- How Venus Came to Trap the Fly
TJ -- A Song for Solomon
Ursa -- Fast Food's Foreign Foray Fiasco
Mouse -- Somerset Sheeps and Apples
Culhwch -- The Venusian Jungle Book

And after all of that, the vote still goes to *mosaix* for the lost Just So Story. Most excellent!

Personally, I'm just going for the Brought the Most People Into the Challenge Award. Are we there yet?

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

A big thank you for the mentions: my entry was such a straight lift of the poem, I'm surprised and delighted to have received them!

Voting: at first, I thought it would be easy: just ignore any that weren't stories - beginning, middle and end needed. That ruled my entry out, and since there was a double whammy this month, I thought 'it's very hard to have a story in a poem, when you're copying kipling', so I fell back on 'do I like it?' Naturally there wasn't one that I disliked, so that put the mockers on that... In the end, I ran out of reasons for voting or not voting and ended up like this... Very honourable mentions to the following, who should have been on the shortlist, but I had to get ruthless: Nixie, Gary Crompton, Highlander, Oxman, Brev, Chel, Grimbear, Culhwch.

Short list and shorter list.

Harebrain
Perpetual man
Pyan
Mosaix
Crys
Tactical Loco
TheDustyZebra
TheJudge
Mouse

It could have been any of those four, and it was so difficult choosing (Three votes would have been nice...) but in the end I went with Crys. For some reason, and I assume it's his choice of spelling, I heard the voice of his narrator so strongly, and got the most vivid picture of all the challenges. Good work.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Blimey Charlie, I can't believe I'm actually getting short-listed! Thanks, people. And thanks for the votes!

I thought maybe people wouldn't get mine (not 'get' as in understand, tis pretty easy to understand) but I should've known better.

Parson, I'm glad you thought that! I didn't want to just copy Kipling, I wanted to make it still obviously me, so I guess it worked. :D

I'm now off to vote...

*wanders back*

Voted for Chel. Because we all know rats rule and cats drool. ;)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Wow! Thanks for the mention Boneman, it is wonderful for someone like me, who really only began trying to write this year, to be so praised. And I got a vote!!!!!

Many stories are truely better than mine, but it feels so good to have people liking your efforts.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Alchemist - Breakfast Elegy
paranoid marvin - The Hungry General
Aun Doorback - From the well of humanity to the pinnacles of heaven
anhalo - Nourishment
mosaix - How The Tiger Lost His Crown
crys - Tommy Rations
Parson - In Search of Nourishment
Stormfeather - How Venus Came to Trap the Fly
The Judge - A Song for Solomon
Mouse - Somerset Sheeps and Apples

In the end I voted for paranoid marvin - it's the one that stuck with me.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Every one who posted made a splendid effort, I know for myself it was a challenge coupling the theme to the style, and in the time I had, it was difficult to do it justice. Anyway well done all, in the end I voted for the one which stood out upon first reading and which I still liked after my final read though - OXMAN

ps. thanks to TDZ for the mention, more than I had expected this month.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Many thanks for the mentions Boneman and PM (I think we're going to have to do something about those there initials, can get a tad confusing, think I should just be Perp or Pep, Perpetual, P-Man or the full blown Perpetual Man - see I'm more than lucky enough to have so many iterations of my name!)

Stormfeather - my pleasure, I really loved the story

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011
