Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Is that a reflection on Kipling or our notions of his writing style/subject matter? ;) :)
That's definitely food for thought.

Unlike the doggerel I'm having to enter this month. Of course, no dogs were harmed in the production of the dish I'm about to place before you: I'm not planning to make a career out of writing verse, you know.:eek::)

(Oh, and in case anyone's suspicious about the word, all-in, there should still only be 75 words in the entry if that is counted as two words. *crosses fingers* )

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I didn't realise the deadline was today. I'm pilfering my neighbour's wireless at the mo (had a psychic moment and guessed their password!) so I have internet for a while.

Should be able to vote anyway! I'm gonna go read them now...

edit: Some really good ones! Particularly liking mosaix's and Chel's.

Ooh , some nice poems to round us off. Ursa , you've out-punned yourself this time , marvellous entry!

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Cutting it very close, Cul! You enjoy living dangerously, don't you?

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I One day I'll come to post with five minutes left and my computer will fail me.

In that case you would use your phone, wouldn't you?

Or might that be so much slower that it would cost you time you didn't have to spare?

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

It would all depend where my story was saved - which is usually on a USB stick, and as a result would require a computer to transfer from one to the other.

Hopefully that situation never comes to pass. I'm usually at work when it comes time to post, and the PCs here are very reliable.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Just had a terrified moment whilst reading through the list of stories on the poll.

*Someone* spelt deceit wrong and made me think that I had somehow managed to misspell my title. I then proceeded to rush to the post of the story with dread in my heart, but, to my great relief, it appears I did not **** up the title :D.

edit: Really, **** gets censored? For the record, it's not the word you think :p

Perhaps you shouldn't have said that. Now we'll all be imagining something far worse.

And I am not the *someone* who misspelled deceit, but I have corrected it.

I bet it's a corker.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Stormfeather – What an absolute cracker from Stormfeather, and I loved the words ‘vomitus spewings’ makes me look forwards to dinner tonight. The last line really made the story, quite a lot squeezed into 75 words, but it does not feel cramped at all.

TJ – I’m tempted to say magnificent, and indeed I shall. It seemed to me to feel soft, a lovely little piece, that came at the nourishment theme from a different angle, but caught it just spot on. Food and drink may well provide sustenance for the body, but sometimes it is the soul that needs feeding. Magnificent.

Ursa – I don’t know whether to groan or cheer. Just what has come to be expected from our resident Bear, witty , intelligent and well constructed. A great look at a foreigners view at local cuisine (at least that’s how I see it) with a smirk worthy last line.

Kingpin – A newcomer attempting this challenge with their first post, very brave indeed. But quite a wonderful little entry as well, certainly pulls up some beautiful imagery, summoning tranquillity with its words of a place that seems caught up in a lazy summers day.

Mouse – Really glad to see that Mouse posted despite her internet probs! And yet another great entry, with some very nice rhyming, localised dialect and a good story running through it all as well. I really loved the imagery some of this invoked, and I felt there was an array of humour running along through it as well.

Cul – And yet another one with a great last line. I really like the ‘retelling’ take on the Jungle Book, with a familiarity overlaid with the strange and alien. Of course the whole denouement is a great pay off, indicating that this might turn out to be a very short Jungle Book after all. I suppose they might still have adopted him...

So there we are, an end of another month, as has been noted so many times perhaps the hardest month to write for yet. I think everyone who posted has risen to the challenge exceptionally well, a round of whatever one is drinking to everyone.

I suppose a tip of the hat should go to Chris for challenging us so well, and hopefully we can have something a little more... relaxing (especially as the 300 worder is just around the corner)

The quality has been exceptional throughout and I was at a loss for who I was going to vote for, but I think I’ve suddenly got a short list. Another read through and a bit of thought...

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

A tough month for voting, some amazing entries. It longer than usual (its a slow work day) to read through and figure out who to vote for.
My shortened short list is

Paranoid Marvin – the hungry general
Christian Nash – Road hog
Anhalo – nourishment
Highlander – a friend
Pyan – east is east
Mosaix – how the tiger lost his crown
Culhwch – the venusian jungle book

I really thought I'd vote for a poem, a brilliant entry by Anhalo (a new entrant?) had me for most the month, but after re-reading and re-reading each and every one I was so very impressed with Mosaix's entry and so he got my vote.
Well done Mosaix, a very clever story with a wonderful selection of leering, hissing, bragging, growling and whispering voices. :)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

This month, I enjoyed stories by, amongst others, psychotick, Perpetual Man, Bob S Sr, TEiN, anhalo, mosaix, crys and Stormfeather.

The shortlist...
Paranoid Marvin
pyan
Mouse

The votegetter, by a whisker, for evoking the most memories of WWI poetry is...

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Are we not having the poll show the voters anymore? I rather liked that ....

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I just decided to go with my original decision. Looking through them, as good as some of the entries were, I still found Pyan's entry to be the one I liked best.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I didn't do a short list. For me, it was always Marvin - he got very close to Kipling's style, I felt.
