Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Are we not having the poll show the voters anymore? I rather liked that ....
Erm... yes... well, we were... but unfortunately a mistake was made** when the poll was set up and we only realised after people started voting. It's not something we can rectify afterwards, so for this month we are back to keeping secrets (if we want to).

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Thanks for the shortlists, and the vote, Karn...:)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

What can I say, py? I liked the style.

Even if I don't care much for far eastern cuisine, haha. Oh, my appetite is my one weakness, I'm afraid. But beyond that, I somehow found some sort of humor in yours that just rang for me.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I didn't do a short list. For me, it was always Marvin - he got very close to Kipling's style, I felt.

I have to agree with this. Reading PMs story early on may have helped, but it was never surpassed in my mind.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I haven't even started building a long list, but I'd be very surprised if Paranoid Marvin's story didn't end up on my shortlist.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Yes, I kept comparing with PM's tale, and in the end, I thought it hadn't been topped - so that's where my vote went. Very good, very succinct, and very Kiplingesque.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I had to 'post-and-run' the other day with my story as I was busy with the kids, and only got to read through the other stories for the first time a day or so later. I'm so glad I didn't read them before I posted - I would never have had the guts to put my offering up against any of the others if I had.

I haven't had time to read them indepth and formulate a shortlist yet, but each and everyone of them has something special.

Perp Man, yet again you have lifted my spirits enourmously with your kind words. I have a child-like anticipation of what you might write about my story each month - in the knowledge that it will be positive, supportive and always gives me a warm glow!

Edit - and thank you for the shortlisting - am skipping my way through the evening tonight!!!

And Thank you also goes to Alchemist who has done me such a surprising service by giving me a mention already - far more than I expected this month, and had me jumping with joy.

Looking forward to sitting down and really enjoying the process of reading all the entries and shortlisting them down to a winner

It hardly needs saying, but I'll say it anyway, everyone who entered should consider themselves a winner this month, it was something completely out from left field and everyone rose to the occasion exceedingly (;)) well.

Writing my comments this month was an extra pleasure, because it really got me to look and see just how well, how much effort everyone had put into this particular challenge.

There is no real place for a short list, as everyone one of you should be on it, I could not judge by tale, technique, or anything like that, I only went to that indefinable something that appealed to me.

Congratulations everyone, winners one and all.

I've got to decide between: Alchemist, Paranoid Marvin, Mosaix, Brev, Parson, Digs, Stormfeather, Ursa, Mouse and Cul

Thanks for the shortlisting, Perp, and the generous review. :):)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Wow.. I can't adequately express how touched I am by the votes and mentions, but I can and will say 'thank you'.

As for my vote, well there have been several times when I've thought this month 'that entry can't be beaten' ; and then it has - or at least has had another twist introduced to the theme or the style.

Am I undecided or do I simply want to give myself another excuse (if excuse were needed) to enjoy reading through them all again?

Well, I'm glad I did something good today then. You're welcome :)

That's last month's performance beaten already. Now I'm jumping for joy. Thanks Perp :)

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Chalk another one up for paranoid marvin... loved his wonderful little barrack-room ballad.

And many thanks for the mention, alchemist. :)

** not me for once

Nope, that was me as well. Thank god I've gotten a couple of short-list mentions in this thread, or all the highlighting of my faults might have shaken my delicate self-esteem...

Many thanks for the mentions, PM and Moonbat!

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I had fun writing mine and it was something that spoke to me personally which is always entertaining.

It was a big decision to vote though! Some really great entries.

My short list was:
Chaoticheart - The imagery was very appealing, especially knowing the story of Ishtar.
Mosaix - I love a good bedtime story! The old fairy tales were the best where things ended more realistically.
Teresa - Loved the theme, wish you could have had more word count to get more detailed!
Chel - Enjoyed it very much, though I think you had it backwards it should be Cat and Rat and the Rat fleeing. (I love my cats!)
Kingpin - I wanted to be floating in a boat daydreaming :)

My vote went to Kingpin, thanks for a pleasant diversion off the shore.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

OK, a hard challenge and no mis-steak.

There were some I just didn't get, probably due to my pathetic lack of things Kiplingesque. Prodidgeous bloke that 'e were.

Here is the shortlist.

Psychotic: a moral for the modern world.
Boneman: A story for us all. If filling had been flinging I wouldn't have been able to resist.
Anhalo: Short and sweet.
Highlander: A description of all true Chrons members existence. Although I never get the Daniels.
Mosaix: The circle of life on a plate.
Mouse: Don't know why, but it rang a chord.

Moonbat: No, but I'll vote for your lament.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

I feel as though I've waded through Kipling's lost verses. I was looking for Nourishment, a Kipling feel (whatever that means) and most importantly a story that struck me.

Short List:

The Spurring Patty "Song of the Hungry. --- A great story of maturity.
Aun Doorbach: "From the Well of Humanity to the Pinnacles of Heaven. --- Kipling as S.F. and well done too.
Pyan: "East is East" --- Originality at it's hungriest.
Mosaix: "How the Tiger Lost His Crown. --- A cracker jack of an ending.
Digs: "A Story for Grown Ups" --- A life is lost and life ends, so sad and so true.
The Judge: "A Story for Solomon" --- Man shall not live by bread alone!
Mouse: "Somerset Sheeps and Apples" --- Kipling meets Walt Whitman, and yet so "Mousey."

But of all the good stories there was one story that was so fine it should be a sermon. Check that, it is a sermon. It was an easy winner.

Moonbat: "Helplessness" There is nothing greater than sacrificing yourself for others.

____

Thanks to Perpetual Man for the mention! It made my day.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Thanks for that Crys, from a fellow 'Barracker' that means a lot.

I'm not one usually for short lists , but this month's competition was such a Challenge , and so spectacularly met by so many that I feel I must.

PM's Requiem for Little Frog - a sad poem beautifully presented

Boneman's If Only - a humorous update on a classic poem . I'm sure Kipling would have approved!

Pyan's East is East... - East meets West in a culinary clash. Very much in the flavour of Kipling's poems about cultures bonding.

Parson's In Search Of Nourishment - a lovely story , and amazing how vivid a picture you created in so few words.

Crys' Tommy Rations - ooh , this almost won. A Barrack Room Ballad if ever I read one , and I'm sure that Kipling would have been delighted to have invite you into his mess-hall. A truly spectacular entry.

Mosaix's How The Tiger Lost His Crown - I'm convinced that this is the 'Just So' story that Kipling never got round to writing.

So despite the fact that I was sure I'd vote for a poem this month, I'm going to vote for Mosaix.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

Many thanks for the vote, PM and the compliment. I seem to have picked up two other anonymous votes as well - more thanks.

Encouraging to see that I'm getting plenty of mentions as well.

Re: DISCUSSION the 75 Word Challenge JUNE 2011

My short list was Mosaix,The Dusty Zebra and Stormfeather. I really couldn't choose between them. In the end I wrote all three down on separate pieces of paper shut my eyes grabbed one. So Mosaix got my vote.
