Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Well, in the race to be the last to post, I'm currently in the lead....

(Why do story ideas have to arrive so late? Has my brain been twinned with Cul's or something?)

From the looks of the last couple of entries, it's because the best is saved for last! Voting just got infinitely harder....

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

The genre test is going to be hard for me. It is hard to determine where SF ends and Fantasy begins. Even some classic SF like Dune, feels a lot more like Fantasy than SF to me. Which is probably why I liked the series much, much, less after the first book or perhaps two. Dune's an absolute classic, but things like "God Emperor of Dune" just didn't ring true for me at all. To say nothing of the trash that followed it.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Science Fiction was the genre for the 75 Word Challenge, Parson. Since the inspiration picture was chosen for its diverse elements, with the idea that everyone could select the elements that inspired them and ignore the rest, interpret the picture literally or use it as a springboard for other ideas, allowing for a variety of interpretations -- the only requirement as to genre is that the story should be some type of speculative fiction.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

UG! Toooo hard to decide right now! I will sift through all the entries again tomorrow when I am rested and vote then. You are all to good at this.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Tardy voting this month!

Brev and Cul for me this time.

They both seem to have 100% of the vote though?

No doubt it'll sort itself out.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

It seems to be that they've each collected a vote from 100% of the voters so far i.e. you.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

My votes go to Hex, TJ and Cul.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! < (repeat for PAGES and PAGES)

I got a vote! I got a VOTE! Mouse, I love you!!!

Ahem, I mean: goodness me, a vote. Jolly good show.

I am deeply in love with several of the stories -- I need to do lots of thinking before I vote and that will mean finding time to concentrate (which is something to do with ribena, I think)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

:D You're welcome. I liked the 'voice' it's written in. And the leg.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Good grief, Hex. Calm down, girl. At this rate you'll go into spontaneous combustion as and when your second vote arrives!

Thanks for the vote, also, Mouse! What excellent taste you have. :D Thanks also to Moonbat, who has voted surreptitiously!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

This month, stories I enjoyed included those by Aun doorback, Chrispenycate, TDZ, Nixie, Brev, Hex, Culhwch and Teresa Edgerton.

Two of the above made it on to the shortlist (I won't say which), but the votes are going to...

slack
Hilarious Joke (it wasn't remotely funny ;))
The Judge

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

It's true, TJ, I would combust if I got a second vote. It would be messy (but possibly pretty too?)

Oooh a mention. Thanks, Alchemist :)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Thanks for the vote, alchemist.

Welcome, aun. Heaven version 10.4 sounds interesting. I might like to visit someday.

My other votes went to digs, and the judge.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Combustion, messy and pretty? I've no idea if it would be a sudden flame and whoosh! (pretty) or some kind of explosion first (messy).

And while we ponder, thanks for the vote, alchemist! Thanks, also, slack!

I don't know how people can vote so quickly -- it takes me ages to think about getting round to it, let alone actually reading everything again several times and agonising at great length. (No ribena involved in that.)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I've enjoyed reading your stories. I find the different conclusions that can be drawn from the same image fascinating.

My favorites were:
The Dreams of a Fool -- Parson
Post-Empire -- digs
Cleansing the Waters -- slack

The city is one of six locations from my comic book: http://crossovercomic.com/index.php?page=extras&base=media/extras&folder=2048x1152dt_fd

In my story the city was built from the remains of a crashed colony ship, and powered by the ship's core, which emits that vertical beam of light at the center of town.

The ship crashed on the night side of a tidally locked planet, and thus the city's inhabitants live in perpetual darkness and everlasting winter.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I agree with TJ, it really takes some time to even begin to come up with a short list. Possibly because not only are the entries that much longer than the 75 worders, but the quality is just so high. There is not one weak story amongst the lot of them (well possibly the first one is a little wonky...)

Although I really did not have the time to do the comment as I did last time, I did miss not doing them and I realised how much it helps me come to a decision when the voting comes around.

That being said I've been through the stories a couple of times, and have managed to narrow the field down a little.

First a few honourable mentions: Allanon, Nixie, Hilarious Joke, SJAB, The Spurring Platty, The Dusty Zebra and Highlander

And a shortlist: Cul, TJ, Thufir, Moonbat, Parson, Mosaix, Starbeast, No-One and Aun Doorback.

Now just have to narrow it down to three...
