And entire corporations that exist to facilitate spammers and help them find ways around anti-spam software.

Yes, Gary, for the 300 Word Challenge there are 3 votes per voter. You have to vote them all at once, though, or you lose the extras.

Not that it makes the voting a whole lot easier.

3 votes will be hard.

So having already admitted I'm as thick as a castle wall. It's official and on the internet for the rest of time, I wonder what do spammers get out of posting a back link on your site.

Shall I start a new thread on this topic?

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I usually find that the third vote is the hardest, because I often have two stories tied for first place and two or three tied for second place.

Shall I start a new thread on this topic?

Why not? Although naturally we won't give away all our spammer detecting ways in an open thread where the black-hearted knaves will see it.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

It's probably a bad idea. I am getting board talking about them.

They seem sad individuals, their aim in life, being, to get a link to a site they are promoting placed on someone else's website.

That's it - I will not mention them again unless Brian creates a hidden spammer forum.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Yes, there are a lot of good writers here. You wish they'd all get a break:)

Publishing seems not to be like that though, as is life.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

True if we could all be magically published though would it really be worth it? Plus imagine shifting through all the chaff for the edible wheat! Somethings in life should be an effort and because of that effort should rightly be rewarded with its merited fruit.

Granted that bit of pomposity said it doesn't make it any easier with the sheer amount of talent you all represent when I try to enter the 75 word challenges each month. Let alone when everyone cranks it up to 11 for the 300 worder!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Hi folks! Well I posted a story for this challenge. All I can say at this point is that great minds think alike :)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

PM and DA, thank you for the comments. I'm really not happy with it but I'm glad you have enjoyed it. I'm not in a great place atm so I'm not really enjoying anything very much at the moment. Thanks again!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Hope that place brightens up, Allanon.

And Gary - why not start a thread in Technology about moderating? You guys could swap tips and tricks there.

And it's a damn good entry, too.

I have to admit, I'm normally not a fan of the rhyming stories*, but this one was really good. I don't why I liked it (I'm startlingly dense when it comes to others' stories; I never understand them) but I know I did.

* No offense to those who are.

Thank you :)

I'm not very confident about writing at all. Especially when compared to all the other stories here that are actually well written!

I'm not a big fan of stories in verse either. I've never gotten down to read Beowulf or the like. But as I was writing this, loads of the lines just ended up rhyming, and there was a very dark theme coming through, so i eventually just went with it. After finishing i very nearly deleted it but decided to post it just to show you guys. Really struggled with the punctuation too. Plus side is that i learnt something new: the dreaded comma splice! Not sure i can defend against them yet, but knowing they are there should help.

Anyways, thanks to chrons for holding these challenges. Really exciting and a great idea. Looking forward to the voting so i can vote on my fave (already got my eye on a couple i really like). Role on the end of the month!

EDIT: And I just spotted a spelling mistake

Are you telling a moderator from another site what to do!

Only joking, but it felt good for a second or two:)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Thufir, I've had a couple of Challenge stories (75-word, not 300) that did that -- they just started rhyming, and eventually I had to go with it. You just never know!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Brrr, TJ. Your story gave me goosebumps. Fantastic.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I only came across the second writing challenge, having been busy this month (one sister getting married another being born XD)... Really kicking myself, it would have been fun!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Thank you, Hex and Greenkidx! As my partner read it and made his usual "I didn't get a word of that but if I admit it, I'm a dead man" face, I wasn't at all sanguine. It's good to know that someone understood what I was trying to do!

PS anhalo, you've still got 10 hours or so...

Ha! I know that face! But luckily, the people here possess more of the proper sort of understanding, so it usually comes to nothing. :D

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Well, in the race to be the last to post, I'm currently in the lead....

(Why do story ideas have to arrive so late? Has my brain been twinned with Cul's or something?)
