Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Hello, Fuzzy! As you can see, your picture has proved a wonderful inspiration for us -- thank you for letting us use it!

Thanks for the shortlisting, PM.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

*sob* that was horribly hard - I've just spent 5 minutes changing my mind and ticking and unticking boxes when I thought I'd already decided...

The stories I really wanted to vote for were those by Aun Doorback, SJAB, Hilarious Joke, Brev, Boneman, HareBrain and The Judge -- see, I wouldn't even have needed all eight of my votes. Hilarious Joke made me cry and Brev/ Aun Doorback made me laugh, The Judge (as mentioned earlier) gave me goosebumps, so did HareBrain (as not mentioned earlier). I loved Boneman's vision of what the picture was - clever and very sad - and SJAB's story made me think of Yevgeny Zamyatin's book We.

I also really liked the stories by Perpetual Man, Mosaix, Parson, Gary Compton and TEIN (and lots of others too but the list starts to get a bit ridiculously long so I will stop now).

In the end, after a lot of faffing and mind-changing, I voted for SJAB, HareBrain and The Judge.

I should have gone with the hat -- it would have been much less painful.

Well after much thought and consulting my inner emptiness to see which of the many wonderful and evocative entries filled it the most I voted.

I voted for (In no particular order) The Judge, Hilarious Joke and Devils' Advocate.

All the other entries where way to good for me to even consider a short list.

Of the three I choose The Judge because I loved the rye humor and the chilling way it was delivered.

Hilarious Joke because it tugged at the heart strings and reminded me of how certain tribal cultures would turn out their elders when they became a burden. It brings the whole euthanasia debate home in a touching manner.

Devil's Advocate for a gripping scifi/fantasy crossover. Especially one that is so very well done.

TJ, did you send him a case of beer for the vote? Or was it a bottle of whiskey? Sheesh, some people will stoop to anything! (Checking my budget now....)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Yeah! a vote!! Thanks Fuzzy Modem it made my day lately I have hardly even gotten mentioned in these contests. And then like frosting on a birthday cake I got short listed by Perpetual Man and mentioned by Hex. Thanks bunches all of you.

It was neither though if anyone ever did feel the need whiskey please I detest beer. However I truly am partial to a nice bottle of Scotch. ;)

You did a great job giving your character a relate-able circumstance and subsequent motivation. I was telling my wife about your story the other day. She really liked the premise too.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Blast! This was hard. I don't think I've ever seen so many original ideas. Every time I thought, "Hm, that ought to be the last truly original take someone else came up with something else.

Short list: Highlander, Rejection slip saver, Chel, Gary Crompton, Hex, TEIN, Moonbat, and Ursa Major.

Voter for: No One, the Dusty Zebra, and Teresa Edgerton all had immensely original takes on the picture.

--------

Fuzzy Modem: I am humbled that you thought enough of my story to share it with your wife. Thanks for the words of encouragement.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Oh wow, thanks for the vote, Parson, and the other vote I just found upon going to look at that one, Karn, and the kind mentions, alchemist and PM!

I think I have two of my votes nailed down, but that third is going to be a bear ... err, that is, well ... if I knew that, I guess I would have #3 nailed down as well! It might be a bear, and it might be somebody else, and it's going to take some more time. :D

My budget only allows for rye bread, I'm afraid (very nice with toasted cheese, however), though perhaps spelt bread might have been more appropriate... :p :D

And thanks for the votes Hex and MstrTal!

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

I didn't know there was bread on offer -- blast. I wouldn't have voted so soon.

A cautionary tale about voting too early: I dreamed Teresa's story all last night.

Parson -- thank you so much for the short-listing. To agree with Fuzzy: I really liked your story - I thought the end was brilliant, and I didn't see it coming at all.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

But will it stop at the odd slice of bread? Will a time come when some voters expect to be bank-rolled...?

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Thanks for the vote, Hex. At the risk of looking like a mutual appreciation society, I'm voting for your crazy, original and funny entry. Other votes to the Judge and Parson.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

FOOOM!

(pretty or messy? Thanks, HareBrain!)

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

HareBrain, thanks for the vote. I'm so --- how do the English say it ---- chuffed?

Hex, I appreciated your kind words, and as you know I liked your story a lot as well.

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

HareBrain, thanks for the vote. I'm so --- how do the English say it ---- chuffed?

Tickled pink, old boy.

You can repay me by not making any more comments about not being a "proper" writer ;) (though to be fair, I haven't noticed any recently).

Re: Discussion 300 Word Challenge #2

Well, while we're waiting for the fire brigade to dampen Hex down, my thanks also to HareBrain, and to The Spurring Platty who crept in to vote. Thanks both!

I wouldn't hold your breath. I just noticed Southron Sword voted for me too. Wheeeeeee!

(thank you very much, Southron Sword)
