Those guesses are incorrect. When I said that the Cat guess had something in common, (in my hint above) I meant that this character was thinking about a child when the thought occurred.

Well the only male POV characters we have in ACOK are Maester Cressen, Bran, Jon, Tyrion, Davos and Theon.

You've already ruled out Bran and Tyrion. I don't think it was Jon because you said the "thinker" was referring to or thinking of a child, and he was a bit preoccupied with Ygritte in this volume. That leaves us with Maester Cressen, Davos and Theon.

I'm thinking Maester Cressen, only because you said this one was obscure. That's a wild guess though, I haven't the foggiest idea whom he might've been referring to if I'm right. I'd have to look it up.
