Short list got longer this month.
I really don't think any of the stories posted were flawed, so in the end it comes down to subjective taste.

My longer short list...
Forshaw
Starbeast
alchemist
Hex
boneman
The spurring Platty
Moonbat
Harebrain
mosaix
chrispenycate
Bob S. Sr
TheDustyZebra

After re-re-reading everything then re-re-reading this list again, I finally voted for mosaix and his lonely robot.
I think it really brought back the feelings I had as a kid reading those stories.
So for the robots devotion and for reminding me of stories that sparked my love of words, thank you mosaix.

Already people are voting and for the second month running I've had to rush to finish my comments, so here they are:

Chris – The first thing that springs to mind for Chris’ entry this month is thought provoking. A different perspective of creation and the creator. I’m not sure whether he comes across as slightly arrogant, or just honest. As he is omnipotent I’m going to have to go with the latter I suppose. Really enjoyed it, another incredible entry.

Grizzgreen711 – What I enjoyed most about this one was the way my perspective of the story changed each time I read a bit more, the blanks being filled in word by word. As my interpretation changed so too did my appreciation of the tale. For me at least it could be taken in a number of different ways, but ultimately it seems to be a story of ones devotion to duty, or family and sometimes that can be a worse conflict than anything else.

Stormfeather – What can be stronger than devotion of a mother for her child, something that is told perfectly here, but the need is even greater for the child is special. I thought the maternal sacrifice was strong enough in its own right, but the last line clinched it, giving the little twist that these tales sometimes bring.

Chaoticheart – Yet another spot on depiction of the theme. Here we have that inner strength that only can be given by some emotion greater than all others. Call it love, call it devotion, it does not matter, it is the force that will drive a hero on, to success or failure, forcing him to take another step no matter what the cost.

Slindeman – A whole key moment of history, it would seem, squeezed into so few words. A really clever first entry, as we see what looks to be a rather uncommon accident, but in fact looks to be the incredible chance meeting of two beings who might actually change the world. (Loved the Analog magazines reference!)

Bob – Well, whut more need tuh be said about this little mastahpiece. Ah lurved it from t’moment ah first set eyes on it, a simple tale of the dead hangin’ around aftah death ‘cos it be what they’d always done. Course I’m spectin’ that the old spellchecker, well I guess that thought it were being seriously mussed wit.

TDZ – What another great entry from the dusty one. And it really is, someone prepared to put up with anything, and use whatever materials are at hand (quite literally) to get a story told, no matter what the cost or discomfort. It reads like a slow escalation as step by step things get worse but the writer just keeps going...

Cul – Once again, despite protests to the contrary Cul gives us a cracking story. A hunter of some description prepared to do his terminal job, no matter what is thrown at him. The realisation that this time his foe has taken on the form of a child is very telling, but not as much as his willingness to kill it. It did make me wonder though how he would react if it was really a child... (a story for another time perhaps)

Ursa – as always clever and entertaining. There are some wonderful ideas here, well more truths I suppose; people clinging onto their past is some kind of pride, while it is easy to see that to alien eyes we must be a very strange species. The whole thing is given a deliciously sinister twist with the ending. No half measures eh? The end is nigh....

TJ – Ah once again we have the love of a mother for her offspring, once again a uniquely given form. Of course there is something a little scarier in this one. A mother that loves her child so much and has the power to do something about it so that she never has to let him go, because even if he leaves she has the means to bring him back...

Olive Sky – Not only is the last entry this month from a newcomer, not only does it set the new record for entries in a month, but it is a wonderful piece of poetry that crams so much into it, it is easy to interpret it one way and then another each time I read it, from a child being born to a spirit leaving the world, and all the bits in between it is a remarkable first attempt at the 75 word challenge, and a fitting ending to one of the best months of entries so far.

Damn it Springs! if you'd posted a few seconds later you would have saved me from a double posting!!! ;)

As so many others have said, it has been a magnificent month, with the quality of stories being astronomical across the board. Everyone should be really pleased with themselves, and all should take a well deserved bow.

Personally I did not expect much from mine, it was not my strongest entry, more a little piece of fun (it's missing the last line, which I'll post after voting), so its a real surprise and pleasure to even get one short listing let alone two, so grovelling thanks for the mentions to abernovo and johnnyjet.

The painful task of whittling down the shortlist of everything to an actual semi-short list has been done so:

Starbeast
Scott
Reiver
Hex
Nixie
PM
Tisphone
Hoops
Tactical Loco
Teresa
Phyrebrat
mosaix
Chris
Stormfeather
Bob
TDZ
Ursa
TJ
Olive Sky

I've got to decide from one of you.

Thanks for the mentions, springs, abernovo and perp.

And thanks for the vote, tactical. So glad you enjoyed it.

Well, at the moment, there's 13 votes - for 13 different stories. Just an indication of the high quality.

Edit: Make that 14 for 14 now. This could be one massive tie-breaker!

It was very close between Anya and TDZ, but in the end the micro-verse story came out on top as I have often wanted to write one myself and this was not only very funny but fitted the theme in a clever and different way.

Thanks to Anya and Moonbat for the mentions. Just to be mentioned is great, especially with the quality AND quantity of it this month.

Thank you, Moonbat for including my story in your list, like Abernovo, I am just pleased to get a mention; it is a lovely feeling.

And thank you also, Stormcrow.

Thanks to AnyaKimlin and Johnnyjet for the long-short listings.

I'm scared to start reading these stories for voting purposes.

Thanks for the vote johnnyjet!

I appreciate the feedback, Perpetual Man.

So many great stories. Well done, everyone.

My short list was:
Culhwch
Harebrain
Heoru
Moonbat
Teresa

I voted for Harebrain. Woodwitch has so much story packed into so little space, and I loved the prose.

Thanks for the mentions to JohnnyJet and Moonbat.

As everyone has said this is going to be really difficult to vote. Will have to do some serious thinking!

Short list:

Crystal Haven
Tactical Loco
Glen
The Spurring Platty
Kaladan
Phyrebrat

I read each one in turn and think That's The One, then I read the next one. :(

Whittling the stories down into a shortlist has been a challenge in itself, this month. There have been so many fantastic ones; it really has been a difficult decision to make.

So, after much deliberation, I managed to get my list down to 17 - from an initial 30!

After reading everything again (numerous times), I got my final 5 – which I've highlighted below.

Well done to everyone that took part, you really have made it one heck of a month.

Karn Maeshalanadae – The Last Guardian Angel
Starbeast – Escape From the Planet of Peril
Abernovo – Work-life Balance
Springs1971 – The nun's walk
Reiver33 – Quis ut Deus
Hex – Consummation
Aun Doorback – Brave new world
David Evil Overlord – Goddess After the Apocolypse
HoopyFrood – Book bound
Boneman – The Long Wait
TacticalLoco – Long Term Fidelity
Glen – I second that emotion
The Spurring Platty – Eyes That Don't Lie
Teresa Edgerton – THE DEAD CAN WEEP
HareBrain – Woodwitch
Bob S Sr. - THE RAILROAD MAN
Culhwch – Evening Devotions

In the end, I was torn between Springs and Bob, and what a difficult decision it was to make. But I had to choose one, and I finally decided on Bob. I have a headache now! :p

Thanks for the mentions/shortlisting springs, Warren, johnnyjet, TacticalLoco and Moonbat.

Anybody else notice that Parson's name (but not story) is missing from the poll?

Thank you very much for the mentions springs, Warren_Paul, Abernovo, TacticalLoco, Perpetual Man and Scott R Forshaw!

I haven't even read all the stories yet. I'm going to need a lot of cake.
