The Winds of Winter publishing date guesses?

Any updates? Apart from Martin publishing stuff unconnected to his Magnus Opus.

Only update that I'm aware of is that he is still working on it.

Not exactly much of an update when thats what he's been saying for the past 7 years!

April 25th 2018:

“No, winter is not coming… not in 2018, at least. You’re going to have to keep waiting for THE WINDS OF WINTER. You will, however, be able to return to Westeros this year,” said George R. R. Martin. “I do want to stress… indeed, I want to shout… that FIRE & BLOOD is not a novel. This is not a traditional narrative and was never intended to be… let’s call this one ‘imaginary history’ instead. The essential point being the ‘history’ part. I love reading popular histories myself, and that’s what I was aiming for here… As for me, I’m returning once again to THE WINDS OF WINTER.”

I couldn't care less about Fire and Blood, it's TWOW I'd have preferred to see.

I for one will not be spending any money on it. No more dosh going from my wallet to Mr Martin's bank account until TWOW. However I am sure Fire and Blood will be a huge success.

apparantly some translator said that given the amount of script pages GRRM submitted to his publisher Wnds of Winter could release sometime late next year.

People over on Reddit also appear to be excited about a possible 2019 release. GRRM has booked a large amount of public appearances for next year and some regular attendees of these events noted that at his last appearance he seemed far more relaxed and laid back than before.

I wont purchase the book until the entire series is complete. I may however put some money on a 2019 release date.

First, a confession: I've not read a single one of the books, nor have I watched the series. Why? I find I can only manage one massive swallow-your-life epic set of books at a time without confusing plots, sub-plots, conflicts and the hundreds of characters involved, and I'm currently invested in Janny Wurts' Wars of Light and Shadow. Consequentially, I've intentionally stayed away from just about anything that would spoil the books for me with the intention of picking up ASOIAF once I was done with WOLAS, but...

I heard on the TV news (of all places) yesterday that there's talk of Martin only finishing the series in screen form; not as books! (Say it ain't so!) Everything I read about it says that many chapters have already been written; do you seasoned Martin fans think he would really abandon his readers like that? Apologies if there's a better thread to post this in elsewhere; I did a cursory search, but nothing suggested itself...

GRRM recently said in an interview that the writing is going very well lately.. but still no date.

Seems this is not looking likely for 2019 then.

He also mentions in a blog they are developing two GOT related shows for Hulu.

There has been some talk of the TV and books diverging, in how they end. This seems likely, as certain plotlines have already panned out differently in the show. This makes me hopeful that we can consume either version in any order without total spoilers, if and when Martin finishes the books.

I imagine that Martin fully intended to finish the books originally, but circumstances behind the scenes must have prevented that somehow. He's been guarded in what he's revealed in interviews, so we can only speculate.

Perhaps fan theories hit too close to his planned ending, causing him to lose confidence and initiate a major rethink?

Pretty sure he cares more about other stuff these days. And that WoW has become something on his to do list he is certain he will one day get to but it's a chore he keeps postponing in the meantime.
Just my thoughts obviously.

I will update my estimate to October 2020. Though I hope it is earlier.

I had thought he would finish the series. But the impression of almost finished status of Winds of Winter has been going on for a couple of years now. Getting that one out will be an achievement, and then it will be very interesting for us to see if the story is still in knots at the end of that book. Hopefully the last is an easier and more enjoyable write for him.

That's at least possible -- I think/hope he must have planned the last book very tightly in the writing of WoW, because he can't afford any margin for error with so little wiggle-room left. The optimistic part of me wants to believe this is why WoW has taken so long, and therefore the last book should be quick to write. But the downside of planning a book to the nth degree can be that the writing becomes joyless, and motivation is lost.

He’s not given much away in the media of late other than to say he’s busy writing which is a good sign.
By all accounts he turned down an appearance in Game of Thrones final season to concentrate on Winds of Winter.
I’m secretly optimistic that he may finish it this year but I’ve been hoping that for quite some time now!
