My drastically culled short list (35 didn't really count) was
Luiglin - the dancers, a great business opportunity
TSP
HB, for a cracking last line
Aaron Stone
Pyan
Southorn Sword
Glen - just for best use of the term cognitive dissonance in 75 words
Vertigo
Bowler1 - I'm sure I've met that guy, y'know
TE
Scott forshaw

I'm afraid my years working in a newsagents which stocked titles the like of What Irish Anorak? and had customers for them all.... made Pyan's the one that made me laugh most.

So, Pyan got my vote.

Well, my Very Long Short List (TM) would have been the same.

Then Culhwch sent a shiver down my spine. That's one vote for you.

I'm the guy who has to hold back tears every time Mrs Incredible tells Syndrome's minions to stop shooting missiles at them, because there are children on board.

Since I became a father, I found I'm very protective of all those little guys and girls.

Thanks, bob and springs for the votes, and Paul and Grizzgreen for the shortlistings.

Can we stop the poll now, please?...;)

The quality of the entries has been amazing, and I’ve really enjoyed reading through them all.

But I have to choose, and this is my much reduced list. * Favourites. **My vote.

Springs1971 – A Troubled Course
Nixie – The Soup Kitchen
Vertigo – Parallel Universe
Teresa Edgerton – Mrs. Johnson
Alchemist – The House On The Edge Of The Forest
MemoryTale – Bob
*Pyan – Plain Brown Wrapper
*The Judge – Face Value
*TacticalLoco – The Show

**Culhwch – Make-Believe Wings

Before I even reached the last line of Make-Believe Wings I knew who would get my vote. It got me, from start to finish. The last line – brilliant!

My vote goes to Culhwch – Make-Believe Wings

Well, it's never easy judging the 75s and this time was no different. Springs started us off with a perfect example of what I consider Magical Realism to be - a recognisable world with magic lurking in background, blending into the fabric.

Hex scared me with dogs with human eyes; Teresa brilliantly mixed Greek myths and practical furniture; paranoid marvin twisted the reality with a possibly philandering werewolf husband; alchemist's tale of a preternatural wisewoman was sublime.

Chrispy brought us a wonderful tale of a sound engineer that made me truly wonder about his world;); pyan had me laughing with his restricted electronics magazine (and this a family site!); slindeman gave us a house of sorrows perhaps reminiscent of MR's origins; Luiglin, new to the Chrons and in his first post, showed us the benefits of a little mystery to a small business owner; and Ursa told a tale of comforting and devotion that warmed my heart.

Any of these could have got my votes. In the end, alchemist just pipped the others to the post.

Wow - thanks for the votes and especially for the kind words, DEO and crystal. I don't think there's much that beats writing a story that really strikes a chord with a reader.

Thanks for the mention, crystal, and for the votes Warren and Abernovo. I'm doing (metaphorical) somersaults. It's been so long since I had a vote and now two!

Thanks for the mentions. Tried to vote but phone keeps logging me out. Will try again now.

Thanks for the mention, Abernovo -- and congratulations on your sex change! (*)

(*) You're Abernova on vote list. Just in case I start any regrettable rumours.

I think I'm going to need to change how I read before voting. Reading so many excellent stories at once made it really hard to vote. My short list was:

HopeSprings - Made me laugh, although my graphic imagination did give me some rather disturbing mental images.

Alchemist - Loved the twist ending. Like many people I automatically thought the stranger was male.

Aaron Stone - I hate pidgeons myself, so this struck a chord with me.

DarkPoet - Another one that made me laugh. Isn't it always the way!

TheJudge - Reminded me of that dark time when I was job hunting.

My vote (eventually) went to Alchemist.

Springs
Crystal Haven
Paranoid Marvin.
DEO
Hopewrites
High Eight

Shortlist and the winner was Hopewrites for making me giggle when I needed it.

Well it was really difficult to choose. Lots of really great stories there and my original shortlist was 22 so hard to whittle down!

So my final list of mentions is :
springs1971
Scott.R.Forshaw
r j dando
pyan
slindeman
Phyrebrat
Ursa major

Runners Up:
Bob.S.Sr
Luiglin
Culhwch

But my vote goes to alchemist. Just a lovely image and nice reveal :)

Thanks for the mention, Warren, springs, and MT!! Fate has a funny way of working...and I too hate pigeons.

My shortlist is being slowly written up.

My vote went to Culhwch. Brilliant and tragic.

To me, the uncanny is always unsettling and even menacing.

This story gave me a real chill.

Congrates to everyone who got a story in this month.
And mucho thanks to crystal haven, Warren Paul and Grizzgreen711 for the mentions!

Now the hard stuff;

I tried to be really brutal with my short list this month. Though talent showed in every entry, I tried to choose the ones that I felt best met the challenge as well as telling a story. Please do note that my own entry totally fails on this last point. Ah well...

My favs were by:
alchemist
Bowler1
Perpetual Man
Bob S. Sr.
chrispenycate
pyan
mosaix
Luiglin (Welcome to chrons, great start!)

After a lot of thought my vote went to pyan because the stituation was so real.
