Here are my choices (with the stories in posting order within the categories):

Honourable Mentions:
  • Voices in your head by Hex
  • Domino Effect by Vertigo
  • The Suit by Moonbat
Runners Up:
  • The Constant Reader by Paranoid Marvin
  • The Play's the Thing by TheDustyZebra
  • Steel Body, Stone Heart by The Judge
Winners:
  • Aspirations by Abernovo
  • Scriptorium by alchemist
  • Mirror of Regret by ratsy

By the way, alchemist, can you confirm (in writing, obviously) that the scriptorium's technology - put one "message" in, get two out - also works with banknotes, as you promised....

* Ursa can't wait to test the little beauty.... *

;):)

Yes, I'll be getting a trusty Irish bank on to that right away...

Wait, having some difficulties finding a bank...

No money, no banks - Ireland explained in four words.

While I'm here, that's close this month, I will tune back in tomorrow to check out the winner.

Thanks so much for the vote Ursa. These are such fun challenges and the talent is so deep so any votes are fantastic.

Lots of good stories, though I have to confess that there were a number I didn't understand, even on a third reading  and several where I thought the idea was wonderful, but the handling of it wasn't quite enough to get the story onto the shortlist, which is...

alchemist -- Scriptorium
Boneman -- Time After Time
Glitch -- The stone prison
HareBrain -- The Triumph of the West
Hex -- Voices in your head
Luiglin -- I sit and watch
Moonbat -- The Suit

After a lot of agonising, votes to alchemist, Hex and Luiglin -- those stories all stayed with me from the first, which for me is one of the most important things a story should do.

Many thanks for the hon. mentions, short-listings and runners-up placings from all those who named me, you know who you are -- very gratifying to have so many. And extra big thanks to Aun, Glitch, Moonbat, Phyrebrat, stevietree and Vertigo for the votes which came as a shock when I looked just now! And really classy tale, Phyrebrat? I think I shall have to have that printed on a t-shirt!!

While I'm here, in case anyone is wondering, the statue is in Winchester Cathedral and it's even more beautiful in real life than in the photo -- and this crypt floods so at times the statue is standing in water which gives a totally different feel to it, somehow ethereal. My partner took the photo, and he's thrilled that so many people responded to it, producing a record number of entries this quarter, and he's asked me to thank everyone who has said pleasant things about the image.

Thankyou for all your kind words and of course votes. I felt my poem was a little on the short side for a 300 word assignment, but there you go.

An excellent month, my votes go to

Jonnyjet
Allmywires
Crystal Haven

but there are many more excellent entries.

Well, just before I retire to generate some nourishment, we have managed as many voters as writers – but that's with a considerable amount of help from outside the ranks (according to my little list here:- anivid, AlcubierreWarp, Bowler 1, Stevietee, Tim Shelley, Tisiphone and vector7 have all voted while never having submitted for the three hundred word extravaganzas, while Brev and Talysia voted without submitting this time; a splendid show of support, which warrants applause) there are still:- Aaron Stone, AMB, AnyaKimlin, Arkrose, Culhwch, gary compton, hopewrites, StilLearning and The Spurring Platty yet to do their Chronic duty; still time, no pressure or anything, just another tiebreaker on the cards.

Records for everything, obviously; would everyone please give himself a nice round of applause?

I've 11th houred it, votes going to Ursa Major, Johnnyjet, and Allmywires. Those stuck in my head, the imagery (Scary lack of in Ursas case!) of them, more than all the others.
I'd post a shortlist but there truly weren't any I didn't enjoy. I would like to honourable mention: Crystal haven, Mouse, Lilmizflashythang, David Evil Overlord, Perpetualman, and Theresa Edgerton.

Thanks to James Coote and Phoenixthewriter for the votes and to Phyrebat for the mention!
