That's one reason. Another is to encourage members to think about the picture and the story more than perhaps they do with the 75-worder, so instead of posting within two minutes of the Challenge going up** they spend some honing their writing, which is after all the point of being an Aspiring Writer. With a proper prize in the offing, it's more prestigious than the 75-worder, and therefore deserves rather more thought. (Whether it gets it is another matter, of course!)

** and then spending the rest of the month moaning about the changes they should have made... :p

As if we would. :p I quite like the rule, and usually potter about with it for a day or two and then review just before I post. What I try not to do is write a second one, or even think of a second idea, otherwise I'd just tear myself apart choosing.

Still waiting for divine inspiration for this one. Words seem to be easier than pictures when it comes to ideas for me...

*goes back to staring at the picture...*

rj -- try thinking of words, perhaps. Undercroft. Statue. Waiting. Holding. Stonework. Arches. That help?

James -- yep. Just inspired.

Me too! I did a rough and was sure it was 300 on the dot and typed it out to find it was 660-odd. I still have four pesky little words to eradicate.... but they will go. Oh, they will.

Definitely have a kernel of an idea.
Setting and even a bit of characterization is a given from that brilliant photograph.

Plot? Ay, that's the rub!

Think I'll try my hand at the 300 worder this month. There are so many ways to go with that photo.

Okay, I am down to 400 words. The last 100 will be a pain.

Trimmed and sliced (and bludgeoned and prodded) down to 296, but I also have a number (like 296, for example). That counts as the amount of words it would take to spell it out, right?

As far as I know, and years too. I hope so, anyway, I have a year in mine. There's something in the rules about numbers if you have a look, Aaron, or if in doubt pm one of the mods for the challenges; TJ, ursa, cul, Chrispy, TE, or Nixie, I think.

After cutting down the trim a bit more it rings in at 299.

Then got room for a whole other word, I say add a swear, you can't go wrong with **********!! ;)

I've got my story done. Comes in at exactly 300 words. :D

Although I'm worried it might be a bit dark...

What are the rules on ethical and moral topics?

Numbers in numerals (ie 10,000) are counted as one word, as are things like 0.67% and £3.00. Zero point six seven and three pounds would count as the words (ie probably four and two respectively).

Warren, dark we can cope with. Ethical/moral might be a different question -- we'd prefer not to have orgy scenes, nor a hooker actually plying her trade on screen, as it were, and explicit gruesome violence is a no-no. Remember family-friendly. One of my stories had a four-letter word, though (OK, I ****'d it out, but it was obvious what it was), and hinting at things is fine. If in doubt, send the story to one of us** and we'll examine it in the staff room. (There's no truth in the rumour that we make the stories recite Shakespeare in Latin while standing on one leg on a stool in order to pass the tests.)

** as per springs' list, but she forgot pyan.
