Thank you WP for the mention.

My short list which was hard to get down as I liked all of them, but these edged across the line fror me.
DOE - Well I had to, we're joined at the hip!
Judge
Culhwch
Highlander
Hopewrites
WP

Vote winners
The Spurring Patty - I liked the idea of the plaything, it really had punch for me.
Cuddly Bear - Very funny and very clever.
Aun Doorback - Soul Mate would have had my single vote easily, a rubber burning shopping trolley was ace.

I have to burn some rubber myself, laters.

Thanks for the mention Warren, I did not expect many this month due to the nature of my entry, so it made my day.

Thank you for the vote, springs.

Right, hold all calls, I'm going in to read the entries. If I'm not back by Saturday send a search party.

Great stories. My favourites (and mine) were:

Arkose – The Trojan Horse – good fast pace, a sense of a bigger picture beyond the 75 words, significant events, a post-post-apocalypse. Proper sci-fi. Second vote here.

David Evil Overload - The First Lawyer Of Robotics – more sci-fi, clever title, to think, the human race ended by a, well a, er, a robot for, er, companionship. Serves them right.

Perpetual man - The True Promise of A Post Apocalyptic World – Poetry, innovation, but I think just scraping in under the allowed word count.

reiver33 - Hitchhiking To Hell – Another hell of a way for the human race to end. Be careful what you wish for.

StilLearning – Hope – great description, hints at a bigger picture, life-affirming hope.

Mouse - Everybody’s Dead, Dave – Poetic, innovative, a great conversational style that gives the payout more oomph. Third vote.

James Coote – Ocean's Promise – A refreshing kind of apocalypse, wet not dry.

mosaix - There’s None So Blind… - … as those who will not see. Economically portrayed attitude, wisdom, pragmatism. A reminder of Desiderata which I have not read for years. You can just hear the world(galaxy)-weariness of the alien, it seems like he’s seen it all before. “..flapped his gills…” three words which carry exposition and a heavy comic load. A Tour de Force. My first vote goes here.

Azzagorn - Road to Nowhere – Hah! I remember waiting at the bus station after hiking the Ridgeway, trying to get home…or at least out of there…

paranoid marvin - The King's Shilling – I think the third stanza is my favourite.

Glen - Empty Date – I don’t generally do post-apoc. (I figure we’re already going to hell in the proverbial handcart) so the genre reminded me of the last time I had to include it in a story. I don’t like to waste characters, good or otherwise, so brought out Capt. Fan. again. I’m starting to get quite fond of his character, and his love for the hard-to-get Princess. Maybe I’ll get another chance to use him in the (post-apoc) future…

What a month! Not only record numbers, but amazing quality. Well done to everyone who entered.

My long list (not including the finalists listed below) was huge: Lilmiz, reiver, hope, High Eight, StormFeather, stormcrow, Phoenix, Anthus, juelz, Leisha, The Procrastinator, Aun and The Spurring Platty. Just to get it down to that number meant rejecting entries that I liked a lot.

I managed to boil my final round shortlist down to 7 - Mouse, Scott R Forshaw, Teresa, kiffinyjean, Vertigo, paranoid marvin and HareBrain. I wanted to vote for all of them. They were brilliant. Ultimately though, after much consideration, my votes went to:

Mouse, for a perfect piece of whimsical and slightly scary humour;

Scott R Forshaw, for making me laugh out loud - the Apocalyptic Family; and

HareBrain, for being terrifying in both imagery and dialogue.
