Springs - The first thing that struck me with this entry was just how much was squeezed into it. When I thought about it afterwards it seemed as though there was a lot more going on than should have been possible in just 75 words. Is that not the challenge to paint as vivid a picture with so few colours? Needless to say loved it, a race wiped out by two kids, because they are blackmailed into doing so. Multi-layered, clever and thought-provoking.
James - More than anything else I found this story unsettling. There is the hint of some terrible deed carried out, by not defining it the story is given a wonderful depth. The ending itself is just as good, open to different interpretations, depending on my reading.
Karn - I'm not sure just what happened here, but it feels as though the story should be a retelling, but instead it is an original take using religious imagery as a different fantasy archetype, rather than the same old elves. There are some wonderful twists like the creator being the jealous one almost as though it creates an inverted version, where Heaven becomes Hell...
Gary - A clever tale of cyclical reincarnation, where it seems that everything that goes around comes around. The moment where the age old mind cannot communicate because it is in a baby's body is a diamond, while the conclusion where it seems as though life is going to repeat again and again is nothing short of horrifying.
Arkose - I really liked the story, and you can almost feel a reality in there; humans creating machines to improve justice, but the cold logic of those machines becomes a force so exacting that it seems as if the entire human race is incarcerated. It made me wonder if anyone is free and if so what kind of fear they are living in. In the eyes of the machine all are guilty.
Crystal Haven - A wonderful interpretation of the Unicorn myth. It works well being told from the point of view of the virgin. There is a deep vein of sadness that runs through the words, the feeling that there was more to the relationship before hand, almost as though they were friends. The betrayal of her father, seems to have placed a feeling upon her as though she betrayed her friend and that is a tragedy.
Hex - She's a witch! How can you tell? Monty Python aside I enjoyed the story. A lot. The3re is something tragic in seeing the trial from the witches point of view. it brings home the senseless stupidity of a trail that cannot be won. I wonder if there can be any peace in knowing that innocence in this case can only be proven by death.
Lilmizflashythang - A simple story that is magical in that simplicity. It is made all the richer by the baby talk, giving it an authenticity and realism that overlays the magical elements. What a great way to live being able to repair broken toys rather than throwing them in the bin.
StilLearning - One of those great stories that starts well, making sense to the reader but not the right sense, then becomes clearer as the story builds. It has a humour to it, that is subtle and clever, what a wonderful twist where people are better off guilty and would rather be found so. The fact the judge (sorry TJ) got it as well seemed to say so much in so few words.
TE - Took me two reads to really appreciate this one, but it was beautiful. It readily shows the small mindedness of men and the fear of the unknown, and the costs of giving into that fear. Sometimes people just don't know the cost their actions will have, even if those actions in trying to save themselves lead only to their doom.
