Changed Perspectives

“We seek Fukata, the legendary swordmaster. It is said he came hither, maimed in battle, turned hermit.”

The old man leaned towards the speaker, hands—left over right—atop his cane.

“What would you have of him?”

“We would be his disciples.”

“For what would you fight with his knowledge?”

“Justice!”

“Whose?”

“The King’s!”

“I know him not. The next village, mayhap.”

He watched them leave, eyes sad, right hand slipping from the cane, useless.

Undying Love

Awoken by my wife's laughter. Embracing lying on the damp grass thankful for every moment. "Not even the Gods could keep us apart!" I whispertaking in her sweet aroma of honeydew.

Laughter erupt erupt from the heavens... Screams burst from my wifes scorched lips, leaving nothing but ash and the scent of honeydew. "TO FIGHT AGAINST US IN THE FORBIDDEN WAR, YOUR PUNISHMENT IS"
"No wait!" I plead.

***

Awoken by my wifes laughter...

A Judge on trial

“Stand, God of Justice. You stand accused of striking the Memory Teller with celestial fire. How do you plead?”

“Innocent!”

“Innocent? Did you not state you believed you were causing a curse?”

“It was merely a joke, great one.”

“A joke? Did the Teller not vanish for some time afterward?”

“He was probably busy. Work, his child, his…”

“Speculation! For the crime of striking another, your punishment shall be to be part of meta fiction!”

Avenger

He stepped into the light of a streetlamp, spotting the suspect leaning on a fancy automobile.

He looked out of place in his plush white fur coat, glossy silver pants, tan ugg mukluks, fur cap with tail, shaggy brown beard and ammunition belt across his shoulder.

He called to the young male.

"You the one who said he didn't believe in fairies?"

"Yeah, except maybe you."

He drew his guns and blew the punk away.

A cold wind to Valhalla

It was winter when the murderous crew of the Long Serpent reached the World’s edge.

It rode jagged rocks, carving deep notches along the snow clad hull until it halted, rocking back and forth, like scales upon the precipice of oblivion.

‘Back!’ The Captain bellowed at the oarsman, yet the boat began to tip forwards.

He pushed Snorri towards the bow.

‘What’s pulling us down, monsters?’

The lad shook his head.

‘Just ice!’ He cried.

Devotion

The raven had been circling the castle keep for three nights. The wait was almost over.

The guards were oblivious as she swooped in a trajectory that evaded their lines of sight. Alighting in the arch of an upper-floor window, the raven locked her gaze upon the prince within.

Recognition dawned.

"You...it's you..." The words never fully escaped his lips.

The raven departed as she had entered. Now, at last, she could grieve.

Gruff Justice

Gruff the tragic dragon lived in a tree,
'Cos pirates burned his castle and most of his family.
In the cold, wet forest, he caterwauled all day,
Until he dried his tears and left Dracoshenora Bay.

Gruff the angry dragon searched o'er the sea.
He cremated the killers and burned half their home city.
His wings were rent and broken, the shoreline all aflame.
He died, and now the dragonfolk revere and sing his name.

Prometheus’ Council

“Appeal!”
“It’s a fair ruling.”
“Having my liver eaten for eternity!”
“If you can’t do the time… Besides it’s a great symbol! Mankind only remember gods with a good symbol – sword, cross…”
“You’re sure I’ll be remembered?”
“Yes. Look, this movie is named after you.”
“Cool spaceship!”
“Also named after you. And here’s the star.”
“Phwoarr!”
“See, you don’t want to be remembered for that kind of barbaric sentiment.”
“Ok, I’ll go quietly”.

"...and so King Priam ordered the Horse burned, and the Greeks were all killed. Justice, if you like, for trying to trick their way into the Old City."

I paused as the class scribbled away and looked out of the Hampstead Heath window. Over to the Shard and Big Ben on the horizon, miles away across the great city of Paris.

They sat in judgment, the three, of a galaxy ablaze with war and destruction that was man’s legacy.

“The fruits,” said the first, “Of his labors.”

“One verdict to reach,” added the second, “One outcome among infinite dreadful possibilities.”

“But the cost!” The third cried out.

“An end is the cost for inaction; man will not fall alone.”

The third asked,“A sentence then; how long?”

“Eternity.” Replied the first.

The three men nodded assent

People were cruel, so he told them to be kind.
People were selfish, so he told them to be giving.
People were violent, so he told them to be gentle.
None of it worked.
He promised paradise after death if they followed the rules.
That was only just after all.
At first it worked.

Then he watched as armies marched and nations fell, prayers inscribed on a hundred banners.

That got out of hand.

The Golden Rule

The courtroom stilled as the Judge slid into his chair. “Be seated,” he stated. He glared at the defendant. The gallery sat quietly, anticipating his decree.

“Do unto him, as he did unto his victims.” The Judge slammed the gavel down, and exited the room.

Title: To Ring a Bell...

He crawled from the depths, once again blinded by the blazing sun.
"O great god, why do you beckon me from my thoughts?" he coughed, bitterness in his voice.
"To see one who has been judged, and one who will beg forgiveness" said Zeus.
"Let those who deal justice unfairly receive it back in kind. The pleasure you seek from me you shall not receive."
With finality, the crippled man slithered downward.

The Greatest Battle

It took three long months to embroider your surcoat -- do you have any idea how hard it is to remove Ogre's blood?

The Duke and Grand Council received your couriers by the day -- but not even a token from you on our Anniversary.

Do you have any inkling of the logistics of planning a High Feast? And there you lay snoring on the King's Wine.

Conquering hero indeed... you can wash your own damn gambison.

Consumed by greed

A sturdy two-master, the Jupiter, laboured sluggishly amid the tarry mid-Atlantic swell. “No moon tonight” thought Crowe – the lookout.

Below decks, all holds filled now with cotton and tea, the stench of captive humanity still lingered. Atop, Crowe breathed aloud “Twelve days to Bristol…”

As large as cartwheels, two great luminescent eyes rose from the depths; monstrous tentacles encircled the Jupiter, dragging her below the black ocean. Too late, Crowe managed a strangled cry “Kraken!”.

The Mortal Balance

For their capricious nature, scant coin for women, the bestial rape of our brides; my wife’s murder - their callous ‘compensation’ a simple wish. My choice a deity slaying blade.

I have weighed their immortal souls and found them wanting.

I will assail the unassailable.

I shall fight and scream blood while my tears will shatter mountains.

Let the ‘gods’ cower in their gilded halls.

I shall show no mercy.

Today all gods die.

A Dish Best Served Cold

The stench of death and decay hung heavily on the still morning air. The Sheriff's men had attacked at nightfall, and the battle which ensued had raged until dawn.

Robin waded through the aftermath alongside his trusted friar, their feet soaked with blood and carrion.

Robin winced with pain; not for the first time, and grabbed his tormented gut.

“How many?”

Tuck shrugged. “The cook's dead.”

Robin's stomach groaned.

“Ah, then justice has been served.”

Urban

A friend’s friend did the perfect crime, knew he’d do no time, but the victim’s sis was mistress of rhyme and put out a track, got her own back with magic black, he heard it, the word it got to his brain, made a tumour, the rumour was he saw the boy he'd killed every day, every way accusing this loser until he tried to waste him; the police faced him. One shot aced him.

By My Own Hands

To Mary, it seemed ill-timed and selfish in some incomprehensible way. And reluctantly, a part of her demanded another course of action, one in line with society. But another part, an altogether darker – or poisoned part – thought otherwise.

It was only fair, she thought to herself. No, it was justice, or revenge. Either way, Mary had already convinced herself.

She pulled out the pistol and fired at the judge that had freed her son’s murderer.
