“Well, I am a renowned author…”

“Yes, of Mars Base – The Myth.”

“Well, yes, but I knew it existed.”

“How cynical. Ironically though, you were right. There isn’t one.”

“What!”

“Completely fictitious but politically vital.”

“I’ll…”

“Tell? You already have. Anyway, application rejected.”

“But my…”

“$10 million application fee? Non-refundable – goes towards building the Mars base – now it’s really needed.”

No Justice

The drover and the poet came to the waterhole on the Diamantina at dusk.

‘They caught up with French here, three troopers and the boss. Said he’d started the whole mess, riled up the shearers and set the woolshed on fire. They brought back his body, singing the story he’d shot himself rather than be caught. His ghost’ll tell a different story, if you care to listen.’

A cold wind stirred amongst the coolibah trees.
