World Fantasy convention 2013

I haven't been to one before, either KR. All nerve wrecking! We'll hold each other together. :) welcome to the Chrons!

Thanks Springs! I've told myself that everyone there is human (well, mostly) and so it shouldn't be nerve-wracking, as we're all just looking to meet others and have interesting discussions about the same topics. :)

Hm ... if I printed up some chronicles t-shirts and gave them away, would anyone wear them for WFC?

I'm thinking of getting a long-sleeved made for myself. :)

Not a t-shirt, but a badge would be ok.

Or a secret handshake. In honour of Pyan, I think this should include wiggling the fingers in a Cthulhu-esque, tentaculoid manner.

I just booked my flights. Hand baggage only so I am totally up for a Chrons t-shirt (since I'll need a change of clothes). As long as it has a tentacle.

Oh, Boneman.

Hey! Did you see they've released the Kaffeeklatsches programme? Holly Black and Sarah Rees Brennan are talking!

(Other amazing people, too. Like Robin Hobb, Trudi Canavan and Joe Abercrombie)

I'd love to see a full programme at this stage.

Can I ask those clever people who know what's what -- are there other talks and events or are the Kaffeeklatsches all there is over and above the dealer's rooms etc? IE is there likely to be other events I'd enjoy.

I'm tempted by the William Nolan event, but, to be honest, I'd hate to book it and then find out maybe there was a talk by someone else that I'd like better. (Because unlike Hex who adores Holly Black there's none that would be my raisond'etre for being there. Now, if Bujold had turned up...)

I did see that (after Springs pointed it out!) and unfortunately (for me, anyway) Pat Rothfuss isn't doing any...

Oh dear. Now I feel slightly guilty about going (but absolutely not guilty enough to miss the chance to meet Sarah Rees Brennan and Holly Black). I'm really, really glad they're doing one.

An edited copy of an email I sent earlier (to a friend, not Worldcon) before reading the blog:

haven't I paid a hundred quid for this? Now give me a biscuit. :) i have decided not to go to them

I don't generally appreciate being someone's cash cow.

I suspect it's not so much evil-attempt-to-make-money and more oops-the-hotel-charges-£5-per-person-for-refreshments.

The lack of access concerns me more, and I think it may be illegal (you're meant to have equal access to goods and services). I wonder if they'll be changing that.

Well, if they extend the policy to other events, I hope people like KMQ gain from the back of it - I will be seeking out the freebies, being not at all rich and close to the limit of my investment in said event...
Plus I'd rather spend the dough and come away with a book.

I agree about the reason, Hex. But the management consultant in me is yelling: PLANNING! At point of pricing, not five weeks before. There's a saying over here about piss ups and breweries, and I suspect they'd struggle to run a party in Bushmills... :D

Heh - I wish! Authors don't make money off of these things (Tbh I had no idea what a kafflethingy was until today) except a hope that they'll get some more sales*. I suspect it was the hotel decided they'd charge for refreshments (frex, if you want a party catered by the hotel, there is a charge, which is, let us say, the same as 20 - people at kafflethingys - x 5) Now, yeah the con should have factored that into the budget, but may not have known up front. Bad planning, perhaps, rather than nefariousness. And let's not forget this is (afaia) volunteer run.

As for other things -- yes, there'll be loads of free stuff too (Panels/signings/readings etc. My cake :)). We'll keep you busy and no mistake!

*If you are invited to a con, they usually pay con ticket/hotel, so you aren't out of pocket. Apparently -- I was invited to one, but I'd already paid for said ticket and hotel...

Yes, I'm being too hard. :) but it is a basic question to ask - I've organised a few conferences in my time and refereshment charges are a quick rule-out.

What time is your cake, Francis? Signings would keep me going all weekend. I love signings. :)

4-5 on the Friday (though the schedule is still being juggled I think). There may well be other free refreshments. :D Also, I'm sharing with Danie Ware. A two-fer!

PS like I say, I think it's more of a planning snafu -- so much to think on when trying to run something like this! -- but not really a hanging offence, as seen exploding all over twitter.

Fab.

Ah, haven't seen Twitter. Oh, dear. I hope some voices are denigrating the hotel for charging a fiver for tea and biscuits. I might, in the interest of fairness.

From their own website

We have a hotel and a location that is second to none. We have a dedicated and professional team whose experience of running conventions encompasses a wide variety of events and many decades of experience.

Looks more like the cash cow model rather than luckless amateurs. I can say they will definitely NOT be getting extra money from me, even if Stephen King was doing a kaffeekwotsit on exactly the sort of thing I'm writing now.

(hoping this doesn't mean I'll get kicked from KMQ's shindig as an agitator)
