World Fantasy convention 2013

For fans - a chance to sit and chat with authors you've read (and other's you haven't) over a pint.

For writers - a chance to get your face known by agents, publishers, and editors, ask general questions over a pint, and talk to other authors about their experiences.

Thanks, Brian. Schmoozing, then. Meeting an author I've read feels like meeting the Dalai Lama. (My God, you're real!)

Holly Black's going (! -- note to self, mustn't gush insanely), and Joe Abercrombie and Joe Haldeman (All My Sins Remembered was one of my favourite books when I was a teenager).

And lots of agents/publishers etc for schmoozing. Angry Robot and Strange Chemistry will be there, and John Jarrold and many many more...

And naturally there'll be lots of wine, Jo. I'll be a cactus, then.

I really really want to go, but booking this early is pretty impossible for me :( I never know what I'm doing one day to the next and if I do have something planned in the far distant week, it tends to creep up on me and I can't go, due to being "insert something here depending on event" I may be able to manage though...I'll take a closer looksee at the dates

For the average pleb non-agent, non-published-writer, non-publisher (ie. me), what kind of things happen here? From the site, it looks like more of an event for industry insiders than one that Joe SF-fan would enjoy. Not that I wouldn't absolutely love to hang out with all the folks from the Chrons, but I would like to be able to at least pretend that I was going to learn something, or better myself in some way.

Bear in mind that I've only been to one Con, and that was in Dublin in 1998.

(Note: of course, Hex and Springs will be published authors by next October)

Drinking in the Bar! Panels on different topics. More Drinking in the Bar! Talks by GOH both normally thrown open to questions at the end. Lots of talking while drinking in the Bar! Dealers room. Wondering when the Bar opens so you can do more drinking and talking! Readings by authors. Blinking at the daylight as you stumble out of the hotel in search of somewhere to eat, drink and do more talking!Book launches. Drinking at said book launches! Meeting authors, publishers and agents. Having a drink to get courage enough to hunt down authors to sign your books when they are in the Bar!

Did I say a lot happens in the bar?

Well, I'm in, but I don't even drink! I'm a career designated driver, though, so that may come in handy.

Yay! Another person to say gosh you look nothing like your avatar to :D

Yep. You can come wearing fancy dress if you like; it will be Halloween.

And just to point out - I'm slightly more colourful than my avatar!

It's a hotel; probably not the strangest of things they have seen!

And I'll have Dougal and Florence with me.

You could hide the sword under Dougal's coat? Sorted. So long as you don't go Ryanair, think of the charges...

*goes and lies down for an hour*

@Anya, I always knew you must. :)

I'm still considering and trying to work out the money. It's not so much the ticket, but the travelling and hotel and food - and the time, a little. Realistically, I think the chances are low that I'm going to make it, but I'm going to blooming well try! Not giving up quite yet.

If I do make it, I'm easy to spot. Scruffy thirty seconds after putting good clothes on.
