World Fantasy convention 2013

Ask a family member to look after the kids while you go shopping ;) You don't have to tell them where you're going shopping :p

Umm ...wonderful plan except if I go any further North I'll be in the North Sea. It's going to be one long shopping trip ;)

Right, I'm just looking at this again and... am I being stupid or is it really that expensive? And why aren't there any single day tickets? They force you to go to all the days? I can't go to all the days. I have work and responsibilities and other boring stuff that stops me from having fun. Also, would there be cheaper hotels? Because, blimey Charlie, the prices scare me.

I have no intention of going for all four days, but will decide on what days closer to the time. I'm also assuming I'll stay elsewhere. I may or may not have alchemissus with me, which might make the hotel prices look better.

You can do it, Mouse!

Can you choose what days? I can only see the megabucks four-day option. There's not a chance I can do that.

No, I think the price is the same whatever you do (or you can pay £50 to not go at all! What's that about?). But they can't force you to go every day. Which I suppose makes it a megabucks one, two or three day option.

I totally didn't understand the £50 for not going option!

I don't think I can go then. I can't go for four days and I can't afford £125 to only go for one day. :(

Damn, it was only £100 for me. Some threshold must have been passed.

You've got a year left yet. Maybe your next short story will finance it!

In terms of accomodation, the hotel is top rate, there are much cheaper options which look okay but would need booked in advance unless one wishes to leave it to the last minute and take their chances....

I would go but would everyone be disappointed when they find out I have one leg, a parrot, a dodgy eye, bad breath and a hump on my back.

My friends call me Quasimodo Compo:eek:

On the plus side, I have a nice personality.

I'm definitely going; booked as soon as the event was announced. Mouse, the membership rates will rise steadily (and quite sharply) from the initial announcement right up to the event itself (assuming it doesn't hit capacity well before then); that's the way Steve Jones always does things. This is why I booked membership more than a year ago.

Should be a great event, and it will be kicking off with the David Gemmell Awards on the Thursday night, at which I should be launching a very special anthology... :)

I'm actually not impressed that they don't do day tickets. Really angry actually. They've excluded everybody like me who would've loved to have gone but just can't afford it. Where's the angry-face smiley? :(

I suspect that's because they know the hotel has a limited capacity (dictated by health and safety) and are confident of filling that with full weekend memberships. Every day membership they take means one less full weekend place available.

Except this is the WORLD fantasy convention. Its maximum capacity should be MAXIMUM, so it can easily encompass day trippers as well as weekenders. If they are confident of ticket sales,(and they must have a projection based on solid evidence) then surely pick a venue that can handle it all. The price went up on October 1st. Imagine how much the last tickets will cost at this rate... When I went to WorldCon in Reno last year, you could just turn up and buy a dayticket....

The air-conditioning had better be working, that's all I can say...

ps: while I'm ranting (!) is anyone else a little disappointed at the luminary list? Does it grow? Two Richard Mathieson's, Brian Alldiss, China Mieville, and two artists. I dunno... I expected more 'bestsellers' for want of a better word. It is the WORLD fantasycon, after all. Fantasycon (no aspirations to grandeur there) had Brent Weeks, James Herbert, Mark Gatkiss, Joe Abercrombie, Joe Lansdale - never read any of his books, but he was vastly entertaining. It just seems a little... well, unambitious for a WORLD convention.

Doesn't matter if it's WORLD fantasy, GALAXY fantasy or any other sort... Venues still have a maximum attendance capacity which organisers have to adhere to. As for picking a venue that can handle it, you'd be amazed how few places can and will take on something of this sort and size.

But, the above is all conjecture on my part; I'm not involved in organising the event in any sense, so their reasons for not offering day memberships might be something else entirely.

It's my understanding the World Fantasy Convention is more geared towards professionals than fans and readers, which is one reason why it stays relatively small.

I have my membership, btw.

Oh, I don't know... if you take a quick glance down the current membership list you'll see that in addition to China, Brian Adiss etc, the likes of Robert Silverberg, Joe Haldeman, Garth Nix, Joe Abercrombie, Pat Cadigan, Ramsey Campbell, Ted Chiang, Philip Reeve, Steve Rasnic Tem etc are already registered; and yes, I'm sure there are still several more 'big names' to be announced.

Flagrant, J-WO?

I'd let this pass, but Boneman's mention of the possible lack of air conditioning encourages me to suspect that this is you taunting Requires Hate.

There's no way Seph and I can afford it... :( We really wanted to go, too... But it's also on during his uni semester...

However, for any of you needing to save hugely for these kinds of thing, and/or who are at uni, there's something better to look forward to (Seph and I are hoping to save up for it, and maybe I'll even have my novel finished by then!): Worldcon in London, 2014.

See the last entry here: http://www.smofinfo.com/LL/TheLongList.html

All the big agents and publishers will be there. John Jarrold's already talked about going.
