I was taught that, in situations where either gender is unknown or there is a mixture the masculine form takes precedence, eliminating that unpleasant singular "their", and I'm too set in my ways to adapt now.

Thank you for the vote, your Honour, and (since I haven't got round to doing so until now), thanks also to Hex and Lucky (Hmm, that story seems to have had more appeal to the fairer sex). Whee! Three votes, equalling my best.
