Thanks Hex, Crystal Haven and Ursa for the mentions! And on my birthday too!

If anyone is interested we have a Halloween challenge story thread in the workshop too!! Not much notice but we have a few stories posted already so come on and submit one.

My vote goes to: OneRed Button – Grinnel. There's nothing like a really BIG vision.
Honourable mentions:

By Appointment –Glen

The Unseen Plight – hopewrites

Loyalty –FeedMeTV

To the Stars ina Cereal Box – Robjwhite

What BotticelliGot Wrong -- Ursa major

And thank you to those who've given me mentions, it's really picked my week up!

Many thanks to Stormcrow and Aun for the votes. Over the moon!
Also to Starbeast for the mention and Perp for the mention and great review

My short list (and some fab stories this time round)
Springs
Ratsy
Nixie
Feedmetv
Boneman
Thedustyzebra

And my vote goes to, oh this is so hard, Nixie.

I had a very long shortlist...and I ended up doing the "close eyes and poke" method to choose between about 5 stories I spent about umm well the whole weekend not being able to decide between them...which means that Spurring Platty got my vote (I loved the gullible yet evil slant on childhood)

Thanks for the mentions / short listings Bowler1, Scott, Luiglin and Hex.

And many thanks for the unexpected vote, Cul. :)

Where can one buy new fingernails?

I've been too bunged up with cold to create a coherent shortlist, except a final shortlist of two. Both were chilling in different ways, Johnnyjet with a nicely downplayed last line that got across the horror of the children's pragmatic loss of innocence, and Aun's, with ... well, the whole thing really. It was a tough decision, but I'm going with Aun's because the madness of it was so well done, and it actually scared me.

Oh my! This is all a bit tight! Hare-coursing; illegal here isn't it? ;)

Enormous Thank You to Mosaix for your vote - had to re-read to check that I'd not mis-read the poll!:D

(sorry, locks unfurled - going to have to pull a spin!!)

Also, thanks for the mentions/listings to EricWard, crystal haven & The Judge.:)

I very nearly missed out on voting because I forgot about the time difference, just made it in the nick of time. Didn't even put together a proper shortlist to post. Doesn't really matter, FeedMeTV's story was the only one that really stuck out to me throughout the reading and re-readings of the entries. Might be partially due to the fact that I never really got the chance to say good-bye to the dog I had growing up, but it really hit me.

Also, big thanks to those who mentioned my story (shortlist, longlist, or whatever the case was). To be picked out from such excellence is a real pat on the back.

Last but not least, congratulations to HareBrain for the win.

Congratulations, HareBrain! Very nicely done! Does memory serve me right (since my spreadsheet doesn't, having not been updated in a very long time), is that #3?

Congratulations HareBrain :D

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with for us next month :)

No problemo!

It's at least three. I think HB should be banned from competition. EDIT: Updating the honour roll, I note it's actually HB's fourth win, not to mention a slew of second place finishes. A ban is definitely in order.

Congrats, though, HB - I look forward to your challenge!

And thansk to those who mentioned my last minute entry!

Congratulations, HareBrain! :)

(Now, I promised a funny story about my 75 worder this month. I think I'll do it as a blog post...)

We now return you to your regularly scheduled congratulationings.

Congrats HareBrain !!

Thanks for shortlist/mentions TacticalLoco, Starbeast & StilLearning :0)

Thanks all. That got a lot more exciting towards the end than looked likely at first. Well done to Stormcrow and Nixie for a good last-minute scrap, and commiserations. Watching a lead slide from 5-1 to 5-4, with an unknown number of votes left, is not the least stressful experience I've ever undergone!

You'll be pleased to know that I've already thought of November's challenge, and it will probably achieve Cul's wish of getting me banned.

Congratulations HB. An exciting end to the challenge!

Only probably get you banned?
